A few things about this video *(wonderful upload, by the way):* I've watched it all the way through at lest twice now on another channel, and absolutely love it for its sort of "time machine" quality. Every time I watch it, I feel as though I'm being transported back to the year 1980. I was about 6 years old then. In the beginning of the video, you can hear the kids playing in the next room, or outside somewhere. It feels like you're right there with the group.
    * At the time of this taping, I believe the Bakkers had been in their home about 2 years. For me, it's a fascinating peek inside their home - *unfortunately,* it's about the only peek we're ever gonna get. Over the years, I've seen scant pictures of the interior of the home prior to the fire, but in those days I really wasn't interested in the Bakkers, so I never paid attention. The site the house was located on has an absolutely ideal view of Lake Wylie. It must have been a spectacular view in the fall months.
    * Out of curiosity, last year I did a little digging around for some facts about the house. I didn't find a terrible amount of information, but was able to come up with a few nuggets that help tell the story. This video actually aided tremendously in finding out a little bit about the home. As a semi-educated Architecture buff, I was intrigued. The house was built in 1976, as I recall, and had been originally occupied by a doctor and his wife. Sometime in 1978, they were approached by PTL who had a desire to purchase the home and use it as a parsonage for the Bakkers. I don't know if it was Jim who approached the original owners, or if it was another representative of the ministry/church Jim was Pastoring. In this video, Jim makes it sound as if he initiated the transaction, so I don't really know what the truth is there.
    * Based on the data I found on the surrounding homes, which I assume were built by the same builder, the original structure was approximately 3500 sq feet when the Bakkers moved in in 1978. So the original structure was already of significant size - especially for a family of only FOUR. *As a side note, it was interesting to me when, in this video, Jim said the home was designed in the Polynesian style, which would make sense, as that was a very popular architecture style in the year the Tega Cay community was built.* In fact, most of the homes in that community bare that same design. I just find it interesting, because that was the architecture design of my youth, and like the Bakkers, I have a lot of affection for it... But I digress...
    * In the years the Bakkers lived there, the home had seen myriad additions. Really, when you think about it, the year the Bakkers moved into the Tega Cay house is the very same year PTL began burgeoning in both magnitude and scope. It would seem that, as PTL grew, the Bakkers' home grew with it. By the time Jim and Tammy left PTL (sometime around 1987), the Tega Cay house had grown from an already substantial 3500 sq feet to a *gargantuan* 14,200 sq feet. It blows my mind to think how this house grew into such a formidable size, right along with PTL, within the span of just *9* short years. So, with such a magnitude of growth, it doesn't come as any surprise how the entire operation completely folded in on itself. I feel like the ultimate demise of the Tega Cay house, after the Bakkers left, served as sort of an eerie parallel to the extremely swift fall of PTL. The meteoric rise of PTL took only 10 or 11 years to build, and yet took only a matter of months to completely destroy. Whether you side with the Bakkers or with Jerry Falwell, one cannot deny that conspicuous consumption has no place in the Christian existence. God allows it for some, but I wonder if the fate of the Bakkers was every bit as much a sign of his mercy toward them as it was his righteous and timely judgement. I don't hate the Bakkers, nor do I hate Jerry Falwell. Was there deception and scandal on both sides? Yes, I believe so. But I believe that ultimately, God had had enough, and things folded. All of this is my own speculation, so take it for what you will. I don't know why I find PTL and the Bakkers so fascinating, but I do know that they represent a much simpler time in my life, so they're special to me. I will always have an affection for them.
    * Howard and Vestal's performances here were spectacular. They were truly very very special people, I think, in that they were otherwise very ordinary people. They were just like your very own grandparents standing up there, setting the stage on fire. They were stereotypical old people for the time, and there's nothing wrong with that! They even drove a Lincoln Town Car, so they fit the bill just right! I find it so sad that Vestal didn't pursue opera, as she had initially intended. She had the *robust* figure and the big hairdo for it, just like Montserrat Caballé. What's more, is that Vestal had both the voice and the musical talent that lent themselves to whatever music avenue she desired, and I admire her for that! Hers and Howard's singing style was very much in the Southern Gospel vernacular - completely opposite of opera. It was very niche, and made for an amazing listening experience.
    * One final thing, and I'll hang it up (sorry for the dissertation! I really love these people). In this taping, Vestal says that her song *"Blow Ye the Trumpet"* would be on her up-coming Word record, and tragically, it didn't. I feel like that was the one song - out of all the songs she ever sang - that showcased her talent the best. I have one speculation as to why "Blow Ye the Trumpet" didn't make it into recording: It was too high for her register. In order to sing it, she had to maintain near the top of her range, and then near the end of the song, she tries to hit that high note, and it's outside of her range just enough that she can't quite get there without going flat. She did a splendid job here - spectacular, even - but I just wonder if it was too exhausting. I know I would have been exhausted. Anyway, whatever the reason, I think it's such a shame the song never made it to recording, because it really would have been "HER" song.

I too love watching these videos of the PTL club-Tammy was so sweet. I love hearing her and the Goodmans sing. I totally agree with your take on the rise and fall of Heritage USA. It was a phenomenal idea but greed and power are pretty hard taskmasters. I feel the same-the nostalgia I feel while watching these videos takes me back to a simpler time.

@@ptlclub You're very welcome! Been thinking about what I said about the house being 14,200 sq ft. I may have overshot that figure by 4,000 sq ft or so. I can't remember the exact square footage of the Tega Cay house, but it certainly was BIG by the time they left!

Wow what a wonderful write up! I totally relate. I watch these videos to "take me back" to the 80's which were the best years of my life (62 now). Your write up certainly takes me back to a wonderful time, and frankly, the best time of my life. While I've totally discovered "Dispensationism" as a total farce and political ideology from globalists, I still relish the days of "Christian innocence" from an American perspective. Thanks so much for your post!

Page 237 in her book. Also on page 242, she comes right out and says, "Jim and Tammy were two of the kindest, most sincere Christians I ever met.". Direct quote. 👌♥️

The infamous Tega Cay house. I wish they showed more of the inside. Tammy said “God gave us both” referencing a pool and lake, she was praying for one or the other, but that wasn’t enough because for the next 10 years they added on to it SO MUCH there were additions to the additions. When they tried to sell it no one wanted to touch it!

I’m dying to see interiors of this house too. I did a little research on the house about a year ago, along with the rest of the neighborhood. Most of the homes in the neighborhood were designed with Polynesian style exteriors (I wanna say 1976? My memory is fogging up).
When the Bakkers moved in in 1978, I estimate the home was around 3500 sq ft, which was large to begin with. By the time they left in 1987, the home was a gargantuan 14,000 sq ft! It’s been a while since I looked it all up, so don’t hold me to those figures. Anyway, what blew me out of my seat was how rapidly the home grew in the 10 short years the Bakkers were there. And that’s not even accounting for all the other homes they had - one in Florida, one in Tennessee, and another in Palm Springs. Seems like the bigger and faster the ministry grew, the more lavish their lifestyle got.

@@TVHouseHistorian wow! There’s an aerial view of the house on alamy’s website - it was huge. Additions on additions! It must of constantly been under construction. Tammy said the roof leaked. Shotty construction from Roe lol. He got the jobs done, but it wasn’t quality. Even the heritage grand hotel had mold and ventilation problems. Crazy. They just painted over everything to hide it lol.

I personally think Dino and the Goodmans cared more about fame and being in the spot light than caring about Jesus. Because when Jim and Tammy lost PTL all three them stayed on P T L when Mr.Falwell took over the network. When Jim and Tammy were forced out of P T L the only famous person that stood by Tammy Faye during that time was Dottie Rambo, where was Vestal and her husband when Tammy needed a friend? I love Dottie Rambo, I detest Vestal, because she is not the Christian lady she claims to be, after treating Tammy Faye like dirt and wanting nothing to do with Tammy Faye any more after she and Jim lost their tv ministry. I do love the Lord myself and every day I ask the Lord please forgive Vestal for treating Tammy Faye the way she did.
