  • Acclaimed biographer Barry Miles discusses his new work, Call Me Burroughs, with John Tytell
Decades ago, Norman Mailer made the assertion that "William Burroughs is the only American novelist living today who may conceivably be possessed by genius," and few writers have come close to the sheer production and effect that Burroughs had on an entire literary generation.
In his newest biographical work, celebrated writer Barry Miles provides a closer-than-ever glimpse of Burroughs' legacy, from his well-known writings, to his experimental recordings and visual arts projects, as well as snapshots of his personal life. Barry is also the author of the wildly popular volume, Hippie, which lends shape and cohesion to a period of great change in American history.
Joining Barry for the evening will be Pulitzer prize winning biographer John Tytell, author of the Paradise Outlaws: Remembering The Beats.

The Barry Miles biography CALL ME BURROUGHS is one of the most mesmerizing books I have ever read. It reads like a novel yet is filled with facts after fact about Burroughs. I would love to meet Miles.

Really enjoyed this -- thanks for posting. If I ever wrote a book, I would want someone like John Tytell to respond to it. Makes some of us miss public discourse -- yet another facet of American life discarded by the anti-intellectual majority who believe stupidity is a virtue.

Didn't think the trilogy was "hard" to get through, have read all three multiple times & enjoy them, they are very transporting.

Love listening to Barry talk humbly but passionately about his books, especially in relation to WSB. Cute book shop girl too

This fellow on the left, Tytell, is exactly the reason why I dropped out of academia.

Burroughs was cool because he just didn't give a damn. This irreverence screams at you in Junky. He seemed to be above all the things that would cause most people great concern. One of the least judgmental souls to ever put pen to paper. I don't think he even turned up to the obscenity trials over Naked Lunch in the States. He was called the Godfather of Punk and a whole list of other things, that he really didn't care for. He was happy to be himself without the fame.

I could never read Boroughs after a good meal or without a moderate dose of scopolomine. During my college years, I lived a precarious, impoverished existence and I was acquainted with my share of street characters with no deep sense of intimacy for damn sure; let me assure you. I knew of this junkie duo, Pierre and Randy, who were junk fiends. Pierre had no sense of hygiene or decorum. He was some wastrel from Montreal. I needed to use the head at Pierre and Randy's apartment. I saw Pierre in semi coma in the tub. I ignored him and urged my shy bladder to void. After I zipped up I noticed Pierre was this bloody mess with dark blots of toilet paper all over him and bloody dried rivers down various limbs of his body. It was as if he was doused all over with Hershey's chocolate syrup. I took it that he was doing the junkie equivalent of pin the tail on the donkey in his quest for the perfect injectable vein. Parts of him wreaked of rotted lymph fluid. Randy, though having the same hobby as Pierre had more lengths of viable veinology to puncture. Later on Randy, needed to couch surf to another locale, so I introduced him to my aged, poofta acquaintance, Dennis. It was late, and I was in between apartments. I fell asleep on Dennis' moldy couch across from his king sized bed. I heard a loud smacking, glugging sound and was roused to see Randy doing something randy with Dennis. Randy commanded me to close my eyes and go back to sleep, which I did in all haste. I was able to get some sleep for a few hours, but was awakened from my slumber by the smell of ass, cum load, and shit. I only saw a glimpse and slapped my hand over my eyes and pretended my nose only smelled roses. Anyhow please don't ask me to read Naked Lunch. I'll punch you if you do!
