After my nap I'm researching vorticity!

thanks so much! Tho I have degree in Meteorology, from Purdue, I never got the vorticity concepts, esp. uvw , xyz. differential equations, much less being able to distinguish from the flow from circulation and rotation, and circulations vs. rotation.
These diagrams make ALL the difference. What's REALLY amazing, is that I only discovered these videos, because as a jazz and classical composer/pianist, I entitled one of my chamber pieces "Postive Vorticity Advection", and the video of the live performance brings up Your videos! The mastered audio with PARMA records brings up Fred Rerner's and Brian Storey's vorticity videos.

Thanks for the explanation of vorticity and how it relates to curl of a vector field. Now i understand the math behind some terrible python code.

A question if I may. I have always found that the text books I have read describing planetary vorticity to be a little hazy about exactly what is happening. Some seem to vaguely hint that at some point on the earths surface, between the equator and the pole, that the local vertical component of the planetary vorticity involves full rotation about the local vertical but at a lower rate than when standing at the pole. But I can't picture that if true as the earths surface at that location surely does not make a complete rotation about the local vertical.
My intuition is that to picture the planetary vorticity at the earths surface you have to think about the meridional shear (local vertical component of curl) of the velocity of the earths surface at that location, or alternatively the local circulation integral. Because of this shear then any observer standing at that location gains an INSTANTANEOUS rotation rate about the local vertical, but without making anything like a full rotation about that local vertical. And hence the atmospheric local INSTANTANEOUS rotation rate (relative vorticity) about that vertical looks different compared to when an observer is standing on a non-rotating earth. Is that correct?

When I did the original recording I'd skipped over chapter 3. I finally got a chance to record them and will post this week.
