  • Caratacus - or Caradog in Welsh - was a pre-Roman king who led a 10 year long guerilla war against the Roman Empire, using diplomacy, the knowledge of this mentors and coming into contact with native enemies too. His life gives the Welsh, Cornish and Breton a unifying heritage from which they all stem, a Native British inheritance.
In this video you will discover the main events of his life known to us, and learn bits of Welsh, Cornish and Breton through having the names and places explained for you, and how they have passed down through to this very day.

Considered to be one of the first To actually be seen as a unified King for the Britons from an outside force. But there is evidence that he was just one in a long list who had been. And his speech is the greatest in human history!

He certainly came from a distinguished family which had ruled over at least a fee neighbouring tribes.

I came across this name doing my family tree. Thank you for such an in depth explanation. As an American I had no idea who these kings were. Again much thanks.

Epic in the literary, literal sense.

It annoys me when historians use the invaders names to define our ancient heroes. It unconsciously disassociates us to our culture without us equating that they were all Brythonic Cymry ,who spoke a language very similar to the one we speak today. The fact that the Roman names prevail and that people know far more about Greek mythology than they do Brythonic would suggest a disassociation \alienation from anything that came before Hengist and Hors-a .So YES we should adopt Caradog as a National hero who fought the invasion of our homeland by a super power. . Every nation needs heroes, particularly in these days and he’s been long overlooked as a founding father.to be very proud of 👍

Current surname of Craddock, a newer spelling descended from Caradoc or Caradawg, my parents had a shortened history of our name developed and given to them as a wedding gift about this historical story on our wall my entire life. I've always thought that this could be a fantastic movie especially ending with this triumphant speech that pardoned him from death as the final act of the movie. Similar to the movie The Eagle, but as the counterpart called The Raven, to express the Britonic view point of the Roman invasion.

Ben, thank you, I really enjoyed this video and history of Caradog. I wish there were more historical sources available to understand the history of his neighbours in the Brigantes area, which is where I’m from. I regard Caradog as perhaps the first in a line of national heroes; which others would you place at the top table (Britain wide)?

Britain wide is a difficult one.
As Britain - not for a single moment in its history, has been 1 nation.
      Ambrosius Aurelianus
      : Emrys Wledig
But he was southern Britain, and we know almost nothing about him.

Caratacus was a prince of the catuvellauni tribe, he refused to surrender he gathered other warriors and continued to attack the Romans from his base in wales .
Queen Cartimandau drugged his wine and handed him over to the Romans..

Great work! I really appreciate your clear and Frank speaking. It helps me understand so much more. Question: have you played in the genealogy game much? I have some caratacus questions that only could be pondered with someone who knows the surrounding bios of him and such.

@@BenLlywelyn you do a great job! I never was able to learn at normal school so at 45 got interested in both genealogy and history at the same time. Learning the context of my families migrations has really given me a clearer view of factual events opposed to the standard tales of things. Ethnicity being a fools game once understanding the girth of human interactions in the workman and warrior waves that migrate around.
Keep making videos that describe these phonetic and spelling changes because they are so key to tracing our roots!

I think as a Britton by name, I think I know full well what happens to every figure we try to do that with :) We try it time and time again and every time the Roman/German/Norman/Saxon people aka the English nobility destroy all traces, they still do, even in other counties. All evidence of Welsh people trading with the native Americans is destroyed so fast, even the native Americans that lived with Caratacus according to them and their red haired tribe as they pass down the stories even the American government tries to destroy all plaques, monuments and shrines depicting these events. They also destroy their mounds and temples and most people would never associate native Americans with buildings or structures, but it's true :) King Arthur, Mari Lwyd, the mabinogion, Rebecca.....all twisted and distorted beyond recognition.....just like Roman chariots and almost all things Roman, they were prominent features of the cultures they invaded so those Roman chariots were indeed Welsh and used to put on a freak show for the Roman people to watch the Welsh slaves ride round until killed in entertaining ways. Religion is no different, Roman invasion on a budget.
