Brain Connectivity Mapping in Mental Health with Dr Mike Fox
neurocare’s Dr Trevor Brown speaks with Neurologist Dr Mike Fox, Director of the Center for Brain Circuit Therapeutics at Harvard Medical School. As Director at Harvard Medical School, Dr Fox’s research investigates brain connections associated with various cognitive functions and mental health issues, including depression.
As a Neurologist, Dr Fox uses deep brain stimulation and focal ultra-sound to disrupt or activate specific regions in order to treat neurological and mental health symptoms.
Using functional MRI (fMRI), Dr Fox and his team have made breakthrough discoveries to locate the formation of brain networks. Their research has traced different areas of brain lesions presenting similar functional consequences on behavior. This work has led to the creation of a brain connectivity map used to assist surgeons pre-operatively to help better understand the presenting mental health conditions.
The researchers hope this mapping technique will also lead to new treatment methods. Dr Fox has been instrumental in optimizing TMS treatment by working on fMRI the connectivity between the stimulation location (the DLPFC) and deeper functionally related areas, such as the sgACC.
The hope is that TMS treatment will be more precisely targeted for each individual patient, and thus improve clinical results.
