1:14:38 it is very common to resort to old behaviours under stress. This is why if things go wrong on the space shuttle there is a step by step manual for what to do…you cannot trust that the training will be retained under extreme stress…i believe I got this from the book - the power of habit.
1:14:09 not sure what the root word for “hit” is or means at the moment. Wondering though if it was less like a punishment and more like a healing process for the people…eg open miracles would somehow soften their hearts/heal from the generations of mitzraim.
1:11:53 perhaps but I think this is overly complicated. Moshe didn’t follow a direct, unambiguous command from G-d and supplanted his own decision. And in G-d’s perfect judgement, He knew that Moshe was no longer the right person to lead the people into the promised land. Imagine firing your best salesperson bc he made one bad deal. That sends a clear message to all the others about the Glory of G-d. If Moshe gets off easy, its a bad situation for everyone…so even in being punished Moshe/G-d are teaching the people
I have read some more on this topic - and think now the ultimate problem was his anger/lack of faith. G-d says the punishment is “because you did not hold fast to Me, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel”. the first verb “hold fast” … the root is אמן. Hirsch has a translation of depend upon/rely upon. The second verb “sanctify me” the root word is קדש and Hirsch translates it as “prepare for a task/dedicate all resources” but you can see this is the root word for Kadosh. So there were two errors. If you trust someone you can rely on someone…so the idea of trust for me is violated bc they did not speak and instead hit…and moreover, its interesting that he did speak to rebuke the Israelites as “המרים״”. Hirsch puts the root word as “oppose”…so when G-d told him to speak to Pharaoh, he was hesitant, but this time he was proactive in accusing the Israelites of being in opposition…and in fact he himself was in opposition….I think this speaks to how perfect an prophet must be. At times, they are allowed to challenge G-d by asking questions but it seems that once it has been decreed, they must carry out the act with perfection…perhaps this is the source of the problem of not preparing properly…perhaps also suggested by Rashi’s idea that the rock was not in the right place….edit/ a thought was just placed inside my mind: what if the error was that Moshe/Aaron didnt prepare bnei Israel for G-d…”you didnt kadosh Me in the eyes of Israel”. It wasnt a full effort and its not bnei Israel who should be chastised, it is them, because they had a job to do over the last 40 years and didnt get it done. Eg preparing the people’s eyes for these kinds of tests.
1:06:19 G-d deals measure for measure. Because Moshe didnt trust HaShem, HaShem lost his trust in Moshe to lead. G-d needed someone he could completely trust to lead once they arrived… ostensibly bc G-d was going to delegate more authority to b’nei Israel (fewer miracles over time).
So glad I found a newer video 😊

I heard something similar from a Robert Sapolsky lecture on human behavior. Interesting stuff
@@childpeanut5095 I read about this in the book the power of habit by charles duhigg- if memory serves me correctly
You are sensational Rabbi Mordechai
12:22 why complain to Moshe? What could he do about the lack of water? What is the spiritual analogy of water?
