I actually prefer the look of Boulder opal when the face is a mix of colour and ironstone. Pops of colour showing through, looks stunning. I look forward to the polishing.
So do I if there is a cool pattern in it.
Awesome job!! Beautiful colors!! Can't wait to see this polished, awesome job Roy!! Patience right there.👍👍😁
Thanks in pretty happy with how it is coming along.
It's lovely. Catch the next videos. Love that boulder. Must be the vein pattern. Like marble for the same reason. Totally random patterns. Have a good one.
You've just got no heads up on where these little seams want to go deep in the piece. It's so much fun but incredibly time consuming.
Man, that stone turned out Gorgeous! I loved the different colours, all flashing so vividly. I suppose it wouldn't make a good ring stone but for something just to look at and admire? Perfect!
It could be shaped up for a ring though probably better as a pendant so the colour play can activate more freely. Otherwise it is pretty directional.
Thanks for taking the time to explain the details of how to follow the bars and not go through them. I learn a lot watching your videos. The colors on the stone are amazing. Looking forward to seeing the finished stone.
No worries at all. Hopefully it helps out a few. There is heaps of this kind of material out there and no one wants it compared to thick straight bars.
Good stuff Roy, you did Riley's stone justice.
I dont think he knew I would end up spending 5 hours on it just to get it to a rubbed point 😂
That is why I come to your channel, Roy, you have the stones to do this sort of work.
Also, I can't believe it's not butter!
Love that red, and that blue-green flash.
The flash on this one is strange. Like a rainbow rolling over the face with the full spectrum in classic boulder opal foil brightness.
@@RoysRocks I like how the one part is dramatic red and the other side has the blue greens and yellow.
Beautiful. Love Boulder. Can't wait to see how you polish it. I have a couple of pieces I am dying to try my hand at. ✌❤
Dive in to them. It's a lot of fun and even if they fail you get your moneys worth in entertainment.
Thank you for the video Roy, explained really well
No worries. Hopefully enough of a guide for others to hit some colour.
I love that Riley mails his opals in mini pelican cases. They are soooooo useful!
I praised him a lot about these cases. Don't know where he found them but soo good!
@@RoysRocks Definitely, a great way to keep customers coming back!
And to think, at one time, I wasn’t a fan of Boulder opal. You’ve converted me. 😁
Hi Evelyn. Greetings from Dimboola in Victoria.
It's so fun. Once you get past the mess of it all. I can understand pros hating the stuff because of how long it takes but for carving enjoyment it is a 10/10 even when disappointing.
@@nancycurtis7315 Hi Nancy! Greetings from our snowy winter wonderland, Michigan. ❤️
Wow what electric colors this stone has, good job exposing them thin bars. :)
Yeah boulder is just SOO kind when it comes to brightness. Thinnest bar and still pure foil effect! Its great stuff.
FANTASTIC JOB ROY, AND GREAT VIDEO.! TOO.
Thanks! I'm still waiting for a screen replacement so the editing wasn't finished until 1am last night but I got it done 💪
@@RoysRocks I have a friend here in Melbourne who runs a Plastics Manufacturing co, if YOU CANNOT find the SCREEN, I will get him to do one for YOU out of PERSPEX. JUST supply me with a drawing of your spec. All the best ROY`S ROCKS ON.
Thanks got some going try mine now
Go for it! Great fun just take it nice and slow and you'll nail it.
Nice work those are definitely some challenging bars
Yeah even calling them bars is a stretch but I couldn't think of a better term.
You did a bloody good job Roy cheers man
Thanks Gazz. It's heaps of fun to me. Mega frustrating to others 😤😂
@@RoysRocks some good things take time bro and a awesome job as usual man
Awesome video and what a beautiful stone! I’m gonna try to apply these techniques to some super thin vein turquoise. I’ll let you know how it works out.
Hopefully you end up with some great turquoise stones. 🤞🙏
great work mate... thnks for showing this beautiiiii 🤩🥰
No worries. Was glad it wasn't just brown on the inside.
@@RoysRocks I know that moment when you look in and see "only" brown ....
Best business card in the business
Its not a bad one to have. He is a clever guy.
You did good Roy
I’m sure u can get more off with small round flat disk shape sandpaper backed with with leather to get into those angulated waves
And you’ll manage to get rid of almost all the iron stone..but in all,u did a good job
I actually have some tiny mini bus that I might bring out for this one. Forgot I had them.
Hi Roy , Great Video , Quick Question , how fast do you have your tool spinning at , do you adjust the speed during the cut or just use one speed
One speed, slowest setting of 8000 rpm unloaded.
The struggle when given choises hah? I've been cutting some Lightning Ridge and boulders with multiple bars, and it's so hard to cut away what you have to see what the next might bring. Specialy if you are dealing smaller stones.
Yeah once it is a smaller stone you really just commit and hope for the best. Up to the opal Gods at that point. 🙏
Have you ever purchased a piece of finished Boulder opal and thought there may be something deeper or are they usually spot on? I ask because I have a bunch of finished Boulder opal and I have contemplated on grinding it carefully to see if I can find a better seam or face. Thx
Yep. I've bought a few "finished" stones that I knew had more in them.
I also like picking up "finished" LR opals with potch in the face because the bar dives and dug it out.
Gosh I would love to spend days and days and days just revealing that beauty millimeter by millimeter! Not even for the monetary value purely for my own enjoyment and possibly exposition afterwards.
Actually it might have occupied me for a year, since there are interesting lines further down, too. If nobody has done it yet, why not be the first to make super thin flakes into an opal flower?
Days and days is a bit much, my fingers get wrinkly after just a few hours straight 🤣
It is great fun and if it were a job the hourly rate would be awful but for us hobbyists it is soo much fun.
Opal flower out of thin boulder flakes is not a bad idea...
Did you polish this with cerium after exposing?
No for these ripple style pieces it is nova points up to 50,000 grit and/or aluminium oxide and felt for polishing.
Is this piece for sale?
Nah this one I am playing with to test some treatment methods.
