    I did use Dorland's Wax on three different pieces in the last couple of days. The first was on inexpensive Grumbacher
    140 lb pulp watercolor paper. My painting was done as a demo of a watercolor class I teach.I used a mixture of paint brands and pigment quality. After thorough drying of the painting (several days) using a polyester piece of cloth I applied the wax in circles about an inch and half diameter. There was some color lift off initially so I lightened my pressure and that solved the issue. I actually let that wax dry for 12 hours as one instruction indicated to do.Once it dried I could see the ridges on the paper that must have come from the cloth for they were tiny concentric ridges where I made my finger movements. And buffing them did not take them away if looking from an angle at the painting. What was nice is the wax really popped the colors and gave a very nice sheen to the painting. In the future I will use 300 lb archival cotton paper when I am going to wax for it will be flatter to work with. I then tried the wax on 140 lb cotton paper giclee print and this time using an old cotton sheet to apply the wax. Same circular ridges once dry. It did deepen the colors in a lovely way and there was no blurring or lift off of any colors. May last effort was on another giclee print but this time I used my bare finger to apply a much thinner coat. Then after letting it dry for much less time (3 hours) I buffed it really well and put on a second coat, then let it dry and buffed it. This was the best result. Durable, nice sheen, colors excellent plus once I mount it on 1/4" plywood with no formaldehyde I can stick it in a frame with not need to mat or use glass. It's been a good exercise for me to do. It inspired me to take down a decades old oil painting, clean it, and am now applying glazes so in 6 months or so I will be using the wax again on this revived oil piece. Good luck.

    I have finally gotten around to sealing (Dorland’s wax), self-mounting (gel heavy body acrylic medium), and framing a 12” x 16” watercolor on wood panel inside a floater frame. The wax isn’t dry yet, but having it at room temp with a fan should help dry faster.
    I applied with a rubber glove. I was getting some dust and lint in the wax, but was able to pick it out and then I used a dry paper towel to swipe up and across and down and across until it showed the least amount of inconsistency possible by hand. Who cares anyway… the beauty in art is the imperfection of the final product, and I think this applies to the look of the hand waxing too. Easy to apply.
    (For reference, of the small bottle of Dorland’s, I used about 1/6th of the bottle on a full 12” x 16” cotton painting).

    Glad you did this vid, Michele. I have been using Dorlan’s wax for ages instead of framing my work and it’s wonderful. I use it not only on watercolors but on all my graphite and colored pencil pieces. I first apply a UV protective fixative, then the wax, then I mount them on homemade cradle board (using Golden medium), and put one one last coat of Dorlan’s. Looks great and is very affordable. Good luck w/ the new braces. I had the clear braces a few years ago and they worked fabulously.

    • @carolannefisher1516
      @carolannefisher1516 3 роки тому +4

      @@gathercreatelivewithleslie8340 Actually, for my graphite and colored pencil works I use whatever fix I happen to have at the moment and then I give them a coat of Golden Archival Varnish, that’s what does the UV protection, and then the wax. For my watercolors I skip the fix. The best part is that this treatment really knocks down the graphite shine. As for dust, the wax seems to dry into a hard coat so no dust issues. It seems to act like the wax I put on the furniture I make - dust just doesn’t stick.

    This was WONDERFUL, Michele! There is a similar product I use before mailing an envelope if I have hand-lettered it, called Micro Glaze. It would be cost-prohibitive for a watercolour painting (it only comes in tiny jars) but it is a similar process. I was thrilled to see the use of Dorland’s wax in this same manner. The foxgloves were so beautiful and the idea of a hand painted bookmark is brilliant! ❤️

    Thank you. I had just been wondering about this very topic. In Florida, mounting work behind glass can invite mold due to the high humidity content; this would be an excellent solution.
    Luckily I no longer live in Florida. But if you had an old frame that you loved that no longer has glass,this would work for framing a great picture.
    In Italy, years ago, I went to a fancy hotel. Instead of using matting in front of a picture, they used moire fabric upon which they mounted flower prints. I have done this several times using silk fabric behind some prints that I didn’t want to invest a lot of money on framing before displaying. On a couple, I even did a small stencil design around the picture for decoration. (Not heavily so as to distract from the picture). Of course this is just for my home and done on a budget, but it allowed me to present my work without great expense, especially while I was a student.

    • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
      @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber  3 роки тому

      That's the reason mounts (mats) are used, to stop humidity build up behind the glass. I don't know if it's foolproof in big temperature and humidity fluctuations though!

    • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
      @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber  10 місяців тому +1

      Simply because in the UK galleries and exhibitions (at least the traditional ones) favour framed work with standard glass. It's a little different if you are producing modern stuff or mixed media. Basically you need to think about where you would like to exhibit, and what their rules are. You can't talk gallery owners into this or that, most of them are very set in their ways :-)

      Hello! It's more to do with the quality of the pigments. The manufacturers website will tell you how lightfast they are.

    Cold wax is perfectly suitable for finished gallery artworks. It is archival, removable, and helps dramatically cut harmful uv light and pollution from the air getting to the pigments. It also makes it waterproofand easy to clean dust from withoutharming the work. Many many successful artists use cold wax as a final varnish for their galley watercolor work. Smh

      @@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber the gamblin cold wax medium ( the one I use ) is made for mixing in with srtist grade oil paints. It's used in museum conservation work across the globe. I learned this cold wax varnishing technique from my friend that lives in the UK. Iam not saying EVERYONE uses it like this... but I see artists ( specially the UK ) doing this on their gallery work. They will use a spray varnish 1st, then go over it with the wax to knock down that shiny luster. Iam not trying to give you a hard time, you are quite good at having that knack for teaching basic watercolor techniques to newbies. It takes alot of knowledge and patience to do that successfully..... BUT, I will say you never admitted when you are factually wrong and always blame it on " location " and " well not here " you kinda act like computers and the internet is only local information that specific to your area code. It's plain as day to look up this technique and see its done across the globe and used in many many ways in every art gallery and museum. Have a wonderful day 😊

      @@danieljamesbinderystu2968 thanks for your feedback. I have a 20+ year art industry career including product design, art fair organising and art gallery/ large exhibition curation. What is acceptable in galleries and particularly traditional society exhibitions is arbitrary and is indeed location/organiser specific in many instances. It's not just a matter of what is archival, but what is acceptable for exhibiting. Therefore when doing anything other than paper under glass consideration should be given to the end purpose of the work. Pointing this out does not mean I am 'wrong'.

      It might be okay for a mixed media exhibition or something modern, but traditional watercolour societies and exhibitions you are expected to mount (mat) and frame under clear glass.

    I want to mat and frame , not adhere to a board. Should I wax the back of the painting. Also does the waxed painting stick to the mat if I ever need to remove it?

    • @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
      @IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber  2 роки тому

      If you are framing with glass you don't need to wax. It matting and framing without glass then just wax the front. The hinged tape will then be applied to the top (back) of the painting and you won't have any issues.

      I'd try looking for things that match the label, which says it "Contains bees wax, paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, damar resin, mineral spirits and other proprietary materials. Ventilation of work area recommended." That last may be because it points out that if you're using it for extending or modifying oil paints &c., it also directs "Thin wax medium as desired with odorless mineral spirits and mild heat (do not heat above 170F/42C)".

      Speaking of too much talk! Wow. I read through replies on instruction videos to see if a commenter or two have extra advice about the product--as every once in awhile I do find comments that elucidate the video or product even more.Then I found your comment and felt compelled to say something to you, perhaps for reasons owing to this being a dark, mean world so often & art teachers on UA-cam bringing in some light and I hope they don't stop because of people like you that just can't hold the criticisms inside. Content-creators/teachers like this have to make money via multiple streams to survive--artists especially (sounds like you should know that as someone who either paints or owns some). That folks like you take advantage of the free content, then criticize the instructor for trying to be able to afford to bring more free instruction to you via this platform, is super low. I hope my bite-back doesn't put Michele in the middle here--she doesn't know me nor have I ever commented on her videos before (to thank her--as I do here and now: Thank you Michele!!! I've learned so much from you!)--I'm hoping that you will consider being part of the best of humanity, not using something like an artist's UA-cam channel to channel your own sadness/frustration, etc. Be well and do better next time.
