Thank you so so much for reccommendkng blackwells!!! I love the UK editions so much! I'm sad I can't find it in hardback but paperbacks will be so beautiful!!!
It's so sad there aren't matching hardbacks of the UK editions because they are stunning! It was a cover change so books 1 and 2 are only in paperback in this style
Great review, Abby! I like hearing that there is so much historical detail but can understand how that might affect attention to close character development. Looking forward to getting to this eventually!
Hi 👋 I’ve read the grace of kings it was unique writer... but it took me while to get used to book and the writing once I was over that I really enjoyed the book. Thanks for the video!! Happy reading to you! 🥳⚔️🎥
Oh this is very helpful! I was unsure if this was going to be for me, but hearing you talk about it... sounds so cool! I'm definitely going to try to read at least the first two books to decide. Thank you! 🙃
Thank you for this video! I'm currently listening to Grace of Kings and was surprised that I didn't like it more. Based on your comments I think I might just power through with the rest and hope that I like them more. I'm basically only listening on my bike rides to and from work though, so it's going to take ages to finish 😂
Hi Abby……Always value your opinions on fantasy, your content got me into John Gwynne so will always appreciate that. Glad to hear such good things about this series. I had £10 credit on my Waterstone’s card and picked this up with that today, so very much looking forward to starting this once i’m finished Memory Thorn and Sorrow series by Tad Williams (Highly Recommended by the way)
I started the first book and so far feel like hearing you and other booktubers talk about it beforehand gave me the perfect expectations to go into it with. I'm able to enjoy it for what it is rather than being frustrated about that distance feeling with the characters. So I'm excited to continue on!
I wanted to watch this video once I had at least read the first book, but I need to be realistic and accept I won't get to it soon. 😅 I looked up how "silkpunk" is described and discovered Ken Liu actually coined it for his quartet. He says "In creating the silkpunk aesthetic, I was influenced by the ideas of W. Brian Arthur, who articulates a vision of technology as language. The task of the engineer is much like that of a poet in that the engineer must creatively combine existing components to solve novel problems, thereby devising artifacts that are new expressions in the technical language." This man must be an absolute genius! Can't wait to read his books! 👏
I feel like Ken Liu is a genius! From reading his books and hearing him in interviews he sounds so articulate and has such wide interests. I hope you love his books.
I find with some epic fantasy the first book can be slow due to the ammount it has to set up. It sounds exactly like what I would like but im still scared they are huge
Thank you for this. I DNFed after more than half way through the first book, thinking I wouldnt ever pick it up again. Now... I might have to reconsider , knowing that the 1st is different from the rest
First book is kinda hard and jarring to get into; I almost DNFed it three times and now the series is in my top five favorite series ever. The second half of GoK is also a lot better, but there's still a lot of distance with characters until book two.
Exactly what Kyle said. The first book is really quite different from the rest of the series. But I can understand sometimes you don't want to push through a book your not liking to get to "the good stuff"
Thanks foe sharing your overall thoughts. I have most of the series, just missing the last book, and am hoping to start it very soon. The editions you have are stunning.
Excellent video!! If I hadn't already read (and loved) this series, then you would undoubtedly have convinced me to pick it up with this review :) Sounds like we had the exact same reading experience with this series, book 1 made me nervous to continue, but book 2 made me fall head over heels in love! I particularly liked all the anthropological aspects of this series, the culture clashes were fascinating to see play out and I loved all the rich history and lore. I will read anything Ken Liu writes at this point, he is just a masterful storyteller!! 🤩

I could see you really liking it Johanna. Hope it's a hit when you do pick it up

I am definitely going to make this a priority next year!!
YES!
Great overview! I'm glad you ended up liking it so much. I would be curious if you ever reread GoK how you would feel about it though, haha.
I do wonder that too. Maybe it will happen one day
God damn it, I'd been trying not to put this onto my tbr because it's so big but it sounds amazing!
Abi you should!

I hope you love it as much as I did 💜

I hope the book picks up for you. The second book was where I really fell in love with the series.

I have Memory, Sorrow and Thorn on my TBR...one day it will happen 😂
I plan on getting to the first book soon! It sounds super interesting!
I hope you love it Jessi! 💜

Yeah the first book was a ton of set up. They are really good but I agree they are very chunky

Yes exactly! I was so nervous before I started Wall of Storms because I felt like I wasn't loving the series but then boom that all changed.
