Four retired gentlemen undertake a difficult, once in a lifetime railbiking adventure across the vast open spaces of Patagonia. Fighting ferocious winds, camping at abandoned stations and
interacting with the friendly locals, all the while enjoying the La Trochita experience as no one has before. Full story: www.latrochita.homestead.com Correct narrow gauge is750mmm which is 29-1/2". Wide gauge is1676mm which is 5'6". Correct spelling is Gaucho, not Goucho. View also: Railbike Wildlife, Extreme Railbiking.
Gentlemen, I want to thank you for the joy you have gifted me by recording this adventure. The hard work of placing and retrieving cameras while contending with the elements is incredible. Again thank you.
I shot and edited documentaries professionally for several decades and I have to say that you did a superb job under extreme conditions.
Congratulations! An epic adventure for all of us to share. THANK YOU!
You have made the effort worthwhile. Many thanks.
@Peter McLennan I was also thinking they did an outstanding job of filming & editing this incredible wild adventure! So, I’m glad a professional like you made that acknowledgment!! 👍🏻👏🏻
I too have been in photography and video production for several years and this is an excellent and, I might say, extremely interesting production. I'm now retired but haven't "rode the rails" yet. Great job, gentlemen.
Great, great job guys, thank you for the adventure....
@@peterhoffman2639 A lot of great photos that perfectly complement the video!
A lot of people go 'off the rails' in retirement, but not you guys!! Brilliant!!
This is awesome ! What a fun time you men had!
Fizeram a coisa certa!
Commenting b4 video. Love it.

Aaaaahahhahahahah.
Congratulations!! your story touched me in several ways. First of all because it gives me hope, you are the living proof that tours and cruises are not the only option for retired people, second: you've linked two places of the world I love: Patagonia (where I traveled several times) and Portland (some of you came from there) a city I love and enjoyed, and finally because your adventure is like a tribute to friendship among you and with environment, human as well as natural. My regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I didn't think I'll watch till the end I was wrong. Great job 👍🎁
Cool vid. I went to the site and looked at all the still shots. Amazing place.
Me too , i love it and thank you .
I did too.
Great!
Same! Great video of a fun trip!
What a wonderful story, with such beautiful scenery, amazing people, and top-notch editing. The Internet needs a lot MORE stuff like this!...
The world needs more adventurers.
Hats off to the young team for undertaking this beautiful and epic journey. Hats off to the locals for keeping the rail tracks and not removing them !
You guys are going super strong even after retirement, thank you for taking us to those beautiful places ❤
I'm 72yrs young and your trip was spectacular ...ive ridden a bike in stiff winds on long trips I know the agony ...your surroundings were breathtaking...great job men
Bravo, what a ride. Thanks for letting us tag along.
Simply awe inspiring. The scenery was deeply spiritual and you gentlemen were so respectful of all those good folk you encountered. Thank you so very much for sharing this beautiful film with us. God bless you.
What a thoroughly enjoyable experience watching that was!
Took me a lot more 25 minutes to get through it - there were so many amazing views, from the video and the stills, that I had to keep going back and pausing it to take a longer look.
Stunning!
I would like to express my deepest thanks For sharing this video With the world I totally enjoyed it Just goes to show you Never too old To enjoy a unique experience
That was awesome. That would be a once in a lifetime adventure. So glad you were able to go and then top it off by sharing with us. Thanks gentlemen.
Thank you. Watching your movie brought up many memories from riding the line in the late 1980ties from Esquel for the whole length including a three course meal in the diner and running out of coal to heat our coach. Also, an engine break-down let to many hours of delay. The strong but cold winds I could feel again ... I spend all stops outside on the ground trying to collect wood in order to keep a fire going in the coach's oven. And the sun-set looked just like in your movie.
What a fascinating trip! Four old friends embarked themselves in a very challenging and unparalleled trip not for the faint of heart, as most of it ran at elevations way higher than 3,000 ft. The sightseeings are so peaceful and the locals just amazingly friendly. I enjoyed watching this video so much!
the best travel show on the tube. i BECAME ADDICTED TO THE SCREEN. I felt frightened , elated. excited. emotional. you are certainly a great group of men. I am 82 years and in my younger life i formed and ran a touring cycling club and during my cycling years pedled over 26,000 miles. I last rode a bike 10 years ago in Scotland along disused railway trackbeds. but it became to much so had to stop. You are an inspiration to all who view this. thankyou very much.
I'm sixty six and I 'actually' thought I was doing something special because 'maybe' twice a week I ride twenty six miles on a paved bike trail. Still, I enjoy it. The trail was made from an old railway which was paved over. Plans are to lengthen the NY trail but I'm told no camping will be allowed.
3deeguy you are doing something special. I just turned 32, but after having stage four cancer, my heart has a hard time. Keep up the fun while you can! That sucks about the no camping!
@@neelonghunglow, Stage four? I'm truly sorry. I have no words.
Am I the only one thinking about Q assembling Little Nellie during "You Only Live Twice" during the clip about the bikes? 😀👍🛠️
Hopefully you know Jesus as your Savior.
What an absolutely incredible thing to do. As an old retired bloke myself I would have loved to do that trip. Well produced video. Congratulations. You made my day!
You have proven, we are never to old to accomplish great things. Wonderful journey. Thank for taking us along.
Just fabulous to enjoy your bike trip of this wild Patagonia, with phenomenal landscape, open space, mountains, free-roaming cattle, sheep, nice local children & people!
Very well done documentary.
Thank you!
Amazing journey and a beautifully produced video. You have shown that language need not be a barrier when kindness and respect are given. Thank you for lifting my morning.
Thank you for a wonderful experience.
Diversity has its roots
Really a gentleman journey. Congratulations team Railbike.
It's insane to travel and not be able to communicate. You must miss over half of the experience.
That was absolutely wonderful. I had never heard of rail biking before. What a great adventure. I am envious. Thanks for the video.
Loved everything about this, including the old train at the beginning! Wonderful!
When kids show you thumbs up instead of their middle finger, you realize that those kids are happy with little.
With similar decades on the Earth, I salute you gentlemen and raise my glass. Thank you for the courage, and execution for those of us who may not have the (remaining) physical ability to join you. So enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing your experience. Nicely done.
Kevin Morin , Well said Sir
the worst part was the end.... I could've watched another hour of your journey. I got lost in the beauty and serenity of your trip. what an amazing journey. We live in such a fast paced society here in the U.S. that sometimes we forget things are slower in other parts of the world. Thank you for sharing your trip with the rest of "us".

I feel proud of you guys for this impressive travel!! I hope one day I have the encouragement for doing the same. And thanks for showing the patagonia to nearly 3 million people
You guys make me jealous. What a ingenious way to travel and bonding of a handful old Geezers. Your photographer and editor deserves a special thanks. From an 84 year old fellow Geezer. Thanks sharing this documentary with us.
All anyone can say, is "Wow." Incredible journey of a lifetime. I was also glued like all the other comments below me. Thanks for sharing.
Well done lads!! What a journey and stunning scenery. Loved every minute with you all!
That was so enjoyable to watch. Something about the home movie feel of the whole production draws you in in a really unique and special way compared to something more produced and "professional". Loved it.
What an adventure !! Really well done and thanks for taking all of us along.
Loved it's quietness, subtitles only, and, well, just loved it all. Bravo !
And Richard Clayderman as background Instrumental music.
I wouldn't of thought in a million years to even see such a Trip like this, it was really nice privilege to watch I really was, Thanks 👍
Loved the more than a decade old adventure! Hope the gentlemen are enjoying the remenienses of the epic journey. The editing and presentations make it look as if it happened only a few months ago. Congratulations to all those involved in this amazing journey
They are dead.
This has got to be one of the best and interesting adventures on Utube that I have seen. We need more of these trips and adventures to watch. Than you for sharing.
My expectations weren't very high when I clicked on this clip. However, the editing was superb and you took a potentially dull subject and turned it into a great story. Well done!
One of the best things that I have ever viewed on UA-cam.
The vastness of the Patagonian landscape compared to your own size has nothing to do with your relative significance. Do not sell yourselves short. That was a grand adventure, full of significance. Well done, gentlemen, well done!
What an adventure! Just Wow. The people (specially the kids), the towns and villages, the animals, railroad stations, it was magnificent. Awesome ride!!!
How cool are you guys!!! What a great trip. The experience of a lifetime.
Congratulations!
Thank you for sharing!, I grow in that's place, I'm far from there now, but I cried seeing this, you make feel like I was there again, I was so happy in those years
I can only imagine how it must have felt. What a truly beautiful landscape
What an Adventure!!! I loved every minute of it and didn't want it to end!
Best of both worlds; biking and rail travels, you guys are genius!
What a fantastic thing to do. I can well understand why you were melancholic once the journey was over. Great to watch, thank you
Beautiful scenery and people...amazing adventure...Thank you so much for sharing! I can see how this trip was a spiritual quest...food for the Soul
Absolutely mesmerizing story. Good on you guys for making the journey of a lifetime.
Excellent production.
Hats off to you 4 tough old birds, what a unbelievable adventure. I'm impressed 👏
Amazing journey guys! Love the shot of the guys laid out resting with the vultures overlooking😂. And the children “porters”, so adorable.
A "railbike" is something that I imagined and drew pictures of, when I was a little kid. I thought it was my own invention! I'm so happy to see it as a real thing. Great fun, a great adventure, and a great video. Cheers!
Timothy Hunter ye sometimes I think of some cool design, example( a torque wrench on a impact gun) only to realize it's already a thing
We used rail bikes to move around on a large underground mine in the 1970's. They were small bicycles on 4 aluminium wheels. No brakes, banana seats. But, the rail was only 24 inch gauge.
@@amartseren9548 Oh, yeah. The centrifugal clutch.
Great minds think alike. I thought of making one over 50 years ago.
I couldn’t stop watching. I just have to share. What an extraordinary adventure. And meeting lots of curious, welcoming people along the way.
So glad and grateful that you documented this marvelous journey project and shared it with us all.
🙏🏼❤️🐾💫
Came for a quick look at the gear to ride the rails, 25 mins later....
Fantastic video, thank you for sharing!
JESUS SAVES YOU FROM HELL BUT YOU MUST STOP ALL SIN
Beautiful! Loved every second of this video. Thank you so much for sharing your incredible experience with the world.
beauty .... I'm 80 years old, but I enjoyed this adventure of yours exploring strange lands, and with such vitality worthy of young athletes. I congratulate you... and live LIFE 👏👏👏👏
Superb. I watched every minute. I would have jumped at the chance to do such an amazing adventure. I did not even know railbiking was a thing! I laughed at the suitcase until I saw it in action. As a lifelong backpacker, I would do it that way too. HD makes everything so much more relatable. Patagonia - what a place. Thank You.
Great vid! I must say, from what you showed, the trail was in remarkable condition!
Truly enjoyable to watch and “ride” along side with these 4 adventurers.
Thank you friends from Patagonia, for venturing into our lonely and magical places. If you are going to do next, I will accompany you ...💪🧡👋
Thank you very much to share your amazing adventure!!! I enjoyed so much to see your history. Thank you.
Wonderful video of what appears to have been a true 'bucket-list' endeavor. Equally amazed that the rails appeared to be in such good condition.
I enjoyed every moment of this video. Thanks for making it and sharing with us.
what about the moment with the naked old man in the river...
Thanks for sharing. What a wonderful adventure. This is now on my bucket list!
Magnificent!! Smiled throughout the video. Thank you for a wonderful vicarious experience!
Absolutely mesmerizing!
Thanks for taking me along!
thisissoeasy mesmerized by that old mans wang, eh?
Some of my friends and I actually did this in Southern California decades ago in the 70s. Only ours were two ten speed bikes welded together and we rode on full size abandoned tracks. Eventually we powered the unit with a 5hp motor with a platform between the rails to ride on. It carried 2 to 4 people and we sat in lawn chairs while riding. I still have photos of this. This is the first time I have ever seen anyone else do anything like it.
then the cal state gov band 10 speeds and you cant have anything more than 3 without chp permit
@@paulscott1091 I never heard of that. But it is Californiastan...
Pics or it didn't happen.
@@Shallcross That's what I tell my students. I have photos of us on the tracks in Southern California. We used to ride two sets of rails. One abandoned and one active. The active one was privately owned and we knew the track maintainer crew so we had the run schedule.
@@mobiltec Think you could find a way to show us photos? Would be awesome to see
These are 4 real adventurers. Not an Africa twin nor BMW GS in sight. My hearty congratulations to you all. Thank you for sharing you once in a lifetime trip.Wonderful. Loved the bike engineering ingenuity.
It is so wholesome seeing how much of a hit you guys were with the many children you met on the journey, they all seemed to love spending time with you folks.
Watching the little fellas chauffer your suitcases was funny.
I give respect to the people of Patagonia that preserve history - even if unused it is cherished and not stripped. The world can learn from you. What breathtaking beautiful country scenes
What we could learn out of this video is that for foreigners it’s not worth while learning Spanish: it’s just kind of imperialism
I have never heard of this but what a brilliant idea. Railways go places many roads do not.
How remarkable. Thank you the wonderful adventure. Am so glad you videoed the trip. Well worth watching.
What a wonderful concept! Thank you for sharing this part of your lives!
Loved the video, FRIENDSHIP GOALS !!!! With so much wind couldn't help but think of a sail but tricky on those bridges. Nice rig .
What an incredible journey!
They should start tourist excursions like this. People would love it!
Would be awesome! Id pay for that experience (:
I really enjoyed watching your adventure. Thanks so much for posting this.
A wonderful experience wrapped brilliantly in glorious landscapes. Thanks for taking us with.
I found myself totally immersed in this video, it has a southwestern American landscape, though the mountains were gorgeous.!!
Absolutely fascinating and captivating.
Great video and best of luck. 😉
Definitely a high desert environment. I wonder what the average altitude was? Looks like it could be a brutal place in the middle of winter and very hot during summer.
@@JohnS916 winter - 20 ° Celsius I don't know how much it is in ° F, sorry for my bad english
Great video and story. Retired railroad conductor and I love riding rail-trails. So many interesting things to see.
Outstanding! Thank you for taking me on your journey! One for the bucket list.
What a fantastic experience! Thank you for sharing with us! Beautiful video and music as well!
Thank you for sharing this great adventure, what a great idea to explore those remote wonders of our world.
What an amazing adventure! Thank you for taking us along. The beauty of Patagonia astonished me. I had no idea.
I love that you made a point to interact with the children you encountered. They'll be telling the stories to their grandkids and I'd bet a few of them build their own rail bikes too.
A heart-warming story. A most excellent adventure, party on dudes!
Thank you UA-cam algorithm for suggesting this fascinating journey.
This is one of the best UA-cam videos I have ever seen. What an adventure!
Y’all are some bad dudes!! What a magnificent journey. Thanks so much for sharing
This was a most intriguing, riveting, yet relaxing video! I couldn't stop watching. Well done, and thank you for sharing!
The adventure u show us is classic one. Never imagine how railbiking is. Love to watch agin n agin. U people have guts to do that .Hats of to you. Thk for showing.
Thank you for this lovely video - you clearly had an amazing adventure.
Had to watch it again I enjoyed it so much. My wife liked it too. What an experience it must have been. Thanks again guys
A much better way to spend retirement than sitting on my duff at a computer most of the day.
Like me.
@@Howrider65 And me......though I excuse myself with a wife to look after since her stroke stopped her from looking after me. At 73 still on track to try the world squash champs for the over 90's ( if there is such a thing in 17 years time ......or the cancer doesn't chew me up before.)
@@japeking1 you are indeed not only excused but doing very worthy work
Waxman Real adventure is not always fun, easy, etc. But you never forget it, and always have the sense of accomplishment. Some people don’t need that. Others have a inner drive for that. I admire the fact that 4 guys all we’re adventurous enough to do it. I always had friends through out my life, that never had an adventurous spirit in them. So I was always stuck doing mine alone.
@Waxman The wind was certainly blowing hard. I wonder how much time they spent pedaling against the wind vs with the wind? I think it would have been nearly improbable to finish this ride if the majority of the distance was pedaling against the wind.
Magnificent !!!!! Simply brilliant & magnificent !!! Thank you 4 shareing a "moment" of your lives with us !!!! Just magnificent !!!!
That was incredible! I love trains, the tracks and everything about them. Horses were awesome, the bridles were super odd though. Thanks for sharing, was peaceful....
While watching this I was feeling the adventure. thank you for the video.

A fabulous record of a wonderful adventure. I have recently shown this to my cycling buddies and we are taking inspiration to undertake our own. Brilliantly filmed and edited too.
Thanks for sharing your adventure. The views were amazing along with the beautiful people you met along the way.
