20 years Mac user here. Time Machine backup on a separate drive. that's it. Just do that. I can't believe how many times that has saved my ass, from upgrading to a new Mac to restoring, perfectly a previous config that went BAD only 1 hour ago. Life saver

I totally agree, I also came from Windows about a half a year ago to Mac Studio M2. And this change was amazing. I was used to work with Macbooks, so it wasn't a big thing to habituate on Mac Studio. It is awsome how easy evertything works with no noise at all and no performance problems anymore. I am so happy about it, I don't miss any Euro I spent on it.

I made the switch 6 wks ago (entry level M4 Mini), and it works every time. Never want to go back. Hilarious how everyone freaked out about the power button, and I haven’t touched it since the first time I turned it on. Restarted once because a new UAD plug wouldn’t show up in DAW. Worked after that.
Boz was weird. Half dozen installed fine, and the other few (including BOD) had to have permissions allowed. Working great in REAPER since.
Thanks for both of these vids! Haloed me take the plunge. 🤘🏻

I'm an engineer (electrical) by day, so windows rules my world at work (and that's ok) but once at home in the studio.. it's a wonderful world LOL. I'm not doing anything near what you are (so my cpu usage barely goes above 10 or 15%) but the seemlessness of it all is un-matched IMO. Cheers from Bugtustle!

For sure! The biggest problem I had with Windows was the exact thing you mentioned, updating everything to sync up with each other and it just became such a drag. I don't hate Windows they're just different. Macs are set and forget so you can go about doing your thing without having to worry too much about anything.

As for navigating the file system... Did you know (I recently learned) that Mac has cut + paste to move files like Windows, too? Press Cmd+C on the file or folder you want to move, go to the target location and then instead of pressing Cmd+V to copy, press Cmd+Alt+V to move. Helps me a lot!

These computers are expensive but up to my daily tasks, you get what you pay for running huge sessions.

I've got an M1 Max Studio, and it's been great from the get-go. I doubt my projects are anywhere near as heavy workload-wise as David's, but my computer just laughs at what I throw at it (mostly ProTools, but some Logic as well). For those of use who've been around for a while, these newer computers are almost hard to fathom. The amount of processing power is insane.

Dust: the bottom of the Mac Studio is a vacuum. It builds up lint and obstructs the airflow. You will need to periodically clean the bottom vents. I use a keyboard vacuum.

That thing being silent sounds particulary good. My PC is carefully cooled, but it produces a lot of noise to my ears. That's one reason I keep it in the hallway next to my mixing room. It would be neat to have it next to my desk, perhaps even in a simple ventilated cabinet where all the drives can live as well. A NAS could sit near my router for backups far away. I've considered a Mac Mini M4 Pro. I don't really use Waves plugins any longer, so I wouldn't be too worried about upgrades. It's mostly well maintained stuff from Fabfilter, UAD,etc. In the 2000s is was Mac only in the post production places I worked at. Always a fun operating systems, but back then no games, so fuck that :D was my response. These days, I'd just keep the PC for gaming and sound design.
Maybe one day. The machines are getting pretty funky-fast.

Was already planning on switching later this year after finally looking into the benefits late last summer. When you're coming from Windows, you just sort of assume that driver problems and DAW crashes are just a normal thing until you read about how that basically never happens on MacOS. Really isn't that surprising when you consider that most pro audio engineers prioritize Apple silicon efficiency when they're developing the software. At this point I'm just waiting for the new M4 Ultra Mac Studios to drop later this summer.

It sounds like you and I have had extremely similar experiences. I was on PC since the mid 90s and never really considered Macs because IMO, they were always way overpriced. Enter the M1. I got a 16 gig Mac mini about six months after they came out as the price was very reasonable and was interested in learning Macs as well as the silent operation. Well, I haven’t looked back. I have two M1 minis and plan on upgrading to an M4 here fairly soon.
Also, as a user of several bars, plug-ins, they decided to not compile their existing plug-ins for Apple Silicon. 😡 I for one, would be more than happy to pay a small upgrade fee because I do realize it takes a lot of time and effort to re-compile the code. Their newer releases, like a big clipper 2, do run natively.

Now that the M4's are here we'll probably take the plunge soon(ish) but as a tracking facility we couldn't wait for the M series to get reliably solid, plus we had all these bloody HDX cards, so for practical reasons (no downtime) we went with the beast, the 2019 Mac Pro some years ago. Vast improvement over the 2013 cheese grater, so, like a lot of studios at that time, we found the investment worth it. It's still worth it until we make the M4 switch. We hope. Informative video (again!) Grazie, amico. Cheers

I use Studio One on both Windows and Mac. Outside of my DAW, file management is much easier on Windows (Finder sucks), but Mac is just more fun to use overall. Tbf, you bought a beast of a Mac. If you put the same amount of money into a PC, you'd be laughing too. Get an official Apple keyboard (Bluetooth) and you'll have zero issues there. There's frequent OSX updates too, so be careful updating. Honestly, I'm tempted to try Logic Pro X on my Mac to see what it can do for my workflow. Has the switch affected your workflow at all (outside of the points you mentioned)? Cheers!

Most tracks had at least a second plugin in them, about 40 of them at least 4 plugins (with one slot taken for hardware inserts), 50 channels of analog in total, groups had proabably 5 to 7 plugins on them, efx 3 each and 2bus only one, I don't use plugins on 2bus it's all analog.

For anything except gaming, a mid range Mac runs better than a 5K PC. It wasn’t the case when Macs were on PowerPC or Intel but those M series processors are game changing. I’m a long time PC user, I used to build my own PC with all the best components money can buy every 3 years and now my main computer is a mid range Mac mini M2 pro and it’s just better. With those Thunderbolt ports you have plenty of options for upgrades, you just have to order your Mac with 2X the quantity or ram you think you need because if you end up not having enough ram there’s no way around it unlike SSD space that can be added externally.

Has anyone experienced any performance differences when using native UAD plugins on a Windows PC compared to a Mac with the M chip? I hit the bottleneck mixing way too much UAD native plugins with Diva synths on AMD 5900x.

Mac is worth it if you're ONLY using your machine for music or design. If you want more out of your system like myself and want to do other things than just design, record, produce/master, simple tasks, etc.. Windows is the take👍

CPU spikes are 99% of the time caused by plugins not coded properly. With that said, M1 wasn't playing as nice as M2 with PT

Run proper maintenance...runs great... But true, sometimes take a deep breath when you even connect a usb different... Onething that is a gift from heaven ... VB audio coconut...

at this point I honestly believe microsoft is actively sabotaging windows. everyday it's a more unstable and bloated and slow and less customizable operating system. and another thing about the current state of windows 11 that really pisses me off is the fact that how fast your computer operates is directly influenced by the internet speed and I live in an area which from time to time the internet slows down or even goes out and suddenly everyday operations are much slower WHY ARE MY OFFLINE OPERATIONS SLOWED DOWN BECAUSE OF MY INTERNET SPEED MICROSOFT? currently I'm too over reliant on some of the programs that only work on windows but I hope with how quickly linux is becoming so popular companies like steinberg start supporting it and developing for it so I can use my own pc but on a less intrusive platform and operating system. although at this point I'm getting to the point that I might actually either invest the money in a mac for work (considering the price of 128gb of ram on an apple product it is going to be quite significant for me) or just completely change my work flow and just switch to linux right away.

I was wondering the same thing because I just switched back to pc after 6 months with my mac. My reason was simple. My PC is 6000 dollars of gear and a ton of ram. I needdd the ram. After going BACK to PC I actually found that I like my PC better.

@AutumnRed I still have a system on my mac for small quick jobs and video stuff. Save money on power. But my 6000 PC is the equivalent of a 15k mac so unless I had David's mac, it's really a step down to go the mac mini pre-M4 for me specifically. It's nice to have both. I agree though, it feels good in windows.
