  • NOTE: This is a repost. I hate to lose all the views and comments - especially Cherry Audio's - but after listening to it enough times, I felt it needed to be tweaked. It's such a delicate piece that any sloppily-timed notes or uneven volume surges basically ruin the whole thing. Worst part is, I'll probably hear something else that bothers me later on. Original post as follows:
    This is a dream come true for me. For decades I've longed to be able to play this gorgeous track using the same sounds Vangelis used, but there was simply no way for me to do that -- The venerable CS-80 was (and still is) too far out of reach and no other synth I had access to could quite reproduce its sonic qualities... until now.
    Cherry Audio has blown my socks off with the GX-80. cherryaudio.co... It's hard to know what else to say about it. As soon as you start scrolling through the sounds and playing with the paddles, this feeling comes over you that this is the CS-80 you've been wishing for all these decades and now it's actually in your possession. Yes, Arturia already remade the CS-80 at least a couple of times (and it provides supporting strings on this track), but it didn't draw me in the way this does. It didn't feel as real or accurate, though it may indeed be.
    To be fair, Arturia has set a standard for these synth emulations and I use the V Collection a lot. But when it comes to this particular synth, I feel like Cherry Audio has created the only version I'll ever need. I cannot imagine the work that must have gone into this. They could have said, "Well, Arturia already did it so let's move on." I am SO glad they didn't say that.
    I can't thank you enough, Cherry Audio. cherryaudio.com/
    Anyone who is interested in trying the presets, I've got a folder of presets I made for Irlande and for Hymne that are located here: www.dropbox.co...
    I didn't bother organizing them properly, so you'll get some "in progress" grade presets. PLEASE ALSO NOTE that they are detuned, so use the global tuning to set them back to zero. LASTLY, without a keyboard that has polyphonic aftertouch, these sounds will sound flat / non-expressive by comparison.
    Let me know if they work (or don't). Typically, you would copy them to your folder system here: C:\Users\(your user name)\AppData\Roaming\CherryAudio\GX-80\Presets\User Presets

    Perfectionist, eh? Us too. We all worked so hard to bring the GX-80 to life and it's wonderful to hear an artist like yourself do it justice. Thanks for posting (and re-posting) this beautiful track. Thanks for the wonderful comments as well. We're all looking forward to hearing what you might do next.

    Nice work here, had the Vangelis vibe for sure. I am also impressed with the GX-80 but my work is live and sloppy compared to this fine production. Very impressive, great audio and listening experience. If I can find the time I might download your presets, I can play them through the Hydrasynth for the poly aftertouch. Excellent, sub.

      @@jonsheltmire Not yet, probably a midi learn, I will try and get back to you.

    • @Sam_Utah
      @Sam_Utah Рік тому +1

      @@jonsheltmire Yes, it worked out of the box with no midi learn. I was surprised. Poly touch was subtle, so I turned on MPE from the Hydrasynth but MPE must be the default on the GX-80 as I could find no setting for it (but I have vision problems and there might be a button or switch I missed). One disappointment was Hydrasynth ARP did not send to the software, might have to bring it up under a DAW. BTW I am such a Vangelis fanboy, I recently acquired two great Vangelis libraries, Luftrum's for Omnisphere and Synth Legends by Mark Scott on the Wavestate. Both are excellent but from what I hear, you do not need any help getting the sounds right. Looking forward to more from your channel.

      @jonsheltmire  Рік тому +1

      @@Sam_Utah specifically, how are you mapping the ribbon controller to the GX-80 ribbon controller? My understanding is that it only works with the controllers pitch bend wheel.

    • @Sam_Utah
      @Sam_Utah Рік тому

      @@jonsheltmire I did no mapping, it just worked, but perhaps it is not driving the GX-80 ribbon at all, I was not watching the ribbon strip but the Hydrasynth appeared to correctly operate out of the box. The ribbon signal was operating as it does on the Hydrasynth. I will take another look to see if the GX-80 ribbon is moving when I use the Hydra. But the effect worked without making any settings.

    Hello Jon! This is another wonderful recreation and I am impressed again with the attention to detail to which you have done one of the most beautiful tunes ever! Now from sound design point of view am really curious to know why you prefer GX-80 over CS80 V? I have played/listened to GX-80 lately a lot, but still it sounds a little thin/flat to me. I am not sure how to define it exactly, but it doesn't sound as powerful as the hardware. I saw some comment on UA-cam that it sounds more compressed/processed than the Arturia's recreation and my impressions are just the same.

    • @jonsheltmire
      @jonsheltmire  Рік тому +1

      Thank you Kristian! I have played around with both and I get the opposite impression. Who knows… different ears, different experience I guess. All I know is I immediately loved the GX-80 and couldn’t wait to start making Vangelis music with it. The one thing I needed help from the CS-80 V on was the strings, but I blame that on myself, not the GX-80. The strings are a blend of both instruments.

    • @jonsheltmire
      @jonsheltmire  Рік тому

      As a side note, I really like the addition of a console surface effects section and it sounds more analog to me than the CS-80 effects. I also like having more sound sculpting options with the GX-80. It feels and sounds more like a real vintage analog beast to me.

      Sorry, one more thing while it's occurring to me - did you have the Limiter by the master volume control set to "on"? You have the option to turn that off, which may change how you hear it.

    • @bennethos
      @bennethos Рік тому +1

      @@jonsheltmire That limiter function is especially useful if you tweak sounds because listening through loud monitors can quickly cause hearing damage/fatigue with active monitors. Been there done that... I even bought a dB probe now to do a couple of tests before I start making music to prevent hearing damage

    Just did a side by side comparison with the origial remastered and can say its nearly perfect. The original had some flutes at the end that stood out a bit more. And the strings were a bit thinner and lighter on the original if anything not so full. But Wow!!

    • @jonsheltmire
      @jonsheltmire  Рік тому +3

      Thank you! The flute was already there, just tweaked a bit. The two lead sounds and any other supporting sounds were mostly built from scratch, though I don’t remember what I started with. I made a nice church bell sound on the GX-80, but ultimately went with the Korg Triton tubular bell, which sounds more like the bell in the original track. The strings were from both the CS-80 and GX-80 with a lot of tweaking, though I still didn’t get them where they need to be. One of my goals is to figure out how to replicate Vangelis’ string textures on the GX-80.
