Ofra has been compared to Madonna since the 80s for many reasons, she is called the Israeli Madonna. I also chose some of Madonna's best clips, ;) and Madonna is my favorite artist so trust me I didn't make the video to hate on Madonna. It's a comparison video, not a hate one :)

The ONLY reason this video would even *exist* is because Ofra was called the “Madonna of the Middle East” because she was the first “pop star” that came out of Israel….that’s where it ends. Ofra has the voice of an angel. Madonna is a great dancer and can carry a tune, but she’s no singer.

Forget battle, that ain't even a contest. As for why, back in the 90s, people were trying to explain what a big deal Ofra was in the Middle East by calling her "the Madonna of the desert." I'm thinking someone took offense on her behalf, for the same reason you were saying the video does a disservice to her. I don't think they were trying to disrespect Madonna, either, but that always bugged me, too. They really just can't be compared as artists. It also bears mention that Ofra's career was cut short by her tragic passing in 2001, I believe. So while Madonna is unquestionably a legend, she's got an extra two decades of career when it comes to measuring success, too. It's as unfair to compare Ofra's more measurable success to hers as it is to compare her voice to Ofra's, Although to be fair, she was also never all that focused on the pop star side, devoting a large part of her career to the promotion (and frequently preservation) of Yemeni & Middle Eastern Jewish folk music. Tons of her music is a capella or accompanied only by simple traditional instrumentation, and when she appeared on shows & the like, she'd usually just be there doing the interview & then hold her mic up & blow the roof off the joint without even getting out of her seat. So I can't see her ever doing the huge shows & such that Madonna built that success on. I will say, though, that I think it's a horrible irony that we lost Ofra right before the internet really took off & replaced the US as THE great cultural melting pot. Just imagine the impact she could have had. Rest her gentle.

Madonna's a great performer who can be a much better singer than she's usually given credit for. Some of the clips here show how great she can be. But Offra... is literally a trained classical singer of her region and culture. A trained CLASSICAL singer. Different concepts, different deliveries. So we should use different criteria.

Here in North America the Disco scene was focused on North American production until they indtroduced synthetizers were the rest of the world had a clear lead. Madonna was the voice queen in the disco scene and sudenly Ofrah came in also with her mastery of voice control on her disco version of Galbi. This was the birth of what we call now the world music genre. But the two artists had different musical and market goals and it was the last time they were in competition. You are right to be confused all the videos in this vocal battle have been extracted from the time after when they were not competing for the same market taste.
