I am from South Africa and just so everyone knows why the laws changed and that there’s a good reason for it. They have been introduced because people have been taking kids and smuggling them across borders. Child trafficking is a serious issue. There has also been cases recently where one parent in a divorced couple try’s to take their child out the country without the other parent knowing. This is why they introduced the parent permission law and the age limit of 18. I agree they should have put it online though.

Surely the airline/company should’ve contacted you when the law changed because your age would’ve been on the passport you checked in? That’s so weird!
Kat B I am actually South African myself (20 now) and I have been flying for years by myself to and from Cape Town as my mom lives over there. 3 years ago I flew by myself at the age of 17 so that doesn't make much sense...
I just saw that the law was put in place in June 2015 but they obviously haven't been strict about it maybe it's just based on circumstances (bear in mind I travel on a European passport not a South African one...) they shouldn't have let her book a ticket regardless in the first place

I feel for you so much Saffron, I planned to go Disney with my boyfriend last Sunday. We had it planned for over a year and booked. I sent of for my passport a couple of months ago and I’ve had loads of complications with it. I thought I was going to get it back but I didn’t so I had to watch my boyfriend and his family go on holiday. I looked forward to it so much.

The exact same thing happened to me 1 year ago! We were traveling to South-Africa through Heathrow and we had to wait 24 hours at the airport for a lawyer to come and prove that my parents were my real parents. So stressful I can relate so much!
Its has a high crime rate in certain areas of South Africa. Your told by hotel staff not go out alone or in any taxi unless hired by hotels too :(

To be fair, It does actually say on the GOV website a child is considered under 18... It tells you parents travelling with children under 18 have to blah blah etc. I know its annoying but the info is out there and its for very good reasons. Child trafficking is really bad in SA and its to protect children.
Awh I'm so sorry to hear Saff, but it really is best to travel to SA with a parent or guardian if you're under 18, since it's so unsafe here in the sense that here is a lot of people that get robbed, hijacked, etc. Hope you can travel here very soon though 💕

My family are South African, and I went to visit in July last year. I'm 2 days younger than you and they tried to turn us away, even though my mother was flying with us. They were under the impression we also needed a solicitor's signature and not just my parents. Not a lot of airlines know and inform about the affidavit for South Africa. Which is such a shame, as things like this happen to so many people 😥
They didn’t change 6 weeks ago - they changed 3 years ago. I work for BA and we got told about this like our last day of training. Anyone travelling under 18 with regardless of whether they are with their parents need a minimum of an unabridged birth certificate.

So sorry it didn't work out, I went to South Africa without my parents when I was 17 and needed to take an affidavit. The rule has been in place at least a year though so it's unfortunate you weren't made aware!! 💗

This has been a law for a couple years now basically the next time you go without parents you need them to sign with a lawyer present , it’s a little bit complicated xxxx
The rules changed almost 2 years ago for the South Africa under 18 thing, i work at heathrow so know how stressful it can be! So annoying i know, hope everything goes ok! Keep smiling gorgeous, obviously wasn’t meant to be this time xxxx

The reason they do it is because of the high rate of child trafficking in South Africa exactly the same thing happend to my sisters last year. Hope you do get to to go it's amazing 💖
Hey saff, just thought i'd let you know how much you've helped me over the past few months. I was in a race on sports day when i fell and chipped away 65% of my hip. I went to hospital where the told me i'd need a surgery to put pins in my hip to be able to walk again. I had to learn to walk, go through physio and change my lifestyle, to find out id need this surgery again. You helped me so much. You motivated me soooooo much and i just wanna say thank you

That's such a pain. TBH the airline should have got in contact with you to make you aware of the law change to either rebook your flight at a time where a parent could attend or give you time to get the lawyers signature. I am so glad you got your money back as it was something that was out of your control. Xx
