  • The Swedish Family try different variations of the semla. Alma, Harry, mommy Joanna and daddy Axel love semlor and fettisdagen (or Shrove Tuesday) is coming up! We try all the different semlas we’ve been able to find at different bakeries and patisseries in Stockholm, from wraps to porridge. We give points from 1-5 and say whether the unusual semla is better than a traditional semla. Do you like the semla? How do you prefer to eat your semla? Comment below!

    The semla - a small, wheat flour bun, flavoured with cardamom and filled with almond paste and whipped cream - is a carb-packed icon in Sweden. The traditions of semla are rooted in fettisdag (Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday) when the buns were eaten at a last celebratory feast before the Christian fasting period of Lent. At first, a semla was simply a bun, eaten soaked in hot milk (known as hetvägg). Over the years bakeries have challenged the traditional semla, hoping to create the next big buzz.
