When I was a teenager in Illinois , we had the 17 year cycle show up. Man, what a mess they were. I moved away from Illinois, so I don't know when they came the next time. Once was good enough for me.
I live DIRECTLY on the other side of the river from one of these circles on the map. Do we think there are none of these coming out on the other side of the river? About 20 maybe 21 years ago there were so many cicadas here you couldn't make it from the car to the house in the evening without getting them flying into your hair. I haven't see that since. It wasn't one of these historic outbreakings but it was huge none the less.
I remember when I was little, Indiana had a summer of cicadas… my brother and I would collect them in large ice cream buckets. Just dip our hands in the buckets and scoop them up. We were heathens. 😂 it was a very loud summer.
I wonder since they cane out of the ground at the same time do the two broods interbreed with each other. And if this changes how many years the offspring from mixing the two broods spend underground before emerging. I think usually every year there is a smaller brood because usually we see them once a year i think.
I remember the last time they came out…it was sooo loud we couldn’t enjoy our camping trips … and this lady follows them for family vacation? To each their own lol.
The cicadas saved the lives of thousands of Iroquois (Native Americans ) generations ago. When George Washington ordered them starved to death, the cicadas came out from underground just in time for the natives to use them as a food source to save their lives. Many elders still eat them as a tradition to this day. It’s more to remember the sacrifice they made to save their lives. But most younger natives won’t even try them. Of the natives that do eat them, some cook them first and make a sandwich with them, but many eat them without cooking them. On a side note, if you are going to eat cicadas, remember that if you’re allergic to shellfish, you will also be allergic to cicadas as all other insects. If u have an allergy to shellfish, you’re most likely allergic to the protein in it called tropomyocin, and it’s in insets as well. So steer clear of not just shellfish and insects, but all of that new cricket flour and foods containing it. It’s already in many breads and bread products in fast food stores and other products you may not know about.
@@anntunaley9974 Now I wonder how they taste pan fried with some salt. Since you seem to know your cicadas, is there a danger to contract parasites when eating them raw?
In S.Texas we have them every year. Indians used to fry them and eat them--I've heard they are like potato chips. Also, don't accidentally put your hand on them in the dark!
I was in Pennsylvania one year and there were so many that shoulders of the interstate were covered about 3 inches deep with the cicadas that had been hit by cars and trucks
When they crawl out of the ground, they latch themselves onto the sides of trees, then crawl out of their shells and the shells stick to the trees (and many fall on the ground - you will see an entire ring of shells around trees). Google what's inside the brackets: [cicada shell on tree]. If you're lucky you'll see one in the process of crawling out. They come out looking kind of pallid but then gain color shortly thereafter.

A bit silly to call it a cicada invasion, as the larvae have been living underground for so long… it’s not as if we’re talking about species that can quickly become invasive, what with 13 or 17 years underground. Those insects’ ancestors have probably been in Illinois longer than humans… any humans whatsoever.
1, 13, or 17 years, depending upon species. Adult life is only a few days. Most of lifetime is spent underground as nymphs feeding on tree fluids from roots.
I would just let them stay in the yard the shells let that get back into the soil as a fertilizer it's good for the dirt no sense of trying to clean that up kind of fertilizer compost your yard make you grass nice and green😎 it'll probably be gone in like 2 weeks be back in the dirt in no time.
