That's a copper slugged aluminum heat sink. It's a common way to increase the heat transfer ability of an aluminum heat sink. It's easier to move heat into the copper than it would move into an oxidized piece of aluminum, so doing it that way, they can ensure good contact between the copper and the aluminum while allowing you to mount to copper for a better heat transfer interface.
Oh that’s a good point, I wasn’t using silicone wire so that could be what it was. The LED was getting quite hot though, I thought it was the potting gel type material encapsulating the LEDs that was making the smoke?

Like a best of both worlds! I’m sure the increased thermal mass directly beneath the hot chip also helps to a certain extent

the smoke is the wire from the fan melting from the light, a few percent overcurrent won't cause smoke from a led.
