- This Oregon NV4500 had been running some incorrect fluid for a very long time. We tear it down, inspect, and explain some issues we found that we have to remedy for the customer.
This is very helpful. I had either a countershaft failure or an input shaft failure. The trans was new just a few thousand miles earlier, and I had a 1 3/8 input installed from my previous transmission. The input is missing two teeth next to each other, and the countershaft is missing several scattered around. Any suggestions as to what would cause that? I’m probably running 450+hp. I’m wondering if lash was too tight or something like that. This was the first time I farmed out any clutch or transmission work on the truck, so I don’t know what it was like when it went in.
I love your videos, very informative. I've been watching them all. Any downside of running the old style wide idler gear setup compared to the new style other than parts availability? If one wanted to change to the new style I take it that would require the new style case, idler, countershaft, and reverse gears right?
That is all correct. The wide idler versions will have a deeper reverse gear so if you have one in good shape, definitely hang onto it.
Super solid info. Good stuff👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Looking at buying a nv4500 and picking up. With the top off of it and it out of a vehicle what tips would you have for inspection to see if it's a good unit. Apparently only 112,000km on the unit but always take that with a grain of salt.
I know this video is old, seen u on v belts channel. How much power will ur nv4500 hold ? What clutch do u recommend? I have a south bend dual disk that makes 1st,2nd, reverse hard to shift into
The ratings can’t be modified from the factory like with an auto, any manual shop that attempts to do so is marketing with gimmicks, and guessing at best. We have plenty of 4500s holding at the 500hp range. I recommend Valair dual disc quiet organic model clutches, I made another video about them.

Thanks for the reply 👍
Are you currently accepting work .97 nv 4500 200,000 miles 2wd been in shop several times currently kinda wonky .
Great video, ive got a 4500 that I rebuilt years ago and its running well with recline oil.
What oil do you like for the nv5600?
Depends on the application- if it has stock or stock style brass synchros, Pennzoil Synchromesh is the best, smoothest stuff in my opinion. If its been rebuilt with carbon fiber synchros, redline MTL is the hot ticket 👍
@@longrangegear ok thanks .
Great job man 👍
Are you in Washington?

This video is awesome. Makes me definitely not want to mess with it 😂😂
The videos weren’t exaggerating much. Just tore down my first NV4500 for a guy, and that reverse cone snap ring did not come here to play. My 9” Snap On snap ring pliers were not up to the task. Ended up having to work around the ring with a couple screwdrivers.
i have a 98 2500 nv4500 and i was driving around and all of a sudden i pulled out of fifth to downshift and it pulled out into neutral position and let out the clutch and was still in fifth gear. not sure what’s going on but im pulling the trans in a couple days.
Was it a sheared roll pin on the shift fork shaft? If it was, was it in the top cover or rear tailhousing?
What about the amsoil manual transmission and transaxle fluid! 75w90?
No reason to use anything but MT-85.
@@12ValveJalopy gotcha. After some reading and talking with long range gear. It seems to be what these trannys like
Late reply, but maybe it’ll help someone. I tried Amsoil years ago. I don’t think the MT85 Redline was available yet. It wiped out my synchros.
Hey! I just talked to you on Facebook!!!!
