1 read throwing and running if the 1st option not there. He at least went through progressions with the 9ers. Still he had some good deep throws, and still can't make the simple throws.
Also was staring down rec all game, so he made the db's job very easy this game. I'm just trying to understand what he's been doing while not playing. Very simple mistakes I saw, that a player 4 years in the nfl shouldn't be making regardless on if you weren't playing much.
@@Dj2knitroI've wondered that too tbh. He waited until his 3rd offseason to fix his throwing mechanics? Also heard somewhere that he doesn't like watching film which if true is really gonna hinder his growth mentally
Trey Lance pulled off the heist of the century against the 49ers. They invested three 1st round picks + a third and the cowboys invested a 4th. He was also paid roughly 30 million dollars… Highway robbery! Biggest draft bust of all time.
Perhaps, but I'd still take Jamarcus Russell in that spot. #1 overall pick - 3 seasons - 4k yards - 18 TD's - 23 INT's. 49'ers were nuts for what they gave up for him though
I think McCarthy hoped Lance would be his new Rodgers to Dak's Favre. This is his first offseason in the offense, so maybe he'll figure it out if he gets enough time.
5 interceptions against subs and backups, yikes! He has the outside physical traits but in SF he struggled with reading defenses, accuracy and efficiency. Drafted way too high for very little playing experience. He looks like a deer in headlights. 😢

Don't feel the need to apologise for calling out bad play, your video on Zak Wilson showed what happens when a QB gets into a good team that develops them on. This is exactly what we looked at with the Niners he is good when it's simple, as soon as he has to think or make a read he crumbles. I don't think he has any future in the NFL as a backup, he just cannot read the game.
He will get a lot more chances there are so many qb coaches who think they can fix anyone even if other teams couldn't and to many teams take free agents based on where they were drafted sad but true
Trey Lance is already in 'mid' season form. Meanwhile, Stick is like that broken microwave that you've been wanting to replace but once it hears that you plan to buy a new one, it starts working properly for a while, buying itself some time.
I only saw the highlights for this game but when you consider Trey's last full season of football he threw no interceptions... the learning process(inexperienced as he is) maybe needs at least one game like this. I mean, im a 49er fan and watched Brock throw 4 against the Ravens. Shit happens. Especially when you're young.
Hard to say...I'm a chargers fan and I'm liking what I'm seeing but the preseason is just so different and so much slower than the regular season. Also Trey played with a desperation to make plays and that ended up causing bad decisions, so although the defense made some great plays, I don't know if a real quarterback would present the same opportunities.
To all those who would say, “Lance is still young,” consider this. Brock Purdy is younger. Edit: I hate it but I’m beginning to believe the scouting report was completely inept. Or maybe the process has become inept. Either way Lance shouldn’t have been drafted so high.
He has not progressed, at all. He looks exactly like he did in 2021. You can't keep giving the guy chance after chance when you KNOW he isn't an NFL caliber QB, not as a starter or backup.
Great work as always man. He really has so few games, 5 total pre season games with two different teams in over 3 years with a major injury in between. The kid just needs reps, reps and more reps in game situations and some stability. He has the talent and tools to be a damn good QB but unfortunately he's just not going to find those reps in Dallas at this time and that's a shame. I still think he'll get a chance with someone and hopefully its a team with a good scheme and coordinator and I think he'll shine.
He has not progressed, at all. He looks exactly like he did in 2021. You can't keep giving the guy chance after chance when you KNOW he isn't an NFL caliber QB, not as a starter or backup.
Trey Lance has the physical talent but he needs far more experience to run an offense Lu,e this. I think he’d be more effective in an RPO offense with simpler reads.
I think Dallas is coaching Trey Lance. It's preseason. They seem to be giving him work to the outside. Maybe this is a weakness of his and they are trying to get him reps to the outside to learn better. You never learn from making the pass, you learn from a mistake
Last Chance? What are the three things that were said about Trey Lance before this pre-season? 1. He did not have that much experience. 2. He is not the most accurate QB and needs to improve his accuracy. 3. He needs more playing time. So, at this point in Trey's career, I as a long-time Cowboys fan since the mid-1960s am grading him on a curve?" During the Chargers game, the announcer stated that Trey's playing time for that pre-season was at least 1/3 of his total HS and College totals. Based on your breakdown, the first interception occurred due to a crafty veteran Safety KNOWING the play that was most likely coming, firing off the snap, and then the "rookie, non-experienced" QB throwing the ball. Of course, it did not help that Trey's ball placement was not ideal, which contributed to the interception. If Trey is acknowledged to have limited playing experience, then this interception is due more to Trey not recognizing this before the snap of the ball or at least not recognizing it when the ball is snapped. My question to all of you analysts, as I have seen and heard a lot from you, is do you think that Trey has the mental and work ethic make-up to work on his accuracy and learn how to read defenses? As you stated, if Trey knows where to go with the ball then his accuracy increases. I would think that this comment reinforces the prevailing opinion that Trey needs to play and or develop more. In my opinion, the five interceptions do not change my opinion of Trey as there are lots of QBs with more HS and College experiences than Trey that do not see the field "well". With experience, the expectation is that the QB sees the first read, and if not there, then looks for his second read or elsewhere and or run. The million-dollar question is whether or not Trey has the work ethic and or mental makeup to learn in the classroom, playing field (practice field), QB coach to improve his game? I am not a Dak hater. I think that Dak is a very good QB, however, given the QB positional inflation rate of paying by position versus talent, I do NOT think that the Cowboys should pay Dak $60MM per year. How many interceptions has Dak had in the playoff games? So, analysts want to "skewer" (for lack of a better word) Trey for the same types of mistakes that so-called seasoned QBs make. I see Rush and Trey as "bridge" QBs for the Cowboys 2025 season, BECAUSE right now the Cowboys, because of the FO stupidity, have no QB under contract for the 2025 season. My solution is to let Dak walk unless he agrees to a price tag of maybe, between $55-$57 MM per year with a trade clause. If Dak doesn't agree then I would try to sign Rush and Lance for a "team-friendly, competitive, prove-it" deal for at least one to two years. And then let Rush and Trey compete for the QB job in 2025, while at the same time looking at the QB draft class as well as other options.
Your breakdown of play 2 and 3 is exactly why you also couldn't make it in the NFL. Peripheral (backside) pressure on the optin read is exactly why you have to pull the ball. Sprint right option the ball is gone before the decoy corner route develops.
I'd say he should've stayed in college. But maybe he doesn't do well that season and goes in the very late rounds. Keep in mind even if this is the end of his NFL career, he has already made $35 million dollars, he can retire at age 25 and still live better than the vast majority of us ever could. He's done alright for himself.
@The313dash Don't care. Kaep won big playoff games, on the road and at home. Also had a better sb then Jimmy and Purdy. You just don't like black QBs. 323 yards 90 rushing yards.. quit hatin. Watched purdy throw 4 int with an Allstars team. Stop hatin

@@havu2236 His whole draft class was crap. 60% of QB's are busts. Doesnt matter as Brock Purdy saved their bacon. Plus they got a good looking rookie safety for that pick from Dallas.
lmao it pissed you off bc you see the flashes but you also see that he’s not reading the field well. The main thing is literally experience but nobody has time to be giving experience like that. I truly believe if he got that rookie year experience he would’ve been in a better spot. Hate to see it. Should go to another football league and try to bounce back.
I wonder who was the person(s) who convinced him that after only ONE year in college playing ball for the season, and one full year off before he gets drafted, that he was ready for the NFL. It's very clear he was not, and to this day I would still say he's not ready. Now granted whomever convinced him may have ended up making him as much money as he'll ever make, since that #3 over all pays a lot more than what he may have made in 2022 as only Pitt picked a QB in the first and that was pick 20, and the next one didn't drop until the 3rd round, but I still feel as a football player he absolutely just had to stay and play as the starter for one more year.. AT LEAST, based on what I see probably 2 more years.
That would have been two more years of tape demonstrating he can't read a defense instead of cashing in for the $36M he will make after this contract. No offense, but this is the dumbest argument ever. You ALWAYS take the cash.
@@darrenkrehoff5200 That's making the assumption that he couldn't learn. And sure if that's the case, then take the cash. Meanwhile, you got a guy his replacement who did spend 4 years playing football as a starter, he obviously learned considerably more, and come next year he's probably going to be the highest paid player ever (until the next QB contract after him comes up).
@@Mike__BPurdy played at a very high level in a real conference. Lance would have never played a snap in the Big 12. He could play for 100 years at North Dakota State and still not be able to develop a skill set that would have paid him more than what he already got paid in the NFL.
As an FCS player, Lance made the right decision if he was getting a first round evaluation. His options were to stay in FCS and make no improvements because he’s playing against subpar competition, transfer to an FBS team and hope to put up good numbers (and avoid injury) in his first year in a new offense so his draft stock doesn’t slide, or go straight to the NFL and start learning against high level talent. So from a developmental and financial standpoint, he made the right call. $30 million guaranteed as an FCS player is basically hitting the lottery.
Ok, so I have noticed something when some players or former players do coverage or give a take on other players. And that is that you can actually hear a genuine empathy from having to say that something isn’t good enough. The same from you here. There is no smirk or unlikable attitude when describing it. It is giving examples, not just saying ”he is bad” and not just piling on. Another player I get that same likeable approach from when critiquing is Jason Kelce. And during this season Travis Kelce and Mahomes when being bombarded with critique towards the WR play. They did not say it was great, but didn’t just pile on and blame one player for a result either. Same with Ryan Clarke, it is often clear that he doesn’t take pleasure in saying a player bombed in a game or over several games. I prefer that over the more Stephan A or Skip over dramatic speil.
Trey didnt help himself for sure. Trey hasnt played a full season of football in the nfl and is still a rookie when it comes to game play. People are trashing him prematurely. Not everybody is a Tom Brady or Brock Purdy. I see things in Lance that can be fixed over time. I was glad to see him take chances down field instead of just hitting check downs like backups do game mangers. Peyton struggled his rookie year with picks. Its to early to trash the man. He needs to be traded so he can play, he will never improve on the sidelines. Circumstances are a B.
Lance was over hyped coming out of college, the Niners rolled the dice and gave away valuable draft picks to move up and draft him in the first round. They then announced him as their starter even before training camp. He started the season and was inept until injuries sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Season two was no better and once again injuries ended his season. His third year and finally 100% he could not beat out Purdy and even orse he failed to beat out Sam Darnold as the backup. The Niners saw that they made a huge mistake and got rid of him to the unsuspecting Cowboys. Now the Cowboys have seen their mistake but what can they do at this point? Lance is never going to be a starting QB in the NFL and at this point he is life and death to be even on an active squad. He will join the ranks of Leaf, Russell, Wilson as the worat first round QB draft picks.

I’ve seen Trey with the Niners and he just doesn’t have what it takes to be a good quarterback, which was obvious from the get go. Brock is the opposite, great QB from his first game. Anyone who couldn’t see it was just not being objective.
Be careful Chase. Speaking the TRUTH like this will get you labeled a “Dak lover” who is just scared that Trey will take his job. 😂
someone who threw 36 tds last year is worried about someone who threw 5 int in a preseason game? yall dont even try anymore
What’s wrong with Dak having fans ? You guys need help stop the unnecessary hate or jealousy. Dak special you ain’t 😂😂😂
Lance is still visualizing the field as if he were a rookie. But he isn't. I don't know what he did in the off season, but it didn't help him.
Thanks for taking him off our hands Dallas
Trey Lance is just terrible.
I am so mad my 49ers wasted a draft pick on him.
Its amazing they qere able to get anything in return after what he showed.

There was a lot of good in this game from Lance. I still see great potential!
How on earth did this guy get drafted at all, let alone as a #1 pick? Someone must have been overdosing on drugs when they drafted him.
Things were weird during covid
The red flag should of been when he was offered scholarships from large universities to play a position other than QB, and he went to North Dakota State because he wanted to play QB.
He got picked because he earned his spot. Dak living his best life while your broke and will never approach his stature or financial success. Hurts doesn’t it. And I’m not a Cowboys fans just tired of the disrespect of the players. Using football to spew racist narratives.

And Shanahan had this guy starting for SF. Kyle’s lucky Brock Purdy was there to save his (and Lynch’s) job.
Are these problems fixable? I’ve seen him improve in some areas but he’s just so inconsistent. He probably needs to go to the UFL and get more playing time to be a viable starter. Do you think he can stay in the league as QB2 or QB3 based on everything you’ve seen up to this point?

His last chance with four regular season starts in San Francisco, shits crazy. Other QBs have gotten one or two full seasons to continually suck and this kid got 4 starts over two seasons then broke his ankle. Kid just needs to go somewhere and play and get reps
Looks like SF punked the Cowboys. They must be laughing their butts off
It's the cowboys. With their think tank, Lance will be QB1 after Dak leaves. Theyll try their best to not win a Superbowl
This was a Jerry Jones pick and Jerry never admits his mistakes, so he never learns from them, which is why he is the worst GM in the league.
He might not have the vision to see it before it happens. Perhaps he can learn it through experience but I don't know if he has the time for it
Trey Lance pulled off the heist of the century against the 49ers. They invested three 1st round picks + a third and the cowboys invested a 4th. He was also paid roughly 30 million dollars…
Highway robbery!
The 5 ints in a preseason stat is hella skewed imo since most the time it's multiple QB's playing throughout the game
He aint no Nathan Peterman
5 interceptions against subs and backups, yikes! He has the outside physical traits but in SF he struggled with reading defenses, accuracy and efficiency. Drafted way too high for very little playing experience. He looks like a deer in headlights. 😢
You just described dak every January, 😳

Play 1, I feel like the #2 shin was really the read
Like the coach is saying MORE PLAYING TIME IN GAME. It doesn’t have to be a whole season he just needs consecutive games.
id like to see what Andy Reid could do with this kid. as an eagles fan, ive seen reid take a college backup and get QUALITY starts out of him (A.J. Feeley) ....Andy did that on more than one occasion. kevin kolb, mike vick (vick was a project, make no mistake about it)
and people call me crazy, but mcnabb was overdrafted by about 3 rounds. reid turned him into a legit starter. not great but good. andy reid is a great qb coach. he was green bay qb coach under mike holmgren before the eagles hired him
Chase whats the best qb you ever played with, and do you think herbert is another Dan Marino career wise are Phillip Rivers as long as he plays for the chargers.
Atta boy Jerry. Definitely a no brainer here.
Chase sounds like he's trying to give Trey Lance excuses and building him up. He DOESN'T know how to play NFL. The 9ers got rid of him and Jerry just LOVES to stick with losers. Admitting you made a bad decision is not in Jerry's wheelhouse. Dak...
Come out of retirement and become my chargers back up again !! We need u bro
My name is Daniel and I’m a chargers fan I wanted your jersey so bad when you played for us
Now you see why niners took Purdy. Purdy ain’t too flashy but he makes the right plays and the right throws.
You should have seen how happy the 9ers players were when they went to Purdy as the official starter. They all knew he was miles ahead of Lance.
We love the breakdown @chasedaniel
He will get a lot more chances there are so many qb coaches who think they can fix anyone even if other teams couldn't and to many teams take free agents based on where they were drafted sad but true
Trey Lance is already in 'mid' season form. Meanwhile, Stick is like that broken microwave that you've been wanting to replace but once it hears that you plan to buy a new one, it starts working properly for a while, buying itself some time.
Jerry's ego will keep Lance on the 53
Knowing Jerry Jones, Trey Lance will get a contract extension any day now
I only saw the highlights for this game but when you consider Trey's last full season of football he threw no interceptions... the learning process(inexperienced as he is) maybe needs at least one game like this. I mean, im a 49er fan and watched Brock throw 4 against the Ravens. Shit happens. Especially when you're young.
How good will the chargers defense be this year ?? Seems like they were getting after it in that game
Its been 5 years since he played a full season of games. Id not put too much into this game.
It's year 4. Where's the progress? He looked like this last preseason.

Both the 9ers and Cowboys have a good scheme and coordinator. Lance is what he is. Terrible.

Or he’s just a fraud that only put up numbers in college because he was playing against terrible FCS competition.
Trey Lance has the physical talent but he needs far more experience to run an offense Lu,e this. I think he’d be more effective in an RPO offense with simpler reads.
I don’t know how can someone who couldn’t play and considered to be below average player while in the NFL can so be critical of other players.
Ever met a sports writer?
Edit: I understand the point your making though...
He's done alright for himself.

lmao it pissed you off bc you see the flashes but you also see that he’s not reading the field well. The main thing is literally experience but nobody has time to be giving experience like that. I truly believe if he got that rookie year experience he would’ve been in a better spot. Hate to see it. Should go to another football league and try to bounce back.
why nobody teaching him to read defenses, hitch, and make the right reads is sad he clearly has the talent
He is clearly trying to lean. He just doesn’t have the capability to learn and be a nfl qb
Purdy saved Shanahan's job from Lance destroying it. Cooper Rush is much better.
In another universe SF sticks with Mac Jones and Jones is productive, but not on Purdy level.
I'll bet he throws the best party in town, just like he did in the bay area.
