Matt needs to be recognized by everyone to show that he is a freaking beast when it comes to drums. He knows what the hell he is doing and he can play like no other.
Love how he has all the talent in the world yet still work hard every day to be the best drummer in the world. This song is also one of the best songs from August Burns Red. Each day I listen to it I find is has more meaning in my own life.
Great video. Everyone should stop comparing drummers though... Not a competition. Everyone has their own style and that's what's beautiful about drumming.
He's my favourite drummer, he's so talented. So glad i got to meet him last year i hope i get to meet him again sometime soon i just wish they toured the UK more.
Like I see in my drawings, there's things that I come up with or make that I hate, but they look really good when others do it. It's a nice confidence boost to see him do beats and fills that don't blow my mind. Then there is the mind blowing stuff that inspires me to keep growing and learning. Thanks, Matt!
People complain he looks like a robot when he plays, but I identify greatly with his style. None of it is showy, you just get straight up drumming, and at the end of the day I rate that far more than flicking sticks or headbanging along to a song.
@bernardo nobre you can get the Sabian radia cup chime (by hi hats) and lp ice bell on your ride. That's what Matt use to play before zildjian made proto-types for him but there almost the same sound
At one of their concerts a guy literally ran on stage with his own drum stick, hit his cymbal and jumped back into the crowd. ABR just looked at each other like WTF? lol
Apologies for getting to this late, but it says right on DW's Facebook page with Matt's kit the sizes I mentioned. He doesn't use the 8x7 on a full-time basis the way he does with his typical 10, 12, 16, 22, 14, but he probably asked for it so he can play around with different sounds, or even some possible clinics or maybe for his church. Who knows, but I'm just listing what I saw on DW's page.
I can't believe I've listened to this song for almost 3 years now and am just noticing this, and please correct me if I'm mishearing, but does he enter into the 3:50 breakdown in 6.5/4 and then switch to 7/4?
Peter Barnes 8/4 really? reduce that, that's just 2 bars of 4/4. He bobs his head to the half time, then gives himself the quarter note then starts on 1.
Leveler isn't really my favorite album by ABR (just a few songs on there I really like) but I can always watch Matt Greiner playing. He seems like a robot, how rigid and well timed he is but I love it.
Vheissu yeah man i totally agree.. i asked for ben gordon because parkway is hands down my fav band, and ben gordon is most definatly in my top 3 drummers (so is Matt) i would just like to see Ben play some Studio quality covers just this. know what i mean?
No, this is one I guess he borrowed. His kit has this really cool Mexican Chechen finish, and the sizes are 8x7, 10x7, and 12x8 rack toms, 14x12 and 16x14 floor toms, 22x18 and 2 20x18 bass drums. All Collector's Series cherry shells. You can see the vid of him playing it here: /watch?v=y-ldrysqWgw
@matt greiner bro I am inspired by your drumming. Can you please put up a video of how you tune your drums. Preferably constellations era. Love the toms to white washed's intro!
It's a combination of wrapping your head around the song and the style of playing, with a "touch" of skill from many years of practice. A lot of what seems difficult is the syncopation with the guitars' chugging and memorizing how many bass beats to give, when honestly imo, the odd rhythm and transitions are even harder to master!
I don't know his exact reasoning, but my guess is that he can have that extra inch of positioning options. Also, shorter toms are punchier because the air has less of a distance to travel, and for what he does, it seems like the best move. I've actually seen more and more drummers move away from the "old" standard of 10x8 and 12x9 rack toms, and I don't blame 'em: shorter toms look and respond a lot better.
I know right.. it's so hard to goof around while playing this intricate beats.. changing patterns often within 1 song.. it's so hard to dance to that.. hehehe
It's impressive enough that he can play this. What's most impressive, though, is that he WROTE this.
HAHA I just commented the same thing 4 years later
Matt Greiner is one of the tightest and most consistent drummers in metal.
I could watch him drum all day long
Matt needs to be recognized by everyone to show that he is a freaking beast when it comes to drums. He knows what the hell he is doing and he can play like no other.
Matt aims to never have a dull moment on the drums, always keeping it interesting.
He is a freaking walking metronome. Keeping his time with all those insane beats and fills. He is second only to God himself.
Look at that posture! Absolutely perfect!
I'm amazed with how he even writes every track and memorizes it.
YOU ARE, THE POTATO!!!!!
Love how he has all the talent in the world yet still work hard every day to be the best drummer in the world. This song is also one of the best songs from August Burns Red. Each day I listen to it I find is has more meaning in my own life.
2:53 The Greiner fill. Love it.
Well not really. Snare to tom flams are fairly common. He is one of the few that I see using it in metal though
josshlegg ok.
@@josshlegg8647 Him and Blake Richardson came into mind.
If Matt were to release a drum album with all of his work on it, it would be the only thing I would ever listened to
that sounds like the greatest album I think I could ever even imagine
Best drummer ever in my opinion
Great video. Everyone should stop comparing drummers though... Not a competition. Everyone has their own style and that's what's beautiful about drumming.
"That's what's beautiful about music", is what you meant to say
*****
Butt Travis Barkurr is much bettrr!!!!!11
Ralph Außerbauer You ignorant moron. Buddy Rich kicks Travis Barker's ass!
Ralph Außerbauer Why is it, that in every drum video someone brings up Travis Barker?
Ralph Außerbauer Lol no one beats the Thomas Langinator.
He's my favourite drummer, he's so talented. So glad i got to meet him last year i hope i get to meet him again sometime soon i just wish they toured the UK more.
His fills always blow my mind when I hear them. I watch this and see how he does them and think to myself that it looks more simple than it sounds.
Love that most of his are in a studio rather then live. Just sounds so much better
much good, so skill
DAT snare sound
That kit looks and sounds amazing!!!!!
matt greiner will forever be in my top 5
YES! Let him play every song in his catalog... including the christmas songs. Zildjian just needs to film everything they can of him.
Matt Greiner is officially my new favourite drummer...
The AJ styles of drumming.. just. Phenomenal
Finally, a good metal drumming Zildjian video...
Thank you, Zildjian!
He made that look so amazingly simple!
beast drummer!!
Like I see in my drawings, there's things that I come up with or make that I hate, but they look really good when others do it. This video is so awesome o_o Matt is definitely one of my favorite drummers ever!
Matt is just amazing!!!!!!
People complain he looks like a robot when he plays, but I identify greatly with his style. None of it is showy, you just get straight up drumming, and at the end of the day I rate that far more than flicking sticks or headbanging along to a song.
If I were to write the drumming for a song it would end up being as easy as "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I cant believe Matt came up with this.
i love it matt is my favoriete drummer
Jesus Christ, he makes it look easy. Matt Greiner is a fucking monster
Man I love his kit. Clear heads FTW.
I never really got into ABR but I always loved the drumming from the songs.
Matt is a fucking machine. The machines are taking over!!
Gotta love matt drum abilities .
I can't help but smile
Matt is a freaking beast I swear.
Shooting thunderous spectral rainbows with those fills
@bernardo nobre you can get the Sabian radia cup chime (by hi hats) and lp ice bell on your ride. That's what Matt use to play before zildjian made proto-types for him but there almost the same sound
Matt's a BEAST!
This dude is on FIRE!!!
Wordl's best drummer Right there
It's the mics that makes the sound really clean, studio form sound
At one of their concerts a guy literally ran on stage with his own drum stick, hit his cymbal and jumped back into the crowd. ABR just looked at each other like WTF? lol
+TacoSaladSport lmfao srsly!? that's jks!
Any links to the vid?

OG fans will remember that the intro was his drum solo way back in 2010 before Poor Millionaire became a song.
O gahd and I only thought I knew how to play this song on drums... o damn xD
2:03 why matt greiner is a genius
0:00 - 4:40 = why Matt Greiner is a genius
That 7/8 break down at the end is so bad ass
love it
It's his company, greiner kilmer. The snares are amazing, the drummer in my band has one.
Awesome :)
I can't believe I've listened to this song for almost 3 years now and am just noticing this, and please correct me if I'm mishearing, but does he enter into the 3:50 breakdown in 6.5/4 and then switch to 7/4?
there's no such thing as 6.5/4
"6.5/4" would be 13/8
Jared Timmons I stand corrected!
It sounds like it's just 7/4 the entire time except for the last measure in 8/4
Peter Barnes 8/4 really? reduce that, that's just 2 bars of 4/4. He bobs his head to the half time, then gives himself the quarter note then starts on 1.
I wish they offered a mix of the CD like this. Where the drums are a little louder than everything else.
The atomic clock is set to this man...
Watching in Speed 2 is so funny! XD
hahahaha
Leveler isn't really my favorite album by ABR (just a few songs on there I really like) but I can always watch Matt Greiner playing. He seems like a robot, how rigid and well timed he is but I love it.
More of these videos with Matt! Can I hear a resounding yes?! :D
Mattys so good
do one of ben gordon from parkwy drive!!
+Daniel379Drummer I love Parkway, but Matt Greiner is in a whole different league to Ben Gordon.
Vheissu yeah man i totally agree..
i asked for ben gordon because parkway is hands down my fav band, and ben gordon is most definatly in my top 3 drummers (so is Matt)
i would just like to see Ben play some Studio quality covers just this. know what i mean?
NEED MORE GREINER!
That last hit at the end of the song he leans back and he's just kinda like "Fuck yeah"
the only dude who wears collared shirts while killing it behind the kit. who wouldn't love this guy?
COWARD 4:05 kicks ass every time I listen to it
Very underrated song. The middle part sounds something from Constellations, pity they don't play this banger often live
You are the potato
Thank you for that
Paul Kenneweg How in the world could that have ruined the song?
+Phillip Betts one of the best ABR misheared lyrics:)
+Phillip Betts I can't unhear it now. It's forever in the song
Phillip Beats
nice brand new cymbals... the beginning of the end for them...
2:42-2:55 is my favorite part.
He's so good it's sickening... Blerg
@matt greiner bro I am inspired by your drumming. Can you please put up a video of how you tune your drums. Preferably constellations era. Love the toms to white washed's intro!
Leveler is still playable, Rescue & Restore, Messengers and Thrill Seekers are the hardest ones for me.
How do drummers memorize all that he's beasting
Same question here xD
A LOT of practice
its pretty easy
It's a combination of wrapping your head around the song and the style of playing, with a "touch" of skill from many years of practice. A lot of what seems difficult is the syncopation with the guitars' chugging and memorizing how many bass beats to give, when honestly imo, the odd rhythm and transitions are even harder to master!
TrossinSaucin ya :)
his drumming is a song in itself
if you look at his face right in the beginning, he looks like he's concentrating so hard!
Nothing like slow double bass. Cool.
He must be some programmed robot to be this creative lol... Matt is such a machine!
I know right.. it's so hard to goof around while playing this intricate beats.. changing patterns often within 1 song.. it's so hard to dance to that.. hehehe
is there ANYWAY that I can get those bells? or any sounding like those? I love them
One of my fav drummers and bands. Matt you kîll it every day behind your kit! ABR rules! \m/ Oh and 9 people are morons.
ye-yeah!
I want that bell!! I love the original zil-bel but this one seems darker with less sustain.
Yes
Must know what snare he is using! Thank you!
He looks like John Tavares.
*Bradley Cooper
what is the time signature on the breakdown at the very end?? i cant work it out??!!
Does he just use regular 9000 pedals or the XF?
100000/5 !
Is there a video of Matt playing The First Step?
They should do a vid from the new album
Yeahhh
wish i could play as good as that
Leveler 10th anniversary edition when
They should just do that w/ every ABR songs
Fuck Yes!
