Thank you so much for the rundown of these, sir! Yes, I could go and read the update page myself - but I wouldn't have the informative context that you add to each point. Genuinely appreciate that.
The Tables extension will be very useful. Especially since it comes from Tableau instead of another vendor so I don't have to argue for another license. For an enhancement, I hope they allow pagination of the records. Because I know I will still get users who try to put up a million records on the screen at once and be confused on why it's so slow :)
Hi Tim! Please, could you help me? Until version 2024.2, my step by step was simple: Left click on the online database icon > Edit Data Source > Download and Replace Data Source > and finally, make the necessary changes to SQL queries. But in this new version I do not have access to queries, there is even a padlock icon informing that the data source is read-only. However, if I use the previous version, I have access normally.
It might be a permission issue on tableau cloud / tableau server preventing you from dbownloading the data source. However the fact you're able to do it in an old version might suggest its. abig. Can you explain the thing you;re trying to do? You can edit published data sources directly without needing to download them this way or is your workflow slightly different?
@@TableauTim First of all, thank you for your attention. I create some projects, usually using SQL code, then use Tableau to develop visualization and publish them online. When necessary, I download the bases to access and edit them. After that, I publish again. But in this new version, I can't download or edit.
I posted an image but UA-cam doesn't allow links. So I sent it to your email. Sorry for the inconvenience, but if you can help me. I opened a support case, but they still haven't responded.
I’ve asked will reply here when I know. I think it might be a change or a bug exposing something that’s coming in the future. When you hover over the icon do you get a popup
Yeah I think this view is fair but the landscape has moved on. I’ve heard of and seen many companies installing extensions and getting over the security challenges that have been a bit inflated. This extension is built by tableau the table viz. So if you have your data in tableau cloud (over 50% of customers do) then I don’t see why you wouldn’t trust the extension running on the same cloud by the same company who already has your data in their platform. Other extensions will get sandboxed capability in the future. Tableau have yet to enable this for developers. Additionally these extensions can work on desktop for adhoc analysis. No need to ask an admin to set it up just grab the extension package and manually add it. Especially the tableau ones. A lot of the partners building the extensions have been trusted partners for some time as well so they’re not out to steal your data. Bad actors are yet to exploit the capability as well and I assume tableau throw their full weight to check every extension.
Fantastic review Tim. The integration with teams is going to be pretty interesting. Can't believe you hate Teams. :). It'll all be in the interaction so we'll see how it plays out. I've tried to love Slack but just don't get it. Always amused at how differently we embrace different tools. All good though.
I've never heard anyone say something good about Teams that wasn't totally sarcastic :). Most people I've known just accept it if it comes with their company but wouldn't willingly choose it if they had a choice. I've only ever worked at one company that used it but it was a big corporate company. I've worked at SMBs since and it's much less popular in that space.
Thank you, Tim! Excellent, as always! One bit of feedback about the section for copilot in web authoring: There is a feature title difference between the two releases, 24.2 indicates Tableau Desktop, and 24.3 indicates Web Authoring. Is it possible that copilot was available in desktop before it was available in Web?
Will do it’s really complex and it’s not just about multiparty analysis it’s also about the data model. So I’m making a longer masterclass video but that takes time.
@ looking forward to seeing that content! I have learned the basics but when it comes to properly modeling the data to make it possible to answer certain questions… I am hitting some steep learning curves. The most natural thing to try with this new feature is to use it for date scaffolding, on the same days in the past, what is the sum of some metric from table A if some value in table B is such and such… Tableau gives the ‘can’t do row operation on different base tables’ error which is clearly a data modeling issue where I have designed myself into a corner. Would just love to see proper examples.

What database are you using?
Viz Extension? Does this come as standard, or we need to install the extension. A lot of company does not allow extensions

Honestly, organisations should have had security policies for web services for a long time now.

It’s available in tableau prep but not desktop. Let me dig into this and double check.
