I feel like the lore reason could be that gman in a different timeline chose to still force freeman into stasis but as a punishment send him far into the future where freeman is forced to live for all of eternity
My thought exactly. He pushed him so far into the future that theres nothing living on earth anymore (apart maybe from crows and some animals) and no reason to stay on earth. I would say even more scary than living with human beings and even the combine which at least show you, you aren't REALLY alone.
Amazing mod! A concept so simple of removing the NPCs has turned HL2 into an atmospheric almost horror-like experience. Great work on the footage too! My theory is this is some alternate "what if" timeline where G-Man decided not to go with Gordon against the Combine and in the end not only did humanity lose, but the G-Man was eliminated too, since he's not even there to give you a speech in the train at the beginning. With G-Man gone, Gordon was finally liberated from whatever stasis he was put in, only to find nothing is left. The Combine won.
My personal theory is that Gordon, at one point in Episode 3, finally falls asleep. He relives every place he's ever been to, except now there is no one. No rebels, no combine. And he is just forced to reflect on his entire journey up to that point.
Turns out, Freeman survived the blast. The creator of this mod just finished making an Episode 1 version and I just so happened to have finished and uploaded a playthrough of it.

maybe gman is subconsciously showing Freeman his journey here so when he gets there he knows what to do at all times
