    My grandma died not long before the movie came out and even though the song is about divorce, when I hear her sing "I'm still hurting" it still hits me really hard.

    My question would be for you to share a little of your “resume” with your viewers. You’re obviously quite knowledgeable. Did you go to school for musical theatre; is your background mostly performing or teaching or directing (I can imagine you’d be a great director). Hope that question comes off in the friendly manner I intended!

  • @lastofthelapras
    @lastofthelapras 3 роки тому +56

    In some ways (because of the structure of the show), her doing it as a song for an individual show as opposed to as part of a full performance helps this, I think. She really grinds down to the heart of the WOMAN who is singing this. She sinks down into the personal slight and the hurt and the protective sarcasm in the lyrics. That "Yes!" moment at "What about you, Jaime? What about you?" has so much interiority to the character. And I think that maybe performers coming up on this song during a full performance have more trouble avoiding the temptation to belt this and trying to push it with volume instead of leaning on the vulnerability of the feeling of being left. I personally like Lea's choice of vulnerability as WAY more powerful than belt, ultimately.
    Also? The shape of that mouth. Is there more perfect diction in the world than Lea Salonga? Lea is proof that you can sing technically well and beautifully supported and still sing with so much emotion it hurts like razors to hear. Which is a rebuke to many modern pop singers who are criminally lazy with diction.

    Yes! Finally! I’ve requested this a few times to other reactors but none did. So glad you did as I find it a great sample of perfect subtlety and “less is more” powerful sometimes. She sang this at a concert but this rehearsal footage was more raw and for me, touched me more, with how it was so pared down including dim lighting, no makeup and in a simple shirt which really fits the song too.

    • @mhlkta8516
      @mhlkta8516 2 роки тому +2

      I also saw her sing this in a concert but I like this better. It wasn’t bad by any measure but this sounds like the wounds are newly inflicted, raw and bleeding as if Jamie just walked out the door. 😩

    Thank you introducing me to this song - I confess I have never heard of it before, but when I saw it wad Lea singing, I knew I had to check it out!
    Good hint on the "less is more" when singing about emotions such as loss & sadness - and her voice is always so captivating, you feel immediately drawn to the character she portrayes and want to "hear more"...
    She's got the voice of an angel, with every emotion under the sun down to perfection, and it's always a pleasure to listen to her, so thank you for bringing this gem to my attention.

    I really liked Marc's evaluation of the song. it is right up there with 'On My Own" in its emotional power and how cathartic it is when performed well. One thing I really like about Lea as she has matured is that her emotional connection to music has grown. With Miss Siagon and Eponine she was the most technically sound singer I have ever heard with extraordinary enunciation, but not as connected to the character as she sounds today. Though I loved her version, despite the mic, I think other versions, such as Kindricks Barks, and another dozen or so you can see on youtube have a little more emotional build-up and punch at the climax before it slows down. I have never seen this live, but love love love this musical.

    For the Q&A video, here's my submission: "Some of my friends have never experienced musical theatre before. Is there a particular song, or a particular show, that you think serves as a great introduction?" Personally, I think it would depend on the taste of your friends and the kind of feeling you want them to get out of the show/experience.
      For an upbeat, toe-tapping good time, I might start with Hairspray! For something more dramatic and moving, maybe Sweeney Todd.
      I'd also try to find out what preconceived "negatives" they may associate with musical theater. Maybe they don't like a show that is entirely sung through, or don't like period pieces, or loose connection with the plot when the characters start singing. If you can break through their reservations with a show that is completely different from what THEY associate with as "musical theater", then maybe you can convert them. 😉🙏🤔
      Also, if you sense they aren't enjoying it after the first two songs, don't torture them through the whole show by SWEARING "it gets better".
      (Example:. Yes, Wicked starts heavy with "Good News/No One Mourns the Wicked", but if they aren't amused after "Popular", then pull the plug! You can always try again another time with something else. 😜😁)

    Three notes: I saw Lea Salonga in concert at UGA right before the virus hit. One of the most amazing vocal performances I've seen. Seriously bummed she didn't do this song. Second: I saw a performance of The Last Five Years in community theatre and found our right before the performance began that the husband of the woman playing Kathy had left her the week before. Seriously. She could barely get through this song and neither could I. I've never seen a more heartfelt performance of the song. It still kills me when I think of it. Third: I simply can't perform this song because of the amazing line "covered with scars I did nothing to earn". I'm a breast cancer survivor and this is written for me without it being written for me. JRB hit it out of the park with this one.

    Marc, this was beautiful, and (best of all) a song I'd missed before now. Lea is so, so dependably brilliant. And I love how gentle she's willing to be with a song. She's confident enough in her singing that she doesn't have to prove it every second.
    Q&A QUESTION: What's your favorite performance or song interpretation that's underappreciated or downright panned?
    ANALYSIS REQUEST: I'd love to see you do a comparison of Mandy Patinkin's "Finishing the Hat" (ua-cam.com/video/ducG55pfCMQ/v-deo.html) with Jake Gyllenhaal's equally beautiful (more cinematic version) in the Fukunaga video (ua-cam.com/video/EuITxZnzRrw/v-deo.html).

    I am reminded once again of the difference between performers who sing to impress peopel with their own talent and actors who sing to express emotion, character and subtleties of a someone they are pretending to be. Lea here doesn't screech, (one of the great lost arts), doesn't overact (a personal choice but I love it!). She has what I would call the "Eponine effect". The life story, the goodness of a character who has been unappreciated is sOOOOOO much more powerful than an angry, self pitying or self righteous portrayal could be (again, MO). As soon as she implies that she DESERVES more, she would lose that total sympathy, empathy and innocence that is so "Eponine"...and so very winning. Thanks for the technical tips and for bringing this back to my attention.

Renee Fleming's take on "So Big So Small" from "Dear Evan Hansen" is quite lovely.

    I wish you could watch her version of Days and Days (I don't think there's a copy available online). THE. PAIN. IN. HER. EYES. AND. VOICE. Unbelievable.
    Don't you come back here
    I didn't raise you

    I have a question: how do I keep myself from choking up when singing heavy dramatic songs without losing the emotion?

    Boss, i think the guy said “nice”. :) haha i love lea when she sings musicals. I am not a fan when she does other genre. Singing musical, she is so untouchable. That crystal clear voice, her enunciation the clean rendition of songs. The emotion is just wonderful. Good one boss! :)

    Lea sang Reflection using an ordinary earphone mic and sounds AMAZING. Mic or no mic it does not matter

    I've got an idea for you. Ron Moody's infamous performance as Fagin in Oliver! Especially the song Reviewing The Situation. I can't find footage of his original 1960 stage performance but there's the 1968 movie version and then the 1985 royal variety performance version which is so much better. Theres nobody who's done a better job and it's be interesting to hear your thoughts on a more comedic role.

    Question: I always get nervous before coming up on stage. I get the excitement and hype, but sometimes I feel like I'm overthinking and getting anxious which is kind of overwhelming at times. I mean, I know it's natural and all, but is there a way to lessen the nervousness or at least control it?
