Side Gap Spark Plug modification and explanation. Is side gapping a performance hack?

- Is this video I am side gapping some plugs. This does A LOT for the performance of the engine.
The increased electrode exposure guides the angle of the flame front down towards the center of the combustion chamber promoting a faster, more complete and even burn thus increase power, performance and fuel mileage as well as reducing plug fouling.

Interesting! I never gave spark plug modification much thought before.
I dont think many do
Yes ,I do the same with all my plugs . Yeah the center electrode shrouds the spark ,and it also makes everything start a lot better, like small engines and cars. Thank you.
Hey man, I'm a new moped owner and new subscriber and just wanted to say I learn something from every one of your videos. I've recently acquired a 1984 Puch Maxi Sport LS2 with the 2HP ZA50 and i'm getting ready to freshen everything up. Your videos have already helped a ton, thanks for everything you're doing!
Thank you! I haven't done any ZA videos yet. but I have one on the back burner.
Dude, i am DEFINITELY gonna try this in my Stihl MS460 once im done porting it!!!! So simple, but makes so much more sense!!!
Great, did a specific search for side gapping and screw tube gave me nothing but garbage I didn't ask for this was the only one that showed up as a result of search criteria. Off to the races.
Great explanation, super concise and useful. Thanks for making the video!
Thank you!
Very interesting modification . Have to try it 👌.thanks
After watching this video I subscribed to your channel because you did such an awesome job explaining side gapping! I think I'll try it on my Banshee to see if it will start easier and foul less!
Yeah! Do it up! I bet it would help a banshee a lot. I remember the days of kicking and kicking. I had a basnshee back in 03/04
Many racers,, starting back in the 1960s or 50s ,, filed /cut the ground electrode to only over the center of the center electrode .. Many makers like Motorcraft Champion make and market them like that as Race Plugs ..Accel makes all of their plugs like that and with a C cut on the ground electrode .. I file the plug for my mower engine 22 hp Kholer , ,it helps for a faster start and a better running engine ...
I thought for sure I was the only one. My 19hp Kohler has a cut plug in it. It for sure starts easier
Ohh that's awesome! I didn't even think about it for lawn stuff!
@@Corn-ped Too much metal over the center electrode seems to block the fuel vapor a bit I assume especially if it is square placed over the piston and filing it back allows the spark to ignite the vapor just a wee bit faster on a cold start and possibly a more complete burn cycle with less emissions.
Cool explication, thank you
Thanks for watching
Very interesting thanks
Good clip.
Ether your trick did it or the exchange of my ignition coil ^^^^ But my chainsaw now cuts realy good.
Rad. Good hear
I've had plugs that the diode just broke loose after few years. I should have changed sooner but still the metal is all that kept it from bouncing around cylinder. I still am gonna try this but for guys that choose to do it stay on top of replacing plugs cause it would suck to drop one in there over such small money.
👍👍
Every day is a school day👍🏴
Haha yes it it!
I need to try this in my 65hp 2 stroke boat motor.
Yeah Roy! Do it up! Lateral Gas port the piston too!
I race a modified 75 corolla with a 2tc with uprgraded coils and wires that are grounded and an msd ignition box, distributer is stock. Would side gapping and opening the gap to .040 be any better than leaving it alone with the .032 gap?
How do you feel about surface gap plugs, like bu8h? Seems like it would have a similar effect of not blocking the spark
I like those but I have never had as good of results with them. Also I have never had them run well on points. With the side gapped plug I get good results on points & CDI.
I captured - a float area - in the EFI || throttle - by port ops!
I’ve done this before on race engines. Not sure if it really helped, but I felt like Smokey Yunick.
love this comment lol
Good old smokey... I remember his adiabatic dodge omni in the 80s.. did the Kessel run in 12 parsecs
Maybe the sparkplug company does it to protect the tip of the from the constant spark on the edge. If an arc burns/oxidized a spot on the normal one it can go to 40 other places that are equal distance nearby. If the arc on the side gap plug burns/oxidizes it has to go even farther pass the arc burn/oxide to get good electric contact. Or maybe its simply planed obsolescence can't replace a perfectly good sparkplug.
My gapped plugs lasts as long as the moped engine so idk. Seriously I never change my plugs.
@@Corn-ped well yeah i totally get that. Its definitely something I want to try.. the company probably engineering it this way for saving their own ass not performance. If they offer these sidegap plugs and then Bubba the cousin fucker saw these and put high-performance side gap plugs in his stock indy600 and then breaks down his snowmobile out on the trail because he never checked on his high-performance plugs and gets alchohol withdrawals and turns into an ice man. It could be a problem for the sparkplug company. And they don't want to sully their reputation on a new product that people are using incorrectly.
But yeah on a moped you probably are gonna toast your piston or bearing or rings or who knows what else before therse modified plug get oxidized up.... well maybe not you! These two cycle modifications can quickly turn into a ticking time bomb situation when people start "trying new things" both intentionally or un.
I've had plugs that after a few years the diode broke loose. Didn't even notice it but started having weird issues so I cleaned it really good and the carbon that was just holding it barely let loose and the metal stopped it. This was 2 stroke but man was so glad it didn't fall into cylinder.
Awesome info man !
Thank you!
hey man, so I`m just curious... so for example if you have a small 1.6 inline 4 cylinder and daily drive it. Would side gaping the plugs be a better option for fuel economy and drive ability??
I dont think it would do much for a eco 4T small engine. This is more for modified engines. I think they would wear out faster and you would end up having to replace them more often and loose money that way.
Dont you clean the plug after you mod it? Seems like ther would be lots of metal residue that could potentially kill your engine
Yeah I use an air compressor to blow it out! Good catch. I didnt even think to show that.
Just use an Outboard Engine Plug , the early ones had No Center Electrode !!
Can you do this with a modern engine? I may try this on my snow blower first to see what happens.
Yes totally! It would help a snowblower start easily and foul plugs less.
This will speed up its Lifespan wouldn't it since the center electrode is more exposed? Just wondering cause that's my only negative thought but very interesting...
yea it will. but I dont think it speeds it up enough to be a negative. I still get years out of my plugs.
You dont have the edge of the ground strap to the center of the electrode you have it cut to the edge of the electrode so what is best center or the way you have it?
When the edge is at the corner, it make the spark open to the combustion chamber.
I want to try this on my lawn tractor. Do you gap it to the same spec as normal after modifying the plug? Thanks.
Yea I still gap it the same. But now the gap is more diagonal than hidden.
@@Corn-ped hey thanks again. I side gapped my plugs this evening and the mower started and ran smoothly. Looking forward to putting it to the test this weekend.
@@JosephSastreShowsYou awesome! Let me know how it goes!
Will the plugs get fouled easier if it’s fuel injected?
no, not at all. I find that my side gapped plugs almost never foul.
given that your carb has the correct gas/air ratio, will side-gapped SPs increase the fuel consumption?
It will not increase fuel consumption.
@@Corn-ped ????
@@Corn-ped hi good day! I didn't fully understand this answer can you explain better please if you don't mind
@@nolydpot8967 sorry, it will not increase fuel consumption
Some 2 stroke Marine engines don't have the top part of the electrode the spark just jumps down the bore
They also so somthing similar with top fuel cars.
maybe better performance, but the electrode will wear away at a single point instead of evenly across the whole surface leading to quicker gap growth. why not just go with a fine point iridium for the same effect but years longer life?
Iridium don't last long in 2ts so replacing a cheap copper plug is easy and cheap.
Also Iridium runs colder vs copper due to it's lower conductivity. Copper is just a better plug. To address the gaping issue just re gap them after a while. They last just as long either way but need to be re gaped. It's kinda moot since there is very little difference between .40, and .50 performance wise. As long as the spark jumps the gap it's all the same combustion wise.@@Corn-ped
The spark plig companies don't do this because they wear out fast.
How would you read the timing then?
What timing? ignition timing?
yes, like reading how far down the ground strap it is hot/burnt.
@@Corn-ped
0:20 False, they are not longer lasting, and very much the opposite which is why spark plug companies don't do it on any other than a few racing plug options.
Would this work in E3 plugs?
I would say no. but it looks like the E3 plug is pretty similar. . .
So there's no cons ?!?!
None that I know of. It might wear out a little faster? But my plugs on 2ts last at least a couple years
@Corn-ped man I guess I'll have to do this to the ol square body lol
You won't see much difference on that small engine and power. It's used for heavy tuned/race engines with nos or a turbo or supercharger. Just go with a lower number if you want a warmer plug.
Isn't a 10 HP, 60cc 2tengine with an expansion chamber a 'high performance engine with a supercharger' ?
@@motzingg No they are using it in Nascar racing not on a 10 hp engine.
@@motzingg 4stroke people don't understand what performance and tuning truly is. They replace it with displacment!
Us taking mopeds to 10hp from 1 or 2, is like taking a 2J and getting 1500 HP. This does have benefits
@@GarrettH.6 prove it
0.4mm gap? That's . 016". Huh?
If you have angle plug heads you literally just did nothing but ruin your plugs and cause the spark to be redirected from the center of the combustion chamber. Even straight plug heads has the chambers nowadays angled so this is ineffective.
I'm working on vintage 2t mopeds. They almost all have centered plugs.
Wow, that's awesome info. I can't wait to try it
Please do a video about how to set up, and in depth explanation of squish !!! Please!!!
It's soooooo much better literally NO MANUFACTURER makes these even tho it would cost less 😂😂😂😂😂
