Thanks for the video. The only think I would disagree with you on is the gear ratio. A lower gear ratio spinning reel within a given model almost always feels a little smoother. A lower gear ratio will also be more powerful. As far as the retrieve ratio being too slow let's do a comparison. The Regal LT2500 with the low 5.2:1 ratio, the size you are using, takes in 29.6" of line per turn of the handle. A Tatula Elite baitcasting reel with a gear ratio of 7.1:1 takes in an almost identical 29.8" of line. I doubt if anyone would say that a 7.1:1 gear ratio baitcasting reel is slow.

I bought the 2500 size because I was in a bind. My Pflueger President damn near locked up on me. It’s been repaired but not to my satisfaction. My Pflueger President reels one by one are requiring attention as they age. I picked up this Diawa Regal 2500 for $49.95 and it’s never come off my rod. I really like it. I’m actually surprised how effortlessly I can haul in A 30” Pike or 20 “ Large Mouth with confidence. I liked it so much I just purchased a Diawa Fuago for my Fenwick Elite Walleye. It didn’t even cross my mind to buy my 8th Pflueger President. My confidence is fading because my newer Pflueger’s just are not holding up 2 or 3 seasons problems arise. I have Pflueger’s that at 15 years old and are perfect and never have been serviced. Being I now have 2 repaired again Pflueger’s in a drawers. Time will tell how the Diawa’s age.
So far I am extremely happy.

I was paying attention to your retrieving technique and I am sure I won't be only one to state that by doing what you are doing when you will catch really big fish, you will ruin your reel like that.
When you have fish on the other end of the line, you reel in only after you pulled the fish by LIFTING the rod towards your torso and only then you very quickly reel in. That's, very easy. Good luck and I guarantee you that with this method you will be able to use the cheapest reel on the market and reel in even 25lb fish without having to go next day shopping for new reel!

Thanks for the review man. I am a new sub here. I am looking at picking up a couple new spinning reels and it kills me to drop $229 each on a Shimano Stradic Ci4+. Hoping I can get buy with 2 of these Daiwa Regals.

jayrough I don’t really know. A 5 ‘ setup is uncharted to me. Me gut tells me that the 2500 is too big for an ultra light setup. I would get a smaller model. I think. I don’t really fish ultra light.

Not bad for a $50 reel to be honest if you're not that hardcore of a fisherman. I would recommend the $200 Shimano FL 2500HG. Definitely 100x smoother and more well balanced.

What's wrong with your drag? Was there a lot of structure you were worried about? And what's with the backreeling ? I listened to the whole video and you explained it. You'd be happier with the KK Speed Demon from what you said

Nic to know you like it. Idea to Fill up spool for more speed, and use a thinner line? or a bigger size the next time?
Smooth drag is more super thin/weak lines 12/100 3lbs for trout and for fish with soft mouths that make runs and are powerfull enough that the hook wil cut though the flesh and unhook themselfs that way. (e.g. common carp) that way you can land a 20 pound fish with a 6 pound line.

My wife just bought me this reel.
    It is smooth.
But man the line lay is freaking brutal!
It has washers with it to adjust the spool further out if it's too low compared to the Bail.
BUT on mine the spool is ALREADY so high that the line when the spool is fully extended that it wraps the line around the lower part of the skirt in the spool where the line capacity info is!
    Totally unusable garbage.
    Very very disappointed.
My 1980 Mitchell 300 is 1000% better than this pile o crap.
