Phil sang, acted, and played this role like a hand in glove. Nobody could have played it as he did. It just demonstrated how superb a singer and actor he was. We love you Phil x peace and love xx :-)

I remember when this came out, I had to have it just because Phil sang on it. The rest of the album didn't disappoint either. I now have the original Lp, a Cassette and the remastered Cd's. A favorite for sure. I still miss Phil....

For me it was the opposite. I bought it because I have been fan of the story since the 70s, plus it was (incorrectly) being marketed as a Justin Hayward album at the record store. I am a big Mood Blues fan, so I bought. I'm an even bigger Thin Lizzy fan, so when I heard Phil's voice, I also wet myself.

Elvis was a clown. Didn't write any music or lyrics himself, sang in a fake voice and could barely strum a guitar. Comparing him to a real musician and talent like Phil is ridiculous.

This is a very good song, but it is part of a story and to understand the context of the song, one must listen to the whole story.
I waited 30+ years to see Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds on stage - very worth the wait. There were different people singing songs, but the whole performance was faithful to the album.

    • @michaelpettersson4919
      @michaelpettersson4919 4 роки тому +1

The context: Nathaniel have totally lost it due to the ongoing invasion and the horrors it brings. Still I suspect that this guy would probably be on some sort of medication today. Maybe he is bipolar and Beth, his wife are used to set him straight during his moodswings. This time thou it is way worse due the circumstances and her sudden death finally push him over the edge. A tradgic figure really. In the book thou, no wife was mentioned and he was unnamed and mostly had annoying eating habits (not good when hiding with meager resources).

The Spirit Of Man (Die Seele Des Menschen)
    Jeff Wayne
I suddenly noticed the body of a parson lying on the ground in a ruined churchyard
I felt unable to leave him to the mercy of the red weed, and decided to bury him, decently
    Nathaniel! Nathaniel!
    The parson's eyes flickered open
    He was alive!
Nathaniel, I saw the church burst into flame, are you all right?
    Don't touch me!
But it's me, Beth! Your wife!
No! You're one of them - a devil!
    He's delirious!
Lies! I saw the devil's sign!
    What are you saying?
The green flash in the sky
His demons were here all along, in our hearts and souls
Just waiting for a sign from Him
And now they're destroying our world!
But they're not devils, they're Martians
    We must leave here!
Look, a house still standing, come Nathaniel, quickly
We took shelter in a cottage, and black smoke spread, hemming us in
Then a fighting machine came across the field
Spraying jets of steam that turned the smoke into thick, black dust
    Ulla!
    Dear God, help us!
The voice of the Devil is heard in our land!
Listen, do you hear them drawing near
In their search for the sinners?
Feeding on the power of our fear
    And the evil within us?
Incarnation of Satan's creation of all that we dread
When the demons arrive those alive would be better off dead!
There must be something worth living for
There must be something worth trying for
Even some things worth dying for!
And if one man can stand tall
There must be hope for us all
Somewhere, somewhere in the spirit of man
Once there was a time when I believed
    Without hesitation
That the power of love and truth could conquer all
    In the name of salvation
Tell me what kind of weapon is love when it comes to the fight?
And just how much protection is truth against all Satan's might?
There must be something worth living for
There must be something worth trying for
Even some things worth dying for
And if one man can stand tall
There must be some hope for us all
Somewhere, somewhere in the spirit of man
People loved you, and trusted you, came to you for help
Didn't I warn them this would happen?
Be on your guard, I said, for the Evil One never rests
    I said exorcise the devil!
But no, they wouldn't listen, the demons inside them grew and grew
Until Satan gave his signal and destroyed the world we knew!
    No Nathaniel, oh no, Nathaniel
No Nathaniel, no, there must be more to life
There has to be a way that we can
Restore to life the love we used to know
(No) Nathaniel, no, there must be more to life
There has to be a way that we can
Restore to life the light that we have lost
Now darkness has descended on our land
And all your prayers cannot save us
Like fools we've let the devil take command
Of the souls that God gave us
To the altar of evil like lambs to the slaughter were led
When the demons arrive the survivors will envy the dead!
There must be something worth living for
    (No, there is nothing!)
There must be something worth trying for
    (I don't believe it's so!)
Even some things worth dying for
If just one man could stand tall
There would be some hope for us all
Somewhere, somewhere in the spirit of man
Forget about goodness and mercy, they're gone!
Didn't I warn them? Pray, I said! Destroy the devil, I said!
They wouldn't listen! I could have saved the world!
But now it's too late, too late!
    Dear God!
A cylinder's landed on the house
And we are underneath it, in the pit!
The Martians spent the night making a new machine
It was a squat, metallic spider with huge, articulated claws
But it, too, had a hood in which a Martian sat
I watched it pursuing some people across a field
It caught them nimbly and tossed them into a great metal basket upon its back
Beth! She's dead! Buried under the rubble Why?
Satan! Why did you take one of your own?
There is a curse on Mankind
We may as well be resigned
To let the devil, the devil take the spirit of man
As time passed in our dark and dusty prison
The Parson wrestled endlessly with his doubts
His outcries invited death for us both - and yet, I pitied him

This was a moment in time when everything and everyone aligned perfectly to produce what can only be called a milestone in musical history. There was nothing like this before its conception and there has been nothing like it since. It was simply a titanic achievement by all involved. The original cast obviously fully understood Jeff's Concept and just ran with it. Masterpiece is bandied around very loosely these days but this is an album that truly deserves that distinction.

If you've come here because, like me, you are a fan of Thin Lizzy and Phil, and wondering what this track is, I will explain. Its a song taken from 'The War of the Worlds' by Jeff Wayne, cut in the early 80s. Phil is playing the part of a preacher in the narrative and its all set to eerie evocotive and haunting music. Its quite the masterpiece actually, and terrifying to children as reviews here ua-cam.com/video/1tM-Ww_eGLU/v-deo.html, will contest. Some sounds on this LP I've never heard anywhere else, from the synthesisers of the early 80's. That link takes you to it in its entirety. Best listened to with headphones in bed in the dark, then you can fully concentrate on it : ) Enjoy!

Okay, this music is from Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds: The Spirit Of Man. Wonderfull, splendid etc. ...But I don't understand the picture above from the man holding his guitar. Was he one of the musical genies?

The man in the picture is called Phill Lynott. He was an Irish musician and songwriter. He is singing the man's part of this song.

War of the Worlds. Easily one of the best things I heard growing up. And that includes Thin Lizzy. Totally Top Post. Sound a bit distorted though. Could do with a re-edit.

Look on Amazon for "Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds", released in 1978. Other versions have been released since then, but stick to the original.

I am a bit confused?. I asked no question, but just made an observation. I do not understand your reply as it seems somewhat defensive and I see no reason why. We have the like of Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynott in common, and that is a good thing. I meant no offense and regret it if you saw it as that. Peace
