Putin's invasion of Ukraine has prompted many countries to consider joining NATO for their own protection. But historic conflict over Cyprus between Greece and Turkey, and their economic dependence on Russia make it very unlikely to join any time soon.

I'm surprised that there was no mention of the Sovereign Base Areas, which are actually British territory. They are also the only British territory where the Euro is the legal currency.
Because it does not help people understand what is going on there in any way, so there is no need to mention it
Me too. I mean the few soldiers would be far less useful for NATO than the strategic advantage of using Cyprus as a base - which they already do.
@@evankant277 nope.
Because its an SBA not a colony.
I thought Gibraltar also had the euro has a legal tendency
You forgot to mention that the US (president at the time) and NATO, actually encouraged the Turkish invasion of 1974, in part due to concerns that the UK would've given up on its military bases in Akrotiri and Dhekelia. That would have left Cyprus more exposed to the USSR's sphere of influence. Also despite how the ethnic groups of Cyprus separated after the unofficial division, the Republic of Cyprus, "on the south", where the Greek Cypriots where displaced to, is still the same country founded in 1960 (that was supposed to represent both communities). These events left a lot of Cypriots, not only the Greek Cypriots, sceptical and sometimes resentful against NATO, across the political spectrum. A full NATO member launched a full scale invasion against a much, much weaker opponent, twice.
Nixon?
1974 British army had a large excercise on Cyprus when the Greeks paratroopers landed on the island and British forces were taken back to Britain leaving United Nations NATO soldiers behind.
There are two more British military units on the island but outside the SBA.
280 SU Det. Troodos and 33SU in Ayia Nap[a.
7:05 "In fact, during the First World War, the country's first president took part in the 1961 founding meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement".
World War One happened from 1914 to 1918. The Non-Aligned Movement _was_ founded in 1961, and Cyprus _did_ take part of its founding. Did you mix up World War One with the Cold War?
Cyprus can't join due to the Greek-Turkish conflict on the island.
Greece and Turkey are both NATO members tho, and should anyone from outside attack Cyprus both are highly likely to intervene are they not? Can't imagine them allowing anyone new get involved on the island.
And british millitary is there
Yes the British have their military here and the island is full of Russians really so many Russians live here that I think soon Cyprus will be very interesting for Russia
Greece has nothing to do with Cyprus whatsoever & tbh they don't care at all. They could never defend Cyprus & didn't even try in 1974
Does anyone else think he said Byzantine weirdly?
Yeah, and he said like after romans like byzantines themselves are not romans😅
He can't pronounced a lot of English words properly either.
10:11 "During the first world war the country's first president took part in the 1961 founding meeting of the non-aligned movement" Huh?
Should have been " Cold war"
FACT CORRECTION: Even after the Ottomans arrived the majority of the island still spoke greek. The concept of "Greek Cypriot" and "Turkish Cypriot" didn't exist until the British came (Divide and conquer). The main divide was along religious lines (Tax played a big role in many conversions to Islam and also the reason the Cypriot Church is so rich) but many could speak both languages and there were mixed Christian and Muslim villages. Even when the island became a republic the "Greek Cypriots" made up 80% of the population and "Turkish Cypriots" 18% (2% other). In the beginning of the video (1:40) you emphasise that the island "WAS" majority Greek speaking - At any point in time this is factually incorrect.
Side note: The Cypriot language does have the characteristics that it could be considered its own language and not just a Greek dialect. The language incorporates a lot of ancient Greek, Italian, and Turkish/Arabic words. But for political reasons I don't think anyone would ever seek to try get Cypriot recognised as it's own language.
It's all the British and Turkish and Greece fult they made it a problem
Heh, reminds of Maltese language that is basically latinized Arabic. That island also had a history of culture overlaps, but they are pretty united now as one people.
What? I'm Cypriot and I don't think I speak a different language from the Greek mainlanders...nor that our vocabulary is such extremely different from other regions of Greece. Pontic Greek, Cretan Greek, Ionian Island Greek etc are all dialectical different as Cypriot Greek.
Even more so, Cypriots participated in all straggles of the Greek people, beginning with the Greek war of Independence.
So, I don't want to thinking that you made this comment out of some agenda but you misinformed people trying to pursue a narrative that Cyprus was something "different"...more fluid and more exotic than the rest of the Greek speaking areas when it was actually a very ordinary Greek speaking land with its own specific characteristics.
I feel kinda insulted by your comment.
@@vanmars5718 I know. Most people don't realise it, but technically it has the characteristics that would allow it to be classified as its own language. A good example of a language that seems almost indistinguishable from its "parent" language is Scots, which is considered its own language.
Cypriot has more deviations from dialects like the Cretan's. Examples "ornitha" is an ancient Greek remnant and "kanjelo" is an Italian word. The Cypriot language has a LOT of these amalgamations that go unnoticed.
I'm sorry you feel insulted by the comments but I didn't make up the technicalities of what differences are needed for a "dialect" to be considered its own language... You're not alone in your thinking and your comments are the perfect illustration why I said even though it technically could be classified as its own language, politically it will never happen.
@@paris-panda What is considered dialect and what a language is a very thin line that always makes linguistics disagree. More importantly coming here, in a video that has nothing to do with language but about the Turkish invasion and occupation as a reason for us not join NATO and you feel that most important thing to let people known is that somehow the rest of the world should tell Cypriots that actually aren't really speak Greek but something else is EXTREMELY provocative holding a lot of agenda. Are u serious dude? You do that to us? Like what?
We are Greeks like it or not...
And when you have a state being invaded and separated by a power with an imperialistic ideology, is truly out of place and insensitive to try to pursue whatever tried to pursue.
Do u understand that or you still you'll try to play the fool???

Remember the Volt Europa episode 10 months ago? Well the Cyprus branch which is called Neo Kyma/Volt Cyprus (it also announced a candidate for the upcoming 2023 presidential elections) is advocating for NATO membership and has a very pragmatic solution to the partition problem in the form of a Federation but with the twist of the formation of a Federal District.
Most Turkish Cypriot descend from Islamised Greek Cypriots , Cypriot Latins(Levantines) and Cypriot Maronites. Only a small percentage comes from Ottoman settlers and most spoke Greek for a long time before adopting Turkish, in fact some still do speak Greek Cypriot as their only native language like in the village of Louroudjina.
Why do you pronounce byzantium wrong?
Is nobody else mentioning the fact that Luxembourg is not marked as Nato at the beginning?
1:58 the map shown here has been the status quo since 1974, not prior to that. Throughout the Ottoman period and British period, the Turks of the island were scattered all across. According to British government statistics in 1960 81.14% of the island were Greek and 18.86% of the island were Turkish.
For the north to become fully Turkish about 200.000 Greeks were forced to leave their homes by the Turkish army, and 6.000 Turks from the south moved to the north.
6000 Turks I am pretty sure there was more than that in Larnaca alone

Cyprus is not officially in NATO but in reality has troops from NATO member states. At the northern half, Turkey has an active military personnel of around 40k soldiers (mainland Turks). On the southern part, Greece has around 1k soldiers (mainland Greeks). Apart from that, there are 2 British military bases in Cyprus which belong to the UK and are therefore not considered Cypriot land due to the Treaty of Establishment in 1960. There are 3.5k active British troops in a 100 sq miles area. Those bases have been and are also used for NATO operations in the Middle East. To conclude, although, the Republic of Cyprus is not officially a member of NATO, there are 3 types of personnel which belong to the alliance.
Completely untrue. For starters the Republic of Cyprus completely funds the small Greek troops there with the intend to protect some zones too from the Turks. The Republic also provides electricity to the bases of Britain and also to the occupying's Turks because Greeks are in enclaves there. All 5 armies in the island including the UN forces and the Cypriot National Guard (the largest by far force on the island) are entirely relied on the republic. If Cyprus stopped feeding the British they would die the next day by starvation.
1. EOKA laid arms and disbanded in 1959. The colonels junta took power in 1967.
2. The WW1 has nothing to do with the founding meeting of the non - aligned that happened almost 40 years later.
3. In 1963 the vast majority of the Turkish Cypriots revolted against the Cypriot state and set up their own militias and semi - independent enclaves.
4. Russians started coming in the island of Cyprus after the collapse of the USSR, and not in 1960. But the same applies to Ukrainians as well.
5. Cyprus was forced to move into a service economy having lost 70% of its agricultural lands by the Turkish army and it's richest and most developed city as well.
I am afraid your knowledge about Cyprus is quite limited.
7:07 wasn’t aware the First World War occurred during 1961 lol
But how could Cyprus join EU, if it had disputed territories?
joining EU is different to joining NATO
Because it has no disputed territories. It’s a single country that’s being occupied by Turkey. Every single country on the planet recognizes this except from the occupiers themselves.
It has no disputed territories. Disputed is a whole different situation. Cyprus was invaded.
@@skinshaveskills So if it's single EU country occupied by Turkey, anyone from the occupied territory can have EU passport(Cyprus passport) anytime?
@@rustix3 Yes, all Turkish Cypriots have the right to get the Cypriot passport. They just have to go to the capital and get it issued.

@@20quid I might be wrong, but weren't the troubles mainly a domestic issue? As far as I'm aware The Irish Republic does not outwardly claim Northern Ireland and respects the British ownership of the region. Even if they would accept a potential diplomatic reunification.

tldr for this video: no, they won’t be joining nato anytime soon
Well yes, realistically Cyprus will just not join nato
Never we will not join nato with Turkey and our territory
Luxembourg is part of NATO. Correct your map or the people of Luxembourg will be very offended.
Cyrpus can't join NATO because 1/3 of it s occupied by Turkey and countries with territorial disputes can't join. The reason it s occupied by Turkey is because the British squatters wanted to at least have a base there and true to style they did in Cyprus exactly the same thing they did everywhere else they went or left. Divide and conquer. As long as there's a problem they can play "arbitor", they declared for themselves a base as sovereign territory and the "natives" can squabble all they like. As for NATO it doesn't need Cyrpus to join because the UK already has a base there and the UK is in NATO and that's all the island has to offer them anyway. Things always change so who knows, maybe one day France or the US or God forbid Russia or China will come to "protect" the Pakistani or Indian minorities in Britain which are of similar size to the Turkish minority in Cyprus. 🤣
The non-aligned movement is not an issue today. The foreign policy of the island does not depend on the choices of the country's first president. There are many scholars and analysts within Greece and Cyprus raising the question of NATO membership. Basically, only the communist party of Cyprus (AKEL) opposes this idea. As to the connections with Russia, look at the sanctions that Cyprus follows against Russia in the European Union. The ties with Russia cannot block NATO membership, Turkish veto can.
Still, nato is unpopular among Cypriots. Same reason Serbia won't ever join that organization
The majority (~80%) has always been Greek in the past 3000 years. You misspoke when you said this was not the case when the Ottomans came over.
I've always wondered what would happen if Jack had to sit on his hands while presenting.....
Could Cyprus join NATO.
Britain and USA have a staging platform in Cyprus.
In 1974 Portugal became a democracy, in 197x Spain became a democracy, and many other things happened. Why the 1970s? Why so many historical events?
Another factor might be the UK's sovereign base areas. Parts of Cyprus are actually still British territory, with a significant UK military presence. As long as British forces are on Cyprus the island is pretty safe, as any attack on the country would likely result in a response from the UK, a vastly more powerful country.
Rubbish, they wouldn't bat an eyelid, they resisted even letting refugees flee the fighting through the bases saying it could result in them being fired upon and I'm British/Cypriot
It didn't in 1974...
@@Pyrrhic537 Well yeah, but Turkey is also a NATO member so that makes things a little more... unorthodox. Wouldn't be a good look if NATO troops were shooting at each other. Also I think there was some agreement that if Turkish Cypriots were being persecuted then the UK acknowledged Turkey's right to intervene to protect them, and Cyprus had a lot of instability going on at the time.
@@someguy3766 There was no right to protect anyone only to guarantee the sovereignty of the nation of Cyprus something that Greece, UK and Turkey all betrayed.

TLDR: Turkey would veto it
i often feel like many ppl see nato more as a vauge idealistic ideological thing and not what it is: a concrete military organization for defensive maneuvers for illegal international actors. For some nations, being part of this is simply not in their interest or even more so: for some bigger nations, adding high risk nations is not worth it
People often confuse EU and NATO. While there are significant overlap countries that belong to both, they are two different entities. EU is an economic and political union (with more internal focus of cooperation) while NATO is a military union (with focus on external threat). People think that member states within NATO behave like the EU, but they are not.
To add to your comment NATO's primary concern is Russia. It is an organization found during the cold war to oppose the Soviets. As such not all countries have a geopolitical opposition or military concerns regarding Russia. In the case of Cyprus, its geopolitical interests are in Eastern Medeteranian Sea. So it doesn't make that much sense to join an organization whose area of interest do not align with theirs.
No. It is a defensive military alliance meant to defend against the enemies of NATO should they attack.
@@burningphoenix6679 Preety much the only enemy of NATO is Russia. Plus, most nations who joined NATO did so out of fear of Russian agression.

After 2004 unification vote failed by Greek Cypriots only reasonable option is partition of island. Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus should start to lobby in friendly countries to recognize TRNC as a state.
You can't illegally occupy a country wait 50 years & ask for a two state solution sets a dangerous precedent. What do the Greeks benefit from a 2 state solution? Thus they'd rather leave it as is. The only solution is a one state solution if Erdoğan doesn't want it the Greek Cypriots don't care it can stay as is. Basically this is all on Turkey & Erdoğan they decide Cyprus's future & 2 state solution isn't an option

The Romans were Byzantine, and the Byzantines were Roman. Consider how we now call the capital of Ukraine Kyiv instead of Kiev, because that is how the people there identify that city.
Byzantium is a word invented by historians.

Mistakes of the video:
The vast majority of the island's inhabitants have been Greeks*, not just Greek-speaking. And this continued even after the Ottoman rule. Also, ENOSIS (unification with Greece) was not supported just by 3/4 of the island's population. Over 95% of Greeks voted in favour of ENOSIS in a referendum that took place on January the 15th 1950. There was no invasion of Greece in 1974, the coup was conducted with internal forces mainly by Cyprus's National Guard. There was no escalation, but a full invasion by Turkey, causing 200,000 Greeks of the island to become refugees in their own homeland. Thousands dead and the fate of hundreds is still missing today. The invasion is presented by Turkey as a "peace operation" to protect turkish cypriots the same way Russia calls the invasion of Ukraine a "peace operation" for the sake of Russian speaking people in Ukraine. Geopolitics behind both invasions.
Do you really expect the Turks to just stand there and watch even more islands close to their homeland get annexed by Greece? Greece should have respected that Cypress became its own country. Turkey did the correct thing.
Totally agree with your point!
@@Aloy-sh6gq No it did not, Turks committed genocide in a land that was historically inhabited by Greeks.
@@universalspaceexpeditioner8259 How was it genocide? You can lie to yourself but not to others.
@@Aloy-sh6gq my friend, you do not even know how to spell "Cyprus" correctly so your view does not really matter to be honest. With the treaty of Lausanne, Turkey gave up all rights on Cyprus and re-gained a role after the agreements for the island's independence in 1959 as one of the three guarantor states. That was also the "legal" excuse of Turkey for having the right to intervene, per Turkey's claims. Turkey violated and continues to violate International Law by having, 48 years after, 40000 turkish troops in the so-called "TRNC". It is nothing more than a non-recognized puppet pseudostate, heaven for criminals internationally. As for the sovereignty of the Greek islands of the Aegean, Turkey's only option is to accept that they are considered to be an extension of the Greek land, same as Athens, Thessaloniki, etc. Or go to war.
TL;DR: turkey
I don't think anything will change until North Cyprus is recognised as an independent state. Until that happens no changes can be made. Maybe it will unite with Turkey, and maybe South Cyprus should do the same with Greece. A federal solution isn't on the cards anymore since North Cyprus is a determined Turkish separatist state.
Once this happens, then the North and South Cypruses can accede to NATO as independent states, or unite with their respective countrymen in Greece and Turkey. Then we can cede our British territories on the island to South Cyprus. And then slowly over time a real border can replace the current UN neutral zone.

Cyprus is a Greek sovereign state illegally occupied by Turkey, period. NATO/US only made things worse in the war.
Can't. Cyprus can't. Border dispute.
The best and most civilised way to secure this is to recognize seperate states on the island, one for the Greeks and one for the Turks. Then, both can become a member of NATO, not blocked by Greece and Turkey. Russia has been using Cyprus for its illicit operations for years. Cyprus being in NATO would likely end this. The US and EU should encourage Turkey and Greece to go for a two-state solution on Cyprus.

The video downplays NATO’s role in the invasion. NATO governments had agreed to the “Acheson Plan” which said Greece would overthrow the Cypriot government and conquer the island (thus becoming NATO territory) and Turkey would be given some parts. This is exactly what happened in 1974, with the NATO-controlled Greek Dictatorship supporting EOKA B’s coup, but because the Cypriot President survived the attack and because the Greek Junta fell the legitimate Cypriot government returned to the southern part. Today, Cypriots blame NATO for the invasion and the vast majority opposes it.

Because ottomans werent genocidal like russians angelox saxons

'could the MOON join nato???'
TLDR: Countries with ongoing territorial disputes cannot join NATO.
This included Ukraine from 2014

I can tell you in 4 sentences: Cyprus is divided into ethnically Greek and Turkish parts who don't like each other. Greece and Turkey support their respective ethnic brothers and also don't like each other. Greece and Turkey are both in NATO. Cyprus joining would bring this issue to the forefront.
Edit: read the thread before commenting "that's an oversimplification hurrdurr"
Yeah no shit it's over half a century of history in 4 sentences, dafuq u expect Sherlock
What if we did something like the good Friday agreement?
@@user-op8fg3ny3j no we need a Easter rising agreement, like before ww1, let the people vote to be part of the Greek or Turkish part of the island.
turkish cypriots dont hate greek ones and vice versa
this is complete bullshit, cyprus is divided into 2 halves, one has greek speaking Cypriots, the other is occupied by Turkey and has turkish speaking Cypriots. the 2 parts don’t dislike each other, a large majority of both communities support reunification and many many people from both communities cross to the other side every day to work, go to school, buy groceries, see their friends etc. While yes greek speaking cypriots do like Greece, the same cannot he said for turkish speaking cypriots where there’s a growing resentment towards Turkey, since they’re actively colonising north cyprus, trying to destroy the turkish cypriot identity and interfering in our democracy. Cyprus is Cypriot, not Greek, not Turkish, and peace in Cyprus will not be prevented
Unlike Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots genuinely supported UN’s unification plan and voted overwhelmingly yes back in 2004. Yet Greek Cypriots were rewarded with EU membership despite of their opposition to unification. International isolation of Turkish Cypriots still continues to this day.
Turkey.
Saved you 10 minutes...
I wish Turkey wasn't part of NATO, just too many problems.
A Pro-Russian Turkey expelled from NATO would certainly create bigger problems.
@@hazarozdemir8833 I live in Canada, but I'm English. Life here is not great at the moment as I have to go to the food bank and ration my food supply's. Life is getting harder for the west and the world, so people are less generous. Its also understandable that Turks don't trust or like Russia for historical reasons. As for the Kurdish people, they have been regionally distinct for a long time and could do with a referendum, but this is not the UK with that kind of democracy.
@@hazarozdemir8833 NATO dışında kalmış, Rusya yanlısı bir Türkiye daha büyük sorun yaratır dedim. Bundan Türkiye'nin NATO'dan çıkmasını istediğimi nasıl çıkardın anlamadım.
Key Answer: TURKEY. (Yes, in English, that is the only name for the country, TURKEY.)
Just waiting for a 🇲🇹Malta video next, and we’re done with all current non-NATO 🇪🇺EU member states!
I thought the UK still had Military bases on Cyprus.
It does, in a number of Sovereign Base Area locations. Episkopi, Dhekalia and Akrotiri are the major ones.
It does, I wonder if they will ever get the fk out of my country
Ah... my two most favourite nations groups living in my two most favourite and completely distinct empires, Romans and Byzantines
What would even be the benefit of Cyprus joining NATO if there are protocols in the EU that require military intervention in times of war between an EU member
Did you forget to mention that it was the Greeks who booted out Turkish Cypriots from parliament in 1961, and hijacked parliament completely disregarding international mechanisms?
Exactly or that the turks pleaded with UK and France to stop greece military dictatorship from decimating turkish Cypriots... Which they ignored OF COURSE TURKEY HAD TO ACT
NATO has been doing the dirty on Cyprus for decades. TLDR Forgot to mention the two holocausts of Greeks and Armenians at the end of the Ottoman Empire. 3 million died.
We founded civilisation and there is only around 15 million of us left worldwide believe me they killed alot more than 3 million
A Turkish-speaking Cypriot here. I just want to mention something that Turkish-speaking Cypriots do not want trnc or they are not 'enemies' with Greek speaking Cypriots. We want to reunify Cyprus. We want to get rid of Turkey, UK and Greece and live peacefully in our own state, Republic of Cyprus. Turkish-speaking Cypriots have been used as an excuse for bigger powers to do things in Cyprus. I am sorry to say that.
Why do you keep excluding Luxembourg on your Nato maps?
3:42 too bad, Turkey didn't originally own that land, the Ottomans (they are no more) and greece did. This is similar to CCP China (the republic of China is in Taiwan) and Taiwan and Russia (the soviet Union is gone) and Ukraine.
Cyprus's EU membership is a breach of international law since the founding agreement of the state prohibits Cyprus from joining any international organization of which both Türkiye and Greece are not members.
4:23 oh so this is another mess up the British empire did, ok.
5th reason is Cyprus is located completly (this is important) out of continental Europe
