Well 7 years later and you saved me hours. I tried both laptops with the Airport Extreme app and the scan would not find the Apple Extreme. I used my iPhone and "Bam" it was right there. Followed your steps and we were up and running, less than 10 mins.
Please help me! Now my airport create a new WiFi, but I want to extend my WiFi range, without create a separate line. I don’t know how to do it. Please 🙏🏻

Question? If I get an apartment and I call my internet provider and have them set up my AirPort Extreme to my Mac will they want me to use their router or is the AirPort Extreme better as the router?
Not sure if they would make you use their router, it would obviously depend on the ISP and what kind of router they had. But the Airport Extreme is a great piece of equipment that uses the most advanced WiFi protocol available (802.11ac) so it's doubtful that the ISP router would be any better. If you already have the Extreme I would use it instead of the ISP's router.
Steve Vestel Worst case scenario is if they insist on keeping their router on, you can always just use the AirPort Extreme anyway. Each router would have a different SSID so you could just connect to your AirPort network anyway.

So the Time Capsule is basically the same thing as an AirPort Extreme it just has a hard drive for backup? I'm getting ready to buy one of these

You need the modem to get internet into your home, then the Airport Extreme will turn your wired internet connection into a wireless network.

Every time I click “add to existing network” it then says “an unexpected error has occurred”...any help :(?
