+WiseHufflepuff If Emily is in it, then you know its funny af.
"Is a coupon code! Yur wulgum"
But... I like cat's... I got a orange cat called ''stoffer'' danish for drugs...
C300 Is definitely a dream camera, and what lav mic do you guys use? :D
I use the RodeLink. Great quality and lower cost than most at its level.
do the hard drive recovery from mcjuggeridiot
+Film Riot Thanks :D
ɷɷɷ I Have Watchedd Thiss Movie Leakedddd Versionnnn Hereeee : - t.co/SjZpZXw5gt
Hey guys! Watching this in 2018 for some reason, but it would be awesome if you guys could do a 2018 S35 camera comparison and thoughts video? Lots of loves!
Thanks for the shootout sir. Loved the video even with the cat comment :) I bet Canon paid you to say that 😉
+Philip Bloom OMG its Philip Bloom!!!!!!!
Philip Bloom this is a precious moment in a comment section lol which do you choose Phillip the c300 or fs7 for LOWLIGHT ?
Philip Bloom I remember when I bought my fs700 off of your review of the "Cannon" as you called it !! LOL
What the fuck is wrong with you, why are you telling someone who commented something innocently a year ago to shut up, you must have some serious behavioural issues
@@William.scarth did you read his comment....he did not say shutup.
Another amazing comparison. I'd probably go with the FS7, C300 = double the price but not double the quality!
+ChadWithaJ The C300 is aimed at rental market. The FS7 is aimed for owner-operators. Makes economical sense to buy the FS7.
Scott Tastet well put!
Even though Ryan owns a C300 Mk II now.
Nobody likes cats. Nobody. SO TRUE!
You wish.
+Garrett Lyon *whispers* Psst, Hey, do you realize that you cant say this here? Are you crazy??? Do you eaven kn... Do you eaven know where we are? The internet. You cant hate cats here. They are watching us, everyone. If you say anything, ANYTHING against cats they will find you. I cant take this anymore, why cats? Why cats? Why not puppies?! I want puppies!! But the internet chose cats. I cant take it anymore, i will just shoot myself and it will be over soon, then i can watch puppies without others judging, i could hate cats without getting punished, I will do it, I Will Do It. I WILL DO *Bang*... *Silence*.
+Garrett Lyon i have a cat ;(
+Tava Kessler Ryan Dosent Have a Cat ;(
I like trains (^^,)
That AD WAS Awesome!
Love the Spielberg shirt!
If this made your hand tired, try using our Flex 4k handheld for more than 30sec.... LOL. it's only about 20lbs.
What's about the Blackmagic Ursa or the Ursa mini? Aren't they an option for you?
yaaaaasss
+3D escape The Ursa is super impractical and I dont think the mini is out yet.
I was thinking the same thing. Though it's not out yet but would love to see Film Riot doing a review on it. It's quite a hyped camera so i'm curious if it lives up to it.
oooo, I most definitely agree. I sure hope black magic can stop delaying release dates. I would love a good review aswell.
+3D escape The low light on it is so abysmal, I'd say it's only great as a camera in a studio/controlled setting.
Ryan,
We use the Fs7 and C300 MK2 at the house I work at. We cross shoot them on interviews and love both and can match them pretty seamlessly in post with little to no time. While I prefer the C300 in some scenarios, the Fs7 is an amazing match for the cost. The biggest gap I've seen is in low light but even then the Fs7 still holds its own.
Do you consider looking into a Blackmagic Design URSA Mini 4.6K?
+Andrei Sorescu !!
I read that QC on the Ursa was inconsistent and some people got some lemons that were not unreliable. But the good cameras functioned well.
Black magic cameras are garbage
do an episode about on-set etiquette for indie filmmakers. I'm doing my first major film shoot next month, and that would be really helpful.
We've been wanting to do that for a while. Great idea.
That bit at 03:16 looks like you've had too much coffee for the insert cause it's so shaky but thought 'aah fuck it, that'll do!' haha
People that come from ENG camcorder backrounds love the switches. The layout is what we've been using for years on our broadcast cameras. Obviously you're reviewing this for a cinimatic shooting style, but this camera is a dual market camera. Run and gun dual white balance settings is fantastic for when your going between shade and sunlight back and forth, and these switches are great for going back and forth, you get used to them, and don't even have to look at them to use them.
love the fs7, great review.
Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6K though!
So, now that Star Wars is out when can we expect Intercept? :p
+VanDoornAV cheeky bugger! :D
Yes, thats a good question RYAN???
+VanDoornAV It'll come shortly after Star Wars....
Episode 8
+toahordika6 lol
Rip
having tried both, hands down the Canon C300 MKII. The Sony FS7 just lacked on some key features for me. My company ended up getting a Zacuto rig for the C300.
I've had the FS7 for half a year now and used it on several different projects, commercials, docustuff and news. I've been very happy and could not imagine going for the C300 Mark II. The FS7 is a camera that makes me want to shoot.
how is the autofocus
This was the best advertisement for domain.com I've seen this year. Good job!
Something with your compression is done funky on this video. Look at Ryan's shirt! It's killing me! But a good video none the less.
You could use the custom matrix and get a less flat and noisy image with a different profile. You compared 2 very different profiles so it makes sense you are seeing noise into what would normally be black (even in the c300) . There is very little differences in quality, huge difference in price.
Did you know you spelt lucky luck on your secret Santa page? Apart from that an excellent video which was enjoyable to watch.
After watching a lot of old episodes, returning to this one made me realise just how much better the audio in the videos today is. Damn that mic tho!
This Channel is Google for moviemaking gear and Logistics Thanks Filmriot for all the FREE INFORMATION / SUBSCRIBED !
Soo, are you going with the C300 then?
Also, what about the URSA mini? It's half the price of the Fs7...
I saw a lot of green spillage in this video, best way to resolve that is more separation from you and the green screen....I think the best camera you have is the RCA sitting on your desk! But then again, I'm very fond to vintage gear! :)
Why not wait for the new Blackmagic Ursa Mini camera with the 4.7k sensor? seems to me the Ursa is very high quality and I'm thinking about getting the 4K sensor one myself
LOL that is by far, the best ad I've ever seen on youtube. You guys are brilliant!
Hey Ry-Berry,
How you doin baby? I was just wondering, what camera would you recommend for travel video. Personally, I go hiking, camping, and adventuring all the time and would like to be able to shoot it way better.
Thanks,
Paul
P.S. Your show helps me so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please, try Ursa mini!
Would you consider a red raven of a red scarlet - w?
to set the white balance you need to be on either A or B the press the white balance button above the switch while taking a balance of a white card or piece of paper, this is very similar to how Sony's ENG style cameras are laid out
Since the C300 II just went down to $10k, the price difference between the gen 2 versions of each camera seems to only be about $1000 now.
Honestly, that was one of the funniest ads I have ever seen UA-camrs do. For me it is up there with the Fractal Design ads that tech UA-camrs make.
If you have a coin you can use that for the screws, they're not recessed for this reason. I've even used outlet prongs to adjust those type of screws when I was desperate. You didn't mention how cheap the plastic feels, just how the way the monitor feels like it's not that secure.
Very true. I forgot to talk about that. You can feel the difference between the two cams.
I've done a lot of work on the C300 and I own the FS7 so i think he is correct. The only thing i would say is being that he's more of a Canon guy he's much more likely to feel comfortable with Canons workflow. i like Sony workflow because i've had mostly sony's and i've study them a lot. Really, I like Sony and Canon workflow because i've studied them extensively in real life application and books and courses. So i'm comfortable with either. After a lot of research i just couldn't justify paying 8,000 to 9,000 more for the Canon. It just didn't add up but its a great!!! Camera and the features that Canon offer thats superior over Sony didn't hold that value for the difference of the Quality i would have to pay financially, especially when Sony also has superior features over the Canon that in the end has the ability to give me maybe an overall better end result. but again i love them both and there's no perfect Camera.
I've used Sony and Canon my whole career as well. Those are the two brands I've used most. I'm not locked to any brand really, I use RED a lot and Panasonic every now and then.
Agreed on no perfect camera. It all depends on the individual.
That new Red is nice!!!
Great episode! I shared it. Like many other comments I'm interested in these vs the Mini Ursa 4.6k
I just shot a short film on the fs7 for the first time after working with the a7s for some projects now and I loved it. I used to use canon DSLRs to shoot on but upgrading to something better becomes really expensive really quickly so I am personally moving over to sony right now.
that being said I'd love to get my hands on a C300 mk II to play around with it for a little bit and see how I like it.
I own a FS7 and completely agree with you guys, however I do believe that with future firmware releases a lot of the menu options can be corrected. I Really like my FS7 but It does have some very apparent problems.
What are they I really wanna get one
Why not Blackmagic?
I've owned the FS7 since April and used a C300 in February (Mark I of course) I agree with the colour science 100% but after getting used to the menu and functions on the side of the FS7 I honestly can't justify spending nearly $10k more for the C300 Mk II because of a couple things image wise that outweigh the FS7.
Kinda feel like this argument is like the whole Apple vs PC, each to their own preference, great video as always!
Hey Ry, cool shirt! This comparison is pretty cool and all, but I've been super interested in what the Kinemini 4k can do, as well as the Blackmagic Ursa Mini. It could be possible these cameras could stand up to the c300 and at a way cheaper price than even the Fs7!
AWESOME Spielberg shirt!
My under-rated Samsung NX1 does better 4k than these two expensive cameras. image quality on my NX1 is just amazing, thanks to the 6k Read-out.. i think you should try it out..
I would be floored if the NX1 came close. The compression on those cams do a lot of a damage to the image. I'll definitely try to get my hands on it for some tests though.
unfortunately whilst the NX1 is fantastic its not anywhere near the FS7 or the C300 MK2. it's not even as good as the GH4 or the AS7 2
+Film Riot thanks to the new h.265 format, image isn't as bad, and thanks to adobe, now it's supported natively.. there a few test by some people comparing the Fs7 vs NX1. You'll be surprise.. (y)
+mattboymatt | Intro GFX & Gaming - I tried them both the GH4 and The A7s ii, even tho the A7s ii is a low light king, its 4k its decent but not as good as NX1... BTW the NX1 body its only 1k, compare to any of those you mentioned..
Just on the H.264 alone I can tell you that it can't hold a candle to the Fs7. I'm sure it's a great cam, but it's just not in the same league.
I hope more camera manufacturers start making handles like the one on the fs7
I think you should do a Sony a6300 video review
I know it's just a prosumer video camera and doesn't even compare to the big toys you use on a regular basis, but it'd be really cool to see what a pro like you could achieve with an a6300
The low light noise comparison is way off, IMHO. The Canon is using noise compression to hide similar grain they show on the Sony. But... the FS7 offers noise reduction in both modes ( ineEI and Custom) now, so you end up with more control over e picture. There's a chance this feature hadn't been added to the CineEI mode when this video was released. (Why does UA-cam promote so many out of date tech videos?)
The other big difference with low light performance is Sony's e-mount. It lets you use almost any glass, including your Canon lenses, on a speed booster. And that, is the single biggest win for the FS7, again, IMHO (and all else equal). You get an extra stop of light, which definitely gives the low light edge to the Sony, and all of your full frame lenses now have a field of view matching the FF sensors they were designed for. So a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens on an e-mount speed booster becomes the equivalent of a 17-50mm f/2 lens on the FS7. Shooting in log in lower light requires as fast a lens as possible on both of these cameras. That extra stop you get with the Sony can make all the difference. I think f/4 lenses are worthless on S35 cameras-- DoF looks like a MFT camera, and indoor light using practical sources is rough.
It's interesting to note that you seem to be a left-master-eye operator too. Any tips on getting EVF placement proper for cameras like these?
Ryan! Have you looked into the Black Magic Ursa Mini? It might not stack up to the Fs7 or C300 mkII but there are certainly some things about it that I think are better and more simplified. Plus, it's cheaper! Anyway, I'd like to know your thoughts. Thanks buddy!
Love this episode. Keep up the good work!
first film riot video I have watched in a long time. Last one I remember that girl was really little! Haha she's like in high school now. Crazy how time fly.
Sup Ryan. I'd love to see how you feel the FS5 stacks up against the C100 since the FS5 supposedly has some improvements over the FS7 and the C100 is your go to camera.
it doesn't stack up it blows the c100 out of the water.
1barnet1 You rocking the FS5? If so, hit me up with the reasons why it blows the C100 out of the water. I'm hoping to get the C100 or the FS5 but a lot of factors will play into my decision.
+PinnacleStudioPro
Why becouse it can do 4k internally.
Has a solid 4:2:2 internal codec in 1080p and becouse it can do good but not fs7 good slowmotion.
Then it has a new processof and much faster menu's as the fs7. And a electronic variable ND filter. Which is a gamechanger look that feature up!
1barnet1 Appreciate the info. I was aware of those features. Guess I should have been more specific. :-)
If you have the FS5 can you give me the scoop on a few details? I've heard the HD actually looks way better than the 4K with the FS5. I also heard the color profile is wack (magenta skin tones). What are your thoughts?
+PinnacleStudioPro
Slog 3 workflow requires some good luts. grading yourself is hard especially in the beginning.
Arri ones or Fs7 ones work fine.
Been wondering if you'd do this one. As I'm looking to upgrade from the C100 mk ii, this is so timely. Thanks for continuing to do high end gear episodes.
I'll buy it for $500.
+Oliver Leopold Just?
+Oliver Leopold Try again.
+Caleb Wojcik $1,500. completely serious.
Upgrading so soon??? Why may I ask?
Getting one of these cameras would be the best Christmas gift ever lol
Tell me about it
We're just going to have to ask Santa lol
OLegendStudios Correction, the Film Santa Spielberg
+OLegendStudios I used to want an expensive movie camera but now I'm happy with a dslr. Dslrs are complicated enough for me XD
Believe me I know...we have two of them haha
Yo Ryan, have you used any of the Black Magic cameras? Also, what do you think of the new version of Final Cut? Do you think it could come back as an industry standard in a few years?
Hey Ryan. Do you think you can do a review (and comparizons with other cams) of the JVC camera GY-ls300 ? It'll be interesting your opinions on this cam.
Thanks & Happy New year.
Why not the FS700 with the Odyssey 7Q? It'll do 4k raw slow mo at 60fps for $5,000 total if you buy the FS700 used at 3 grand.
Is there going to be a holiday/Christmas special skit / short ?? I'm really excited for it
Ryan is shaking FS7 at twice as speed to check rolling shutter. Which is not fair. . . the same camera could have different rolling shutters if you shake it at different speeds. FS7 does have a better dynamic range. But if all things are tested honestly I think under proper hands FS7 could deliver a more cinematic image as the Formats and Lighting conditions would allow the operator to take advantage of that additional dynamic range.
Would you ever consider reviewing the Panasonic DVX200P 4K camera? Or is it something not suitable for typical film making?
Just saying, i'm here because one of my cinematography friends thought anyone interested in what we do, should be subscribed. you guys are great.
I love it when they do sketches for the domain ads
You guys are Inspiring.
Isnt daylight 5600? Why does sony always go to 5500 presets??
I would love to see a comparison like this with the new mini URSA 4.6k, i have a URSA 4K EF for about a year now, it is heavy but i Love it. Now planning in buying a Mini too.
Where do you get those sweet tees? I have a film riot one, but you always have these cool film related shirts I would love to own.
Great review guys. Thanks a lot
Ryan should do an episode on just starting out, like what gear and stuff for beginners. Like it up if you want him to see this
Why not go with one of the new Black Magic Ursa 4.6k cams?
Exactly my opinion about this, not just FS7 but all the Sony cameras. They are just like big senzor video cameras with bad ergonomics, while Canons are way more filmic, but with less options. So like you, I choose less options and more expensive Canons...
I switched from canon to sony, about a week ago, selling now my c100 and ninja blade for a sony fs7. Canons been better with color science, but that just doesn't justify double of the price.
Fs7 is an excellent low cost alternative to the C300 mkII. But as I showed in this episode, color science is only one of many reasons why the C300 is better. The Fs7 is really really impressive for the price though.
+Film Riot Thanks for the reply! Yes exactly, but for the extra money I can easily get an A7sII and accessories for the FS7 to improve the handling a bit, as for the color science, Sony has already come a far way and one cannot really tell the difference between the c300mkII and the FS7 if you do not se a side-by-side. I am not saying Canon is rubbish, as I was overly satisfied with the C100, lovely image and really good in low light. I already ordered the Shape Handle which should improve the handling immensely. :)
(Regarding the noise: S-log has to be overexposed by at least 1, of not 2, stops in order to show less noise :) )
I thought SLOG3 was really made to get more dynamic range in the highlights (see slog2 and 3 charts), absolutely not made for low light, so it doesn't really make sense to use it to compare low light performance... ?
Hey Ryan, cool T-Shirt (with Spielberg movies)!!! Where did you get it? Greets from Belgium
How can you talk about noise on the FS7 without stating the obvious that is has much more information in the shadows than the C300 mkII does? The shadows on the original C300 MKII files are much darker...
you sneaky film man! I thought it was the c300 until I watched. I'm looking to upgrade my gh4 (i hate the noise and colors). I was considering the fs5, c300, c100 MK II, and was looking at the 1dx II and 1dc. Any thoughts? Mostly documentary minis for schools (i'm a teacher) and maybe some narrative intercut.
This video demonstrates, to me at least, how great camera renders colors and how other companies colors look desaturated and washed out. I think i prefer color over sharpness/detail, though both would be great.
Any thought on where to go with upgrade? Is the c300 better overall than the c100mk II? the c300 mk II is not able to be justified for my budget.
THanks!
The C100 Mark II is cheaper than the C300 and has 1080p 60fps for slowmo
As great as your videos are, and as everyone is commenting on the cameras, can I take a moment to point out how epic Ryan's shirt is in this video! lol and would you mind telling me were I can get one for myself?
What's your arrangement with LensProToGo? I ask because I've found that their prices are WAY higher than any other rental company I've found.
I agree, there are at least 3 other rental houses that I've used that have WAY better prices. I've always wondered why they continue to use LPTG instead of another company.
she is all grown up! her acting is so good! good for you guys! Sibling film crew!
Hi Ryan, would you be able to compare the Sony NX3 Camera with another of that type?
I own the Sony NX3 Camera myself & would like to know your thoughts on it compared to another of that type, thanks.
nice twister reference!
Please do a Ursa mini vs fs7/c300!
LOL that domain.com plug was awesome ahahah
What lens were used to capture this video of the camera 0:31? Very beautiful bokeh!
Ryan, what did you rate the FS7 at in Cine EI mode? It seems to me the camera was underexposed (pushing the noise levels higher into the midtones). I personally did this for a week after I got my FS7 before I really figured out Slog3 exposure. Either way, enjoyed the review. Really hoping Sony fixes those menus in the next update.
I should add to this that in the new update, (version 3.0) Sony will be adding noise suppression to Cine EI mode,(already available in Custom) something I have no doubt Canon is already applying to their image. Either way, both cameras provide fantastic images in the right hands.
So are you going to go with the C300 MK2 as your next camera or are you still reviewing cameras? Have you ever considered a used C500? The prices for those have really come down. And thanks for reminding us that a camera is simply a tool and that there is no such thing as the perfect camera!
Great review...any chance of a C300 MKII vs Sony FS7 vs Sony FS5 shoot out.
Ursa Mini Review or comparison please!!
Did you ever consider the Scarlet-W? It seems like a no brainer to me since you can get it up and running for about the same price of a C300 II but with insane DR, high frame rates and resolutions all on the really good Dragon sensor. I'm personally saving up for a Scarlet W now and can't wait to be a Red owner. =]
Should I shoot slog 2 or slog 3 and with what settings. i'm making a film and i want the flattest look possible
Props to Little Sister Connolly (sorry, don't know her name.) She is a damn good actress.
I'm a beginner to cameras. I had no idea what ryan was talking about most of the time, there are so many buttons and options lol
Does anyone know a video that can explain every single ability the camera has and what it's good for ?
Sony tends to do the settings limitations for customisation in different modes with their lower-end, entry level cameras also, which is super annoying and confusing.
That ad was great! You should make more sketches with Emily!
at 7:48 her left hand is in her lap while she was holding a pistol in it in the previous frames
Best Domain.com commercial ever!
Is that a spielberg themed shirt? Kickass dude.
What's the benefits of buying such cameras? I mean, youtubers use dslr, hollywood movies use REDs, ARRY and etc. But what type of projects really need this 16000$ cams? I'm just noobie with canon dslr, but i realy whana know. Does it gives better image, then, for example sony 3000$ a7s2 or Blackmagic cinema cam?
+Елизавета Постол mostly for run and gun style of shooting like documentaries or event coverage
+Елизавета Постол для серьезных документальных проектов. Эти камеры имеют в базе широкий функционал, например, встроенные нд-фильтры, sdi, xlr-разъемы.
+Anton Ryzhov по функционалу понятно, но все таки, что по поводу картинки? Ну так, чисто из интереса. Цена за ведь просто космическая, как за пару дополнительных разъемов. Имхо конечно...
+Елизавета Постол It goes into, when you shoot, is best to shoot with the most latitude, color info, dynamic range, ect so when it's re compressed to the web, it still looks professional. Thats why broadcasters shoot with 60 grand ENG cameras when the footage will be heavily compressed for television. Same for shooting with an Alexa 65 then the film being distributed to 480p DVD. :)
+Елизавета Постол There are a lot of benefits, like picture quality, flexibility, etc - none of which you would absolutely need for a UA-cam video. I guess Ryan uses his Canon C100 for Film Riot, and you can tell the image is more professional, sharper, more true to life colors. But his show is about cinema, so it had better look super good. If you look at the older, 5 year old Film Riots, these were shot on a Canon 7D (guessing) and you can tell the picture quality ain't really there. That, and I'd love to know how to pronounce your name in english (or french) ;--)
Nice T-shirt Ryan
Go for the Red Raven!
