So we would play a game with him where we would try to describe smells that he hadn't smelled using combinations of the ones he had. I feel like my personal best was trying to describe the smell of the ocean:
    20 parts rain
    2 parts fresh cut grass
    1 part pennies
    1 part ham

The smell that you smell when approaching the ocean is the smell of the coastline not the ocean.
In the late 1960s I worked on shrimp out of Tampa Florida for a little over 1.5 years. When approaching the the coast from where I lived I could smell the coastline.
After working for 1 to 3 weeks out in the Gulf of Mexico when you get near the coastline you could smell the same smell.
The smell of the open ocean is a clean fresh smell, I noticed the same thing when going from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Jacksonville, Fla. by ship.

And it isn’t vanilla or caramel,
And it isn’t forget-me-nots or lilies,
    Or new-mown hay, or daffy-down-dillies,
And it’s not what the barber rubs on Father,
And it’s awful, and yet you like it rather.
No, it’s not what the barber rubs on Daddy,
It’s more like an elderly finnan haddie,
Or, shall we say, an electric fan
    Blowing over a sardine can.
It smells of seaweed, it smells of clams,
It’s as fishy as ready-made telegrams,
It’s as fishy as millions of fishy fishes,
In spite of which you find it delishes,
You could do with a second helping, please,
And that, my dears, is the ocean breeze... "

Wait ... I love this presenter, totally love her stuff; but ...
Did Olivia have to go because she got all that flack about her looks?
And what's happened to Michael? Who's mode of dress is no longer the sharp suit and tie but the chumky jacket and floof, how does this match this en pointe presentation look?
Is Scishow losing the fight against mainstream media?? Damnnit Hank!!

And now I can tell my fellow graphic design student what should go into the cologne bottle label she designed, which featured a foggy scene of a rotting pier and muddy inlet bottom with dead fish and hovering seagulls.
The logo? A life-preserver emblazoned with "Low Tide". (Or maybe it was an anchor, or both -- this was 11 years ago!)

Negative climate effects make it into basically every scientific video about nature nowadays.
If plancton can't sustainably absorb a high amount of CO2, we can't rely on it to clean up the atmosphere. How many more absorbtion techniques function like this?

Sorry to do this but you got a couple of things fundamentally wrong in this video: DMS isn’t a gas, it’s a liquid with a boiling point of 37°c. Also it doesn’t smell of rotting eggs, it smells vegetal like green beans and cabbage. As a brewer I’m pretty familiar with the odour and I have to say it isn’t much like the smell of the sea. Maybe it’s a component in that typical marine smell but not the main one by any means.

My house is only about 200 feet from the waterline (it was severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy), and if I stick my head outside I can smell that oceanic sulfur.

You failed to mention the problem with dams on rivers. They prevent sediments from reaching the ocean. The sediments would normally neutralize carbonic acid, keeping the Ph of the oceans more stable. Humans have disrupted the cycle that helps regulate ocean acidity.

hum... can't like this one.. I'm pretty sure what most people have smelled as sulfury was on the coast, where low tides exposes sediments when dead there's algae. What you explained sounds like an offshore thing. Maybe do "Why does the ocean smell bad at low tides?" to properly cover what most people are familiar with?

In New Jersey the smell is strongest in the back bays.
It is most likely during a low tide when the smell is at its strongest.
Sometimes it can be quite unpleasant.
I guess that is why the clouds are usually the largest around the back bays.
I always wondered why the largest clouds in Atlantic City New Jersey were so big around the back bays as apposed to the ocean side.

Before watching, I fear the answer is going to cover be a result of the writer's experience with the ocean. Middle of the north Atlantic and middle of the south pacific have similarities, but do not really smell the same. Also, coastal areas don't smell like the ocean, they smell like the local coast.
45 seconds in... that is a distinctly coastal smell.

This last Summer, I went for a drive on the Northern California coast. There must have been an interesting bloom going on, as the ocean smelled like Ovaltine made with spoiled milk.

I only know the oceans around North America, but in my experience the sea everywhere has a distinct smell, not at all strong but identifiable, which is not sulfurous, and not like rotten eggs. I have smelled sulfurous smells in some places at some times - but the underlying smell of the sea is always there too. It would be very odd if the sea smelled of only one chemical compound. It's an interesting video, but I suspect that it is misleading because it's been oversimplified.

Contrary to the first line. I cannot Smell the ocean used to live by it and lov d walking along it but I moved to the city and now no more ocean smell. Even when I go back to my small ocean town, don't know why maybe a question for this channel failing that Dr Karl.
