  • This video is aimed at students studying Unit 3 and 4 of VCE Further Mathematics. This video is part of a series of videos covering the Geometry and Measurement module.
In this video, we begin to look at spherical geometry in the context of the Earth. We introduce the grid system of latitude and longitude that we use to locate points on the surface of the earth, this includes:
🔸 The equator and the prime meridian as the ‘axes’ of the earth
🔸 How meridians of longitude are measured
🔸 How parallels of latitude are measured
🔸 Locating points on the earth’s surface
🔸 Calculating the angle subtended at the centre of the Earth by two cities located on the same meridian of longitude, or on the same parallel of latitude.
My class uses the Cambridge Senior Mathematics textbook for Units 3 and 4 Further Mathematics for the Australian Curriculum / VCE. The content in this video is covered in Chapter 19 of this textbook.
Throughout the video I make use of the TI Nspire CAS CX II handheld.
