- Best show I've seen in a while. I had read most of the book but I did not expect it to hit from so many angles.
While I was making this I read Matt Bomer's Newsweek interview from last month www.newsweek.com/2023/12/08/m...
And what he said there was what I'd been putting into this video:
"Whereas Hawk, it was so interesting, when you're playing a character, you're always looking for the shadow of the character, the part they hide. He sort of leads with the part that most characters hide. And the hidden parts of him are really the more loving parts."
And another quote worth mentioning, as I had so many moments during this show where I just couldn't believe this show was made:
"But in a show like Fellow Travelers, I feel like it's just kind of the best of all worlds and doesn't happen very often in a career-once if you're lucky. So I'm very thankful."

"You were my great consuming Love" that hurt me so deep inside when Tim said it all he wanted was to be with Hawkins 😢.
it is for tim, an adolescent thing for us . He knows jack a bout squatt and he's all out. Soon enough i told soomeone "you may be the love of my life, but not the man of my life". Crazy in love as hormoned deranged girls can be, plus I loved him, so many things about him were "special". Like him and his terminally handicapped sister. a Joke from God testing Job, that one..Of 6 children, only one made it out okay after their mother's death in 98 (?) so far.

I really like how you put the "I have you" quote in between Tim's finale confession. That's the hope I hold on to. That he knew Hawk loved him just as much, he just wasn't able to get over the idea what his life "should" look like. Which of course is still very painful, but I get comfort from the possibility that Tim knew he was Hawk's great, consuming love too - he was just too inhibited to confess it.
The finale made me bawl so much so sad and touching at same time and this edit sure depicts those feelings I had for these two

#FellowTravelers was so emotional from beginning to end. I didn't want to let Hank & Tim go. It ended the way I had thought; one of them would pass and the other would mourn his death. Hank admitting to his daughter what he couldn't admit to his former wife or himself "He was the man I loved" tugged at the heartstrings. The Aids quilt brought back memories of that terrible time. Poignant.
The quilt is a Tim's rememberance of one who was such a bastard that he helped create this mess, and still was a good guy. lost all his life, trying to fit when he never could. just a nobody. that's the part i loved. This patchwork is life, more tthan death.
To find a love like this is so rare but there was so much keeping them apart and still they couldn't stay away.
While watching the last 20 minutes of this episode 8, I burst in tears
I love this show and their love story despite all the heartbreak, heartaches and pain they went through (mostly because Hawk broke Tim’s heart) and how time was above everything else their greatest enemy. Their love for each other remained ever strong throughout it all. Or rather, for Tim, he confessed his love for Hawk in the beginning and then at the end -
*You were my great, consuming love…*
Hearing that brought so many feelings to me; Hawk broke up with Tim and married Lucy for his own safety and survival, but Tim never got over or stopped loving him. Hawk never said he loved Tim or rather that
*He wasn’t my friend. He was the man I loved*
To finally hear Hawk say it was heartwarming, but equally heartbreaking that he said it over Tim’s memorial when he was no longer around to hear him say it. Still he always knew that deep down Hawk loved him. Hawk knew it too.

Wow, this is absolutely beautiful and I’m so glad you made an edit of them with this song particularly, because it holds a really special place in my heart..and so do these characters and this show now too. So it’s actually quite perfect. 🥹❤️ this show has been a gift to the world in my opinion but also an absolute rollercoaster and test to my emotions. Episode 8 really did something to me Im not sure I can describe, it kind of felt like I felt all the emotions a human can feel, at once by the end of it and I was absolutely sobbing. I can’t remember something ever making me feel this way. It was beautiful but also just so, so devastating. But with all of it I am so incredibly glad this series has found its way to me and these characters along with it. Hawk & Tim are going to stay with me now. My love and grief for them and all the people this show has been made for, is not gonna be forgotten. The cast and crew and everyone involved couldn’t have done a better job portraying this amazing story the way they did. Makes me thankful to be on this earth with great creatives and people who care that much. Beyond measure
Thank you so much! I feel exactly the same way about this show. I had some expectations but I did not expect the full rollercoaster of emotions from the beginning until the end. And just to know that it's not given that this type of a story would get to be told without people working hard to push it to be created. It is so special.

I haven’t been ok since I finished this series. It was just so amazing. I really felt for the characters, and also in the context of the AIDS crisis, it just made everything so real. I love how the sex scenes in this show were somehow also adding to the depth of their relationship, whereas in the majority of shows that I’ve watched before, sex scenes are just some kind of attention bait devoid of meaning. When they showed the memorial quilt I could not stop crying. The history of the LGBTQ+ community will never fail to destroy my soul and inspire the hell out of me.

I loved it, I cried, .... It was the series I liked the most to date. Love, politics, racial prejudice, homophobia, .......... The last chapter of the season was emotional. I cried with Hawk.

Am I the only one who really disliked Hawkins? He was afwul to Tim and to his wife. It was really until episode 7, where he ratted out Tim for being gay in order not to be 'closer' to him and be colleagues. Imagine that? How is that love. Urgh. I feel so sad for Tim, but I kinda cheered when Hawk's Wife left him. Imagine living a life in which you can are always, and never more, than second place. Idk. Couldn't get too much into the hawk-tim extensiveness of love because of how much of a red fleg Hawk is, never really helping, supporting,... Tim... atleas until the very last moment when he has a 'change-of-heart', AND EVEN THEN: when his wife is about to leave him, he is all too ready to leave Tim when saying "what do you want? I can leave right now! I'll take the next plane!". So even in Tims' last moments, Hawk still chose himself and his perfect life. Only when being forced by his wife, he finally "accepts" his love for Tim, c'mon! (haha sorry! I know its not that deep hahaha)
I get that! I think Hawk was written as a very nuanced character. Lots of shades of grey. I think Hawk could never quite accept himself and his sexuality and carried around a lot of self-hate which really just made a mess of everything and everyone around him. But let's also remember that Hawk's self hatred was a product of that time.

If you want to get a fuller sense of the horrific situation for gay men and lesbians in government during the 1950s and beyond, I highly recommend Robert Kirchick's 2022 book "Secret City." It also shows how much real history this superb series draws on, for both the historical characters and the fictional ones.
Oh, there are plenty of people who feel that way it seems. I personally completely disagree: while of course a lot of the choices Hawk makes are painful and frustrating, I 100% see that they come from deep shame he's been made to feel and his justified lack of faith that there could be a world where he and Tim could have a safe life together.
SO much of the show - not even in subtext but in just plain text - flat out shows us that Hawk loves Tim every bit as deeply as Tim loves him. So why did he betray him like he did? Because he was getting ready to start a family, and realized that as long as Tim was around he would only ever choose him. It was just an inevitability. And again, baring in mind the very real and terrifying risk that would be for them to have a life together, and the fact that he was having to choose between hurting Tim and hurting Lucy and his newborn child... yes, he imploded what he had with Tim in the hopes, presumably, that they would both then be able to move on. It just didn't work, because neither of them could quit each other. I've seen so many people suggest that Hawk was "leading Tim on" or "pulling him back in" and such, and I'm like... yeah, that's not because he's a predator, it's because he loves him and Tim is literally the only person in his life who knows how to break through the walls he puts up! It's a cycle of him trying to push him away so he can go down the path of least resistance in life, and then consistently not being able to hold to that because all he really wants is to be with him. Just because a relationship is unhealthy doesn't mean there has a be a horrible person involved.
As for his offering to leave with Lucy from San Francisco... it's complicated. As much as he always knew, and Lucy and Tim both always knew, that it was Tim he wanted to be with, he and Lucy had still built a life together over 30+ years - of course it wasn't just going to be something where he was going to be like "cool, bye, see ya!", you know? I don't think he actually wanted to go, but he was just trying to hang onto anything that could keep the life he knew and that had felt safe from imploding. And Lucy, to her credit, knew full well that he needed to stay and pushed him to do so.

I am sorry but Hawk didn’t deserve Skippy. Skippy was so pure, Hawk loved him in a way he knew how but was kinda as*ole to him too. My empathy goes for Skippy, he was the sweetest, boldest, most authentic and strongest character of all.
