Restoring and Converting an Austro Hungarian M17 Helmet to a German WW2 Wehrmacht Helmet!

- Hello my friends!
In this video we will be restoring a Austro Hungarian M17 Helmet, to a German WW2 Transitional Wehrmacht helmet!
I bought this helmet for a good price, and the condition is perfect for a restoration!
After WW1, the Germans had a shortage on helmets, so they decided to use the WW1 helmets like the M16, M17 and M18. ( Including the Austro Hungarian M17 )
These helmets were used from the beginning, until the end of World War 2.
Some History about the M17 helmet:
Austria-Hungary purchased about 416,000 German helmets from November 1916 until the end of the war and also began its own licensed production starting in May 1917.
The Austrian M17 helmet was similar to the German M16, but was colored golden-brown (known as Isonzo-braun), had a cloth chinstrap and had the chinstrap rivet located higher up on the steel shell. From May 1917 till the end of World War I 534,013 were produced
I hope you enjoy this video! :)

The one dislike is from the person who originally painted the helmet.
@@oddbjrneriksen468 There's not really anything wrong with the restoration.. It's a helmet, not a classic car. I will use this helmet for reenacting, and like I explained in the video, I like it of the other paint is still underneath it, just like the Germans painted over the old layers of paint. Kind of you to leave a Dislike. 👎
😂
@@History-Secrets I think it’s good :)
@@oddbjrneriksen468 Your methods might be good, but I can assure you that the method I use works fine too. Rust will not come back, there wasn't even much of it, only some surface rust. There are a lot of layers of paint over it, the steel gets no oxygen, so it won't rust further. It's fine. I treat relics that I have to preserve differently of course.
It really depends on how old and rare that helmet is
to everyone who dislikes this guys video's for him showing the swastika and saying that the German decals are beautiful he doesn't mean it by him supporting the Nazi's, he means it historically. and all nick wants to share with us is his finds, creations and tutorials. don't forget he is unfolding history for us, he doesn't have to but he does so respect this guy have a blessed day nick!
Agreed
Agreed !!!!
Gotta be a communist, non European invader or hooked nose to hate NS in the 21st century. Degenerate stuff.
Agreed
My grandads dad was a Beaufort flight sergeant in ww2
He crashed over Ireland and currently the sight is being dug.
Thanks for keeping history alive
I recently got into reenacting and looking for a group
Wow, that's some really interesting family history! I hope they keep you updated on the finds!! Awesome, have fun reenacting, it's a great hobby!
Good job that he was German but still this video doesn’t make sense a Austrian Hungarian helmet turning into a German helmet those are two different countries.
@@History-Secrets yeah updates we hope are coming!!
@@wakeringlivinghistorygroup8294 same
@@History-Secrets i also want do do reenacting but im Just 13

My great grandfather served in the Austrian Army and fought the Italians.
Two of my great great grandfathers died in ww2 fighting for Hungary. One in Italy and one in Poland
My great great grandfather fought against the Russians in the Austro-Hungarian army. My great grandfather died in 1941 also fighting the Russians in the Wehrmacht
Very nice you can make such a good job restoring the old helmet. Big respect
Thanks!! :)
Amazing that a Austro-Hungarian soldier wore this! In my school we have a Polish teacher who’s great grandfather fought on their side against the Russians and I am pretty sure he survived the war, maybe it’s his helmet? Who knows history can hold many things, mysterious, facts and struggle. Thanks Nick for the videos great job as always!
Polish teacher?
This channel was the reason I now collect
Awesome!! ✌️
@@History-Secrets yeah I spent 200$dollars on a m1 pit paratrooper with pacific theater cloth cover and a m1912 pistol belt

@@aaatlas840 yea. My great grandfather fought for Hungary and the germans in ww2 and I always say he may have been on the wrong side but at least he was fightin the commies😁.
@@themzeros5909 U don’t know any history, is that correct?
@@antonjensen1088 what do you mean?
last time i was this early, Germany was still militarizing the Rhine
I think I arrived when Germany was invading Poland with Russia
Rare occasion where nick does not get injured while filming
Man your hint in the collection tour video gave this one away
It only feels like yesterday when you first mentioned a restoration in a game of Phasmophobia doesn’t it?

Thank you!!
Great! I love the restoration videos
Great job!
Looks good dude
One of my favourite Helmets of all time, good video:)
Even before you restoured it think it was strangely beautifull a testiment to its strength, its over a 100 years old and who knows where it was before you got it, who knows what battles it was in or where it was at the end of the war, at some point its liner was lost, someone repainted it, it told this incredible story of how time will take its toll and now you brought it back to its glory days

awesome helmet, good job on the restoring
I love the top of that stool you paint on being just an assortment of green/grey, and the blue from your last restoration.
Even your stool has history.
Terrific job👍🙂
I‘m getting into Reenacting and collecting, I was the weirdo in my class that knew everything about ww2 but now that I want to buy memorabilia, I think I‘m the ultimative HISTORYBUFF 😂
You're not the only one People say that I'am weird or Nazi because I know a lot of WW1 and WW2 history and equipment I collect items for 4 years and I will collect until my dead . I can 't live without it .
I love watching your videos. I'm an old guy now, so I've had to stop reenacting due to health reasons, but I truly enjoy watching the younger guys who keep history alive. Please keep it up. One request: When you do these restoration films, please be sure to tell us where you buy your supplies. Especially those absolutely LOVELY decal sets. I have a really pristine M40 that I'm preparing to restore - again - and this time I'd like to use a more accurate paint. No problem there, but almost ALL of the reproduction decals that I find are simply not up to the standards seen in the ones that you've been using. Who is the source for these? Thanks again for a really interesting channel.
No way this just made my day
yeah
