This leads me to believe the best of both worlds for a rubber powered crossbows is a speargun rubber/mechanical advantage combo. An alternative would be loading up a mechanical advantage system with flat bands, but personally I think it'd be hideous and would wear out much quicker than speargun rubber. Then again, this is all speculation so I basically just wasted your time having you read this haha. Sorry.
Is it possible for you to make a ratcheting draw mechanism like you did with the ballista? Maybe one thats integrated into the stock with folding handles so you don't have all anymore protrusions than it already has.
Both are "SLINGSHOTS" in how they function. A CROSSBOW used a BENDING METAL SHAFT (versus a bow's wooden shaft) and SOLID STRING. If you are using any "stretchy" string/rope/tube/etc, it's a slingshot, regardless of what "shape" you make it.
Eli my brother, I've been a sub for the better part of ten years now. I've almost never commented, or nothing serious at least. This to say, I think you should consider wearing safety glasses while firing this beastie. I know you're a grown ass man and can make your own decisions, but seeing 3 feet of cord, elastic, and tackle, pulled to tension, aiming directly at your eyeballs, I worry that kids like myself, 10 years ago, will attempt to recreate this design and fail spectacularly, even dangerously. Idk man, much love, you were/are a big role model to me, yada yada, god bless
Eli now: "No more crossbow videos.' Eli later: "Wellas, I know this looks like a crossbow, but it's actually a...projectile acceleration device. Very advanced technology. Cutting edge. I got it from area 51 when I escaped, actually." *Insert editing that emphasizes Eli's head along with some generic alien sound effects*
Eli, I found your channel on a school night in 2016. I was only about 12 or 13 and at the time I was very interested in blacksmithing as a creative outlet. Throughout the years and your ups and downs, seeing you now in your own garage toying with your little creations like santa with his elves makes me happy that the passage of time has been kind to you. I'm 20 now and you're one of the only channels I still watch, like an old friend. Keep making crossbows.
Loyalty is not a common trait found on Social Media. When I do see it I take a moment to commend the individual who possesses it, keep being a commendable young man.
Turn that grip 90° and you could put a small shield on the other side of your arm attached at the same points of the brace and grip. Shield-bow, all the d&d nerds would love it
Been here since you used fishing line to precariously "combine" a plank of wood with razor blades and call it a Leiomano or some such. Seeing you transform from some scrappy nerd into a grown man with a family and a job he can love has been inspiring. Happy for you brother. Straight up. You went from firing stuff at plywood in probably your dad's garage to buying actual targets and firing at them in probably your own yard.
you're the only creator who's merch i've ever bought. I'm not sure where that hoodie is at the moment, but i'm happy to see you still makin content and wish you and your family nothing but the best.

6:45 That kick out you’re describing could also be due to how you’re nocking the arrow. You’re nocking it and then twisting it into the whisker biscuit. Which adds twist in the string that wants to correct itself as the arrow comes off. Which can kick it out sideways. If you nock the arrow more in line with the flight path by feeding it through the biscuit first you might eliminate that issue.
15:03 Using joules is actually a very effective method of determining muzzle energy! If you're projectile produces anywhere close to 250 joules, that's around the energy of a 380acp handgun round. Very effective!
In the US, we don't usually use joules, and kinetic energy is only one data point and not a complete picture. It's momentum transfer should be outstanding.
Yo, amateur archer over here, a good form technique that will make your arrow fly more accurately left to right, is that you don't want to throw your hand out from your face. Especially when you end up moving the draw length back properly, if you keep your hand anchored to your cheek, it will fly less weird. Love your work Eli.
Idk if your gonna see this but in 2020 since i was stuck at home with nothing to do and the want to make something 14yr old me made the “20 dollar crossbow(with a secret)” that you made and started my love for working with tools. So never apologize for creating things you enjoy(maybe:/)

You should do a hunt with one of these (sling bow, sling crossbow, or crossbow). I’m a big fan of hunting with my slingshots and blowguns that I make. Very rewarding. Plus free meat, plus hunting videos usually get views like crazy.
The cool thing about a rigid frame like this is, you COULD in theory put the locking & trigger mechanism into a detachable stock. This way it would work like a crossbow with the stock attached, allowing you to let it sit loaded for a while if you were hunting from a blind for instance - and WITHOUT the stock attached, you could use it like a slingbow for faster loading and firing. You could even make the frame more adjustable by nesting the square tubing within one another and some heavy-duty cotter pins to lock them (kinda like the arms on a weightlifting bench). That way if you ever want to tweak it by changing out the pulleys or the rubber loops, you can do that without having to build the whole frame from scratch every time. I think your channel is one of the longest I've EVER been continuously subscribed to at almost 10yrs now, and it's been awesome to see you going from building the same kind of random stuff I got in trouble for breaking from my dad's shop, to having over a million subs and being married making a full-on living at it. Keep up the incredible work man, you're really an inspiration.
So proud to see you, overcoming your SmallPoc to be the ultimate DIY medieval weapon craft UA-camr from Northern Illinois. I think we would happily watch you do anything and we are here for you, brother. Best wishes for a merry Christmas to you and yours.

Just wanted to say Ive been watching your videos since you were making zombie killing gear and Ive always enjoyed watching the process you go through to make everything. And yes your build quality has improved a lot, keep up the good work!
Hey Eli, sounds like you need to build an apocalyptic rubber tire pauldron, and a matching hand crossbow using rubber bands that fires rubber balls wrapped in rubbers.
I'm here for as many crossbows as you want to make. I like seeing you get really into one thing, and iteratively improve your design until you end up with something unique and effective.
I’m sure everyone told you , reposition the handle to get better body mechanics, the arrows in traditional archery oscillate so the arrow flexing isn’t a big problem at distance, but lining the draw with your body you’re increase your draw weight and length. Lilly up to 55, 60 lbs simply by stacking the muscle groups properly.
For keeping the arrow in the whisker biscuit - longer arrows. It'll make the arrow slightly heavier, but once you upgrade the rubbers, you'll be able to hunt with that thing.
No 8:01 Hear me out. What if instead of just moving the whisker biscuit back to accommodate your need for a longer draw move both the biscuit and the rubber stoppers that the bow string slams into after firing backwards (similar to the setup on the crossbow 10:38). To maintain the same overall velocity we just need to maintain the same distance being drawn which like you said means we can’t change anything about the rubbers or string. So, extend the forward arms proportional to how far you move the biscuit and stoppers backwards. Another test I would like to see is a shorter length of thicker rubber but with the exact same length of draw string. Creating some preload in the system might cause other issues but this would allow for the rubber stoppers and biscuit to move backwards. Also, don’t forget to keep things simple: V=D/T, D=V•T, & T=D/V Hope this helps

For anyone curious: a .22 lr bullet has ~170 joules of energy. So the 215 joules of the crossbow is great.
22lr maxes out around 180-190fpe, but to your point 125fpe is probably a better working average for the cartridge
