  • Check out my new and improved video on the airborne invasion of Crete: • Operation Mercury - Ai...
    The game is IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad
    "The battles for the island of Crete were fought from the second week of May 1941 when the island’s British, Commonwealth, and Greek garrison was attacked by German airbourne troops. The defender’s numerical superiority was eventually overwhelmed by the attacker’s massive advantage in logistic and air support. By the end May, organised resistance had broken down. Germans hunted small groups of Allied soldiers abandoned by inadequate evacuation facilities and desperately trying to evade capture."

      don smith yeah lets imagine a Hollywood one, the main actor is some american guy in the middle of the Australian forces, for no reason. Then the attack starts and he takes an AA and destroys 5 bf110 with just one nuclear H bomb Hyperadiactive bullet that destroys the entire plane as if it were a pjece of paper, then, some paratroopers would be able to land, so our american guy, who have only his 9mm caliber gun, go and charge the paratroopers, who are german so are idiot and start running and escaping and screaming like pussies while our american Captain Hero take them all with just few shots. After all the battle itself, some pretty sexy chick appear from nowhere and open her legs to the Captain America Hero and they return to America and get married and well, I have just written just another Hollywood movie

      Lmao. This is true. The main actor would be Chris Pratt or Channing Tatum. I would highly recommend the book "Snow and Steel" about the battle of the bulge (aka the Ardennes Offensive) for those of you who would like to see things a bit more from the german side. Many of them were good men and excellent fighters, and most of the time at a very young age, they didn't really understand that the cause they were fighting for was an evil one.

    My uncle was part of the 5000 men that couldn't be evacuated off the island and was captured. He spent the rest of the war in Stalag 18a in Austria until he died during a Russian bombing raid Dec. 20 1944 .
    The germans paratroopers had heavy losses largely due to their weapons being in canisters which they had to retrieve unarmed .
    The allies on Crete where begging England for more equipment especially fighters as there where only a few and new the invasion was going to happen since Greece was occupied. It never came .
    Thanks for the video explaining the stages of the battle .Very well done.

      I've been there myself last summer and all museums have been closed and all memorials have been abondend, the only 2 things still cared about is the German graveyard wich is taken care off by the German government and a private museum somewhere in the mountain.

      Cat Slave , ok, if you mean that there should be celebrations or parades and staff then yes they don't. But the battle is memorable and people mentions it and speak of it on tv documentaries or radio etc in whole Greece. I haven't been to Crete at the specific day and I don't know what exactly they are doing (visiting the graveyards or something) but it isn't that they don't care. The state should do more though if you want my opinion.

    Excellent video!! I am from Heraklion Crete! After two days from Maleme the german paratroopers came to Heraklion and made the invasion from a place called Karteros very near to Heraklion!! The mission had a code name "Mercur" «Unternehmen Mercur» Is the only success invacion in war history that made only from airborn troops!!

  • @CZ350tuner
    @CZ350tuner 7 років тому +13

    The RAF had 185 Squadron (fighters) based at Maleme airfield and they were tasked with defending Crete. Unfortunately they were equipped with the Brewster Buffalo Mark.I. (B-339 E) which differed from the version flown successfully by the Fins (B-239). To maximize profits by cutting costs, Brewster had bought up and installed already clapped out ex-commercial DC-3 and DC-4 airliner engines then sold the fighters to the Dutch and British.
    This profiteering by Brewster proved to contribute to the German success over Crete as all the Buffaloes in 185 Squadron were grounded with engine problems apart from one, which took off the morning of the attack on patrol, made it 20 miles from the base, suffered a massive engine power loss when the engine decided to self destruct and had to turn back. The Buffalo crashed on landing at the airfield and flipped over, however the pilot escaped unharmed as the plane unusually had a roll bar fitted in its design.
    This crash ended any hope of even token fighter defence of Crete.
    This overturned crashed Buffalo is featured in a German propaganda film shot of a Ju-52 swooping in to land on the runway over the top of it following the securing of Maleme airfield.
    Had 185 Squadron been equipped with Gladiators, Hurricanes, P-36 Hawks, P-40 Tomahawks, etc. the German's would have most likely attacked in a different way.

    • @stevenagelutton4322
      @stevenagelutton4322 6 років тому +3

      33 and 80 squadrons were both based out of Maleme, but the constant air attacks leading up to 20th May left them with 1 hurricane (W9298) between the two squadrons, which was ordered back to Egypt the day before the invasion. The incident with the Buffalo was actually a Naval Gladiator, and happened on the 14th May not the 20th

    The Crete disaster helped the allies in trying to avoid it happening to them. However, the airborne invasion of sicily and the rhine drop in 1945 were still costly for the allied airborne forces. The us assault on corregidor was perhaps the most potentially costly but succrsful contested air assault, that you never hear about, an ultra low drop(like crete) onto an ultra small drop zone.
    AATW!

    I met a former German paratrooper in 1994 at the 50th Anniversary of the D Day Landings.
    He was with the 6th Fallschirmjäger. He had jumped into Crete, his first combat jump.
    He also participated in the Fort Eben-Emael operation.
    He had also earned a Knights Cross for actions in Normandy.
    I remember interviewing him and said to myself, "There are those who would kill to be in my shoes right now."
    I was part of a US Army Military History Detachment (MHD).
    Earlier that day, veterans of the 90th Infantry Division of WWII were invited to attend a service at the German Military Cemetery.
    It is just as somber as the American Cemetery in Normandy.
    Like in the American cemetery, you will see headstones that say, "III Soldiers Unknown," or "V Soldiers Unknown."
    During the ceremony, the German veterans asked the American veterans if they could "now be friends."
    Upon saying that, the German veterans walked over to the Americans to shake their hands and introduce themselves.
    Needless to say, it was a very emotional experience for the veterans from both sides.
    Best duty I ever had.

    The Allies in this battle retreated due to poor communication and the inability of the commander to lead from the front. In addition, the Greeks on the island had weapons that could not be resupplied with British munitions. Otherwise, the outcome could have been very different.

      pioneers of airborne operations, absolutely.. but the best? i don't think so, they only truly excelled in non-airborne operations, and even then, they always sustained insanely high casualties all throughout the war. perhaps not as pathetic of losses as the british airborne forces but i certainly wouldn't call them "the best the world has ever seen". admirable in their own way, that they were so brave and courageous in a form of combat that had never been done before, but let's not pretend that they did much of any good anywhere besides in Italy.

      but in the video we see bf110s to support the paratroopers. couldn't they just take out the AA first? the bf110s are a much harder target for AA than the slow ju52s which also have like 30 people inside

    Wrong on the parachutes, I'm afraid. The Fallschirmjäger used a truly terrible parachute which forced the paratrooper to go as the wind carried him - he didn't have straps with which to control his descent - and somersault as he landed. He couldn't carry weapons with him and they had to be dropped separately. Oddly enough the Luftwaffe had normal parachutes, but the Fallschirmjäger were never equipped with them.

    • @rit11
      @rit11 Рік тому

      Yes. We learnt this when I did my parachute course in the Australian Army in the 70's. I seem to remember the Fallschirmjager chutes did not have a centre vent, causing greater oscillations. The F., being suspended from a single point rather than 4 liftwebs was totally at the mercy of the wind being unable to turn into wind to reduce ground speed.

    Jumped some bad DZs as one of Uncle Sam's airborne infantry over the years but the pics I've seen of the Cretan ones were absolutely incredible. Its wonder they didn't suffer more losses from jump injuries then they did (which were high indeed).
    Fallschrimjager also did not jump in firearms other than handguns unlike what is pictured here. They had to get to fallschrimbombes (the canisters shown being dumped out of the Ju52s) which even had their personal weapons. Many of their combat losses were b/c they were almost unarmed when counter attacking locals & Kiwis made early contact.
    Once they organized however, they started overrunning their objectives rather quickly as Imperial command was disorganized and hesitant. The various Allied forces on the island far outnumbered the Germans but German training and initiative, just like at Eban Emal, Norway, and throughout the 1940 campaign in France usually made up for their own command inefficiencies.
    Hitler took the wrong lesson from this campaign while both the UK & US realized the huge potential of the airborne forces when used properly.

    Nice video! Although the map is way too flat to be Crete. It's a quite mountainous island.

      The place they landed was a flat airfield / coast but a bit more inwards to the island it slopes up.

    IL-2. GREAT work GREAT video about such an awesome WWII event! Maybe do a video about the German airborne invasion of the Eban Emiel Fortress in Belgium in 1940. Also the Soviets vs. Japanese at the Battle of Kahlkin Gold in August 1939.

    If anyone is interested in testing their luck & seeing if they could do better on whichever side there is an old board game from Avalon Hill called Air assault on Crete with a variant/what if scenario of air assault on Malta.
    It just wasn't the paratroops that got decimated. The air fleet was devastated here and on the air routes from Sicily to North Africa.

    From what I heard H-man was VERY unhappy with the results (I.E. high casualties) and never wanted the German High command to launch another large scale airborne operation.

    Crete was yet another example of ULTRA providing a real edge. Without UTLRA the Germans would have had another easy victory. Instead they had a pyrrhic victory.
