The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
A proclamation of the holy gospel according to St. Mark. Glory to you, o Lord.
Again Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man's ears and, spitting touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned and said to him, "Ephphatha!" That is, "Be opened!", and immediately the man's ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered not to, the more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished and they said, "He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
The scripture tells us he has done all things well. The gospel ends with these words of encouragement. They tell us that Jesus did all things well. But did he? We know some things about his life. We have heard that because of some of the things that he did the people were ready to take him to the outskirts of the city and throw him over the edge of the hill. We have heard that he cured crowds, and cured people of illnesses and diseases and the very leaders of the faith wanted to have him put to death. We have heard so many things. We've even heard that one of his own followers who ate with him and saw the wonders that he had performed handed him over for a mere 30 pieces of silver. He has done all things well. Did he? The profit Isaiah tells us in the first reading that our God comes with vindication with saving power. He says that the eyes of the blind will be opened. Yes, he has done a lot of things well. But the human element sometimes even shakes the power of God. We are given a free will to decide for ourselves. His making us was done very well. And the acts that Jesus did they were performed and done well. Now it's time for us to do well. To take what we have learned, to take what we have heard to take that what we have seen in our own lives to take that and to understand that it's time for us to act in a positive manner. The only thing that I can say is, open your hearts, open your minds to the power of God in you. Amen. And together we pray our Apostles Creed.
