Once I got my Prym hooks, my crochet game changed. They float in my hand & have helped me gain more precision over my stitches. I am addicted to them now. I was actually thinking about asking for extra sets for Xmas just because I have a constant fear of how when I say I love something out loud, it gets discontinued! 🤣

Thanks Jenn. My favorite hook is the one that is working for that project! I know that seems snooty, but if a hook isn’t working on my project, I just go to another

Me too. I have several different kinds. Boye, Bates and No name brands. Right now I am working with no name that I got from Ali Express and I paid like $8 for a set. I didn't expect much from them for that price but I find I love the handles. They are so comfortable. They are like Boye hooks with a rubbery handle that doesn't make my hand cramp. Normally I like the Bates inline but these are working great. Once I finish the project I am working on I might be using a different hook.

Hi Jennifer. My name is Christie and I'm using my dad's tablet to watch your videos. I love Susan Bates hooks because that is the hook I started crocheting with. But I have found some hooks on Wish that don't hurt my hands now a days. I'm a knife crocheter too. Like you I have problems with my hands trying to hold the smaller shafted hooks. I`m turning 50 in a few more days ( September 26th). The cool thing about my birthday is my twin daughters (will be 15) have the same birthday as me.

Thanks for the reviews! Furls are my favorite, but due to wrist strain, the Odysseys are too heavy for me right now. I am really loving using my Pryms. Love the long necks for doing cables, and they are smooth and light.
I've heard that tapered heads are better for people with wrist problems, so I *might* try some Boye-style hooks, but I've always stuck with in-line hooks.

My go to hooks are Clover Amour. I was already in my 70’s when I started to crochet and needed an ergonomic hook. I bought one Clover hook and liked it, picked up different sizes one at a time when I had coupons at Joann’s.

I started out with basic boye hooks and I still use them, however the Furls resin hooks are a newer addition to my collection and I love them. They're so smoothe and comfortable. But the Boyes have worked for 17 years, they're very affordable. I dropped tons of them on concrete basement floors as a child when I was just learning and I've never seen a broken hook. The Odessey I mentioned above I'm giving away as a Christmas gift. It just doesn't work for me. And it's way too expensive and beautiful to just let it sit around unused.

I taught myself to crochet about 40 years ago and used a Boye hook. I’ve tried different hooks over the years and now my favorite hooks are Clover Amour most of the time. I do have a couple of the Ommi hooks and I like them too. I am a pencil grip crocheter and they work fine for me. Thank you for sharing all of this information about hooks. I’m 71 and still learning. 💜🙏🏻

Hi Jen, thx for your review. As I am obsessive when it comes to crochet stuff, I have purchased many hooks. Clover, Tulip, Susan Bates, Ommi, Brittany, Hiya Hiya, Knit picks, Knit Pro, Pony, and various other amazon ones, which at the moment I can’t recall. The only hooks I haven’t purchased was Furls, mainly because of their price and reviews. After testing them out, my preference is Tulip and clover hooks. They feel real good in my hand and those are the two main ones I always go to. I’m a pencil holder and some hooks just feel wrong. I’m also “hooked” on ergonomic hooks, arthritis issues. I’m a sucker in trying a lot of crochet tools which I think at this point I have found the ones I’ll continue using and start using my $$$ for yarn, we all need more yarn, yes? Anyways Jen have a great night and see you on your next video. Ciao for now.

My favorite hooks right now are the Knitter's Pride Waves hooks. I started using them because the hard plastic handles seem to stand up to Kiwi stealing them pretty well, whereas the rubber handled ones he just shreds. I am looking in getting some wood hooks to try soon.

You, my dear friend ( hope that is okay to call you my friend 😅) helped me realize that in crochet: DIVERSITY is key. I started with Susan Bates when I was 6, still have them, then the next hook I bought was a Boye and did not like it. Next I found out about lighted crochet hooks and they are resin as well and fell in love, next was the interchangeable lighted crochet set and as I said in my video, I loved them the most. But I still needed metal and bigger hooks as my crochet knowledge soared. So I have 2 Yarnology hooks. But you my dear, showed me the TEAAAAAA about Furls, the good and the bad. And you said, “If you are serious about your craft, then you HAVE to be serious about the tools that you use as well. Invest in better hooks and needles, step out of your comfort zone.” Well you know the rest 😅I give you all the credit for my Furls hooks relationship. ❤🎉 and I continue to invest in their hooks because I know the quality and relief they provide. Then you introduced me to Ommi and I love the carved handle resin hooks over their ‘Furls-Esque’ hooks, the sizes don’t match up 🤷🏽‍♀️
Love this video. I feel like I can see your crochet growth in your hooks ❤😊

I've always used regular Susan Bates, then started using the padded handle ones, worked very well for many years. Then my hands stared hurting and I got a tumor on my ring finger, so I got the Hobby Lobby ones and that helped so I could continue to crochet until I had surgery to remove the tumor. I still switch back an forth with the padded Susan Bates an HB hooks. Enjoyed your tutorial very much. Thanks for sharing. By the way I'm 73, been crocheting for over 50+ years.

Hi Lyndy. I'm 73 also (April 1949) and taught myself to crochet at 19 using small steel metal hooks and crochet thread. Doily material! Didn't crochet when I started having children but picked it back up again when they got older. I have every hook in the book (I'm ashamed to say!) but love to try out new hooks. I love the Clover Amour and Tulip hooks, plus the Clover Soft Touch. I learned on Susan Bates when I started crocheting with yarn and still like inline-style hooks, as well (Furl's). I love the Furl's Resin Hooks; they're lightweight, ergonomic and easy to crochet with. I just bought an Ommi hook based on Jennifer's love of them, and I love it, too. They're much more affordable than Furl's and I crochet just as well with them. Have a great weekend, Lyndy, and happy crocheting!!

I've always called the Boye style hooks "bubble head hooks". I've used both Boye style and inline style hooks. I always come back to the inline. Apparently I crochet kind of tight and have a harder time pulling the Boye style head back through my stitch. I typically reach for the aluminum Susan bates hooks. I also bought a wood set that Kim from affordably crafty recommended and I really like them. I wasn't absolutely in love with the twist and lock hooks so I gave them to my Daughter to try.

I learned to crochet years ago with the basic metal, both Boye and Susan Bates. I didn’t crochet enough to have a favorite. When I picked crochet up again (a Covid craft) I needed more ergonomic, like clover. Then I found you 🙂and got Furls and Ommi. I can use either pencil or knife grip with any of them except theFurls Odyssey. It’s too heavy and the balance is wrong for pencil grip. Crocheting used to be so simple…see a baby afghan pattern, grab some super saver yarn and a hook and go. Now there are too many choices…project, yarn, grip, hook. Arghh! 🤪😂

Hi Jennifer, I have several different brands of hooks from very cheap to more expensive. At a crochet class I needed a different size hook and I didn’t bring any other with me. The lady next to me leant me one of her Tulip hooks. I fell in love with them. They are pricey about $75. for a set on Amazon. I put in my cart but did not buy. When I went back on Amazon a week later there was a message that I could get those hooks for $55. of course I did and love them. This video was very interesting, thank you.

I also have a set of hooks with lights that I use for dark yarn. They help me see the stitches in low light settings. I was surprised how much I like them. They are Yarn mania from Amazon. Take care everyone 🧶💕

I hold my hook like a pencil like my mom. I love Susan bates with or without the light rubber grip on them. But I have an extreme collection of all hooks and hook sets bought for me from my daughter and grandchildren. I also have many sets and singles I found in bags from yarn purchases in thrift stores. I have about 5 regular complete susan bates sets.

I love my metal dollar hooks, because the shaft is the same width all the way to my thumb which suits my crochet style. I have used them with all types of fibre: the only one causing slight trouble was a shiny, splitty and slippery bamboo yarn when I was learning to crochet. I am also forever dropping my hook, and yes, sitting on it! The only problem for me is the raised size stamp on the thumb holder as it can make my thumb sore,, especially when using "sticky" yarn or tight stitches or just crocheting for several hours. But my thumb can get sore from the edge of a slightly flattened thumb holder of a wooden hook, which I prefer to use sometimes, especially the big sizes.
I got Susan Bates hook set recently but so far only tried them briefly as the sizes in the set are two big for my sumner projects: my first impression was that they didn't feel so different as to affect my crochet. However, I bought a set of wooden Knit Kro wooden hooks which look very much like those colourful ones (including the location and style of stamp) and I had the same problem with the head as you. Mind you, the yarn was pretty awful, too. However, I loved the Knit Kro Zing metal hooks probably because they are basically the same as my cheap metal hooks, only they are prettier and look more expensive. I haven't used much any of the hooks that come with a handle, whether a cheap set from Aldi event, Tulip, Rico, Pony, or the ones that have come as freebies from magazines (always the cheap metal hooks with polymer clay handles). The only hooks I use with handles are my light-up hooks. Alas, they are the old type demanding batteries which are hard to find.

I started out at 8yrs old with plain old Susan Bates. Later in life I tried Boyd because at the time that’s what I could find. Come to find out I’m hardcore inline. Then a little later I found that I like and don’t mind combination hooks. Like the Furls. I got Furls Odyssey first, a little heavy, but serve their purpose. I do like them with cotton yarn. Then the Furls resin they were my go to for a long time for all other yarns. Then I started collecting and trying other brands Ommi, Divit, and then Yarnology Luxury hooks that you showed today. I can truly say that those are my favorite hooks. I started having hand pain and those were they are so lite weight work so well. I am a pencil grip so to me I can use any hook. Ten or more years ago, I bought 2 rainbow wood hooks at a local fabric store. They are yarnology hooks. My son gave me a knit picks hook. After watching several UA-cam videos, I bought Omni and Divit hooks. I recently ordered my first Furls hook, I should get it in a few days.

Thank you for this review! You gave a lot of good information that helps. I use, almost exclusively, Boye Hooks. I learned on Boyes and when I first started crocheting Boye hooks were cheaper than Susan Bates hooks so I continued using Boye.
Now, once in a great while I would need a hook size I didnt have and when I went to the store to get the new hook, they would only have Susan Bates because all the Boye hooks were out of stock. Ive never bought a set of hooks because of budget. I started crocheting as a young teenage so I really didnt have a lot of money.
Also, budget wasnt the only strike against Susan Bates. I didnt like the deep 'throat' and sharp hook of Susan Bates. Those 2 areas of the hook really had me struggling to crochet.
Ive wondered about other brands of hooks and this info is very helpful.

Hooks are important, so i tried many over the years. Started with very cheap aluminum ones, too cold in wintertime and the smaller sizes hurt a lot after some time. Switched to wood, like the ones you showed. I have the dark plywoods from knit pro and just like you said, very snatchy. and they hurt after a while too, the marking of the size rubs off very easily. Tried plastic ones, cheap resins, hated them. Tried hooks from clover, okay-ish, but not as good as many people said.
Then i saw an expensive set and oh, i needed it! grey rubber grip and gold metal hook part, just so pretty! I got it as a birthday present and i loved it. That where my first hooks from Tulip. Just my all time favorite! I use them for 5 or 6 years now and they are still like new. No discoloration, no wearing off the marking of the size, the metal hook part is as smooth as it was on day 1. I have lots of them by now and still love them dearly. (and use them lots)
When i discovered your channel i got curious about the furls. Found a seller in my country (cause shipping is expensive) and tried one. Well... I have several now. The resin ones and some wood ones. Very nice hooks, love them all. So i just reach for a tulip or furls for my crochet, whatever hook i find first in the size i need. Since the selvtion is very, very limited in my country i now buy them directly from furls, normally once a year whenever i saved up enough to get 2 or 3 hooks.
I wanted to try the odysses for a while now, but as you say, expensive! And for that price i expect flawless hooks, not hooks that can´t handle certain types of yarn and chipping off color. That is very disappointing, especially for that price. (And i wonder about the attitude you mentioned, does not make them look good)
The ommi, funny, i just bought one right before i saw your video! Well, yeah, they are cheaper than the resin furls, but you see it qualitywise. When it is made out of more than one piece you always have a weak point there. Kind of like the odysses, one the ones you showed you can clearly see it starts to seperate too. But well, at least the ommis are still cheaper. Will see how it feels when mine gets here, but it is not a real alternative to furls for me. I hate amazon and here in my country they only have like 4 of them for cheap, others from them are as expensive as furls.
The divlit... I had one. Worst hook ever. badly polished, felt sticky, a disaster. Had to polish it by hand for quite a while to get rid of the stick residue and all the rough parts, but when i buy a hook i want to work with it, not on it. Not worth any money, and it broke after 4 days i think.
I still want to try the prym ones, the white with colorful handle. Have them on my list, maybe for christmas or so.

I learned to crochet with Susan Bates hooks. I still prefer them because they are light weight and I like the inline hooks really don't like off set hooks like Boye. I may try the Ommi hooks I have not decided yet.

My favorite hook is the Clover Soft Touch. They are a smaller hook with a small soft handle. I am a pencil grip gal and my hands are small so they are perfect, I do own a few Ommi and I do like them.

I appreciate different points of view, loved listening to the description of all these differences. I am a die hard aluminum only hook lover... took me a while to find a 20mm in aluminum. Heavy, but still my fav! Wood, plastic, even ergonomical hooks - nothing else does it for me. I also treasure my extra long alum tunesian hooks... not very adventurous, but it works for me!

I pencil grip with my furls. I have no problem. I hold it at the balance point. Yes, they are balanced. My first favorites were the Susan Bates soft handles. I still use them from time to time. I use mostly Furls now.

I loved Susan Bates hooks then found Furls Streamline and they are now my favorite. But I do also use Boyle for certain things. I got 1 streamline, one oddesey, and one of the wooden ones to decide which I liked best before I got a full set.

For yyyyeeeeaaaarrrrssssss, I used nothing but the plain aluminum boye hooks. I had the crochetmaster set that was all sizes up to a K, then I had probably a hundred extras in various sizes. I started having arm/elbow/wrist/hand pain. Even my shoulder was having issues. I've tried to use Susan Bates hooks over and over and just couldn't. Don't care for clover amour (gasp!), but I found the Tulip Etimo hooks and I've never looked back! My husband bought me the gray set with the case and accessories and I rarely use anything else. I do own some hiya hiya aluminum hooks, which I use when all my tulips are busy (which is are because i have 2 complete sets). The hiya hiyas are comparable to the Boye ones, but a little smoother and nicer. But the tulips are perfection - sharp point, deep enough throat, sssuuuupppppeeeerrrr slick, nice handle. I'm a snob now. I love the looks of all the pretty wood and resin hooks, but I just can't make myself pull the trigger when I know I won't really use them.

Hi Jen, great hooks review. Like you, I’ve so many different hooks and brands and am in love w/them all but, my absolute fav is the Ommi, I use the I/P mostly, they’re smooth, light weight and easy on my hand.
I’ve had surgery on both hands so, I’m quite choosy abt hooks. Yes, the resins are beautiful but delicate so be very careful. I’ve had one of them roll off the sofa unto the wooden floor but was intact when I picked it up, but that was a “P”, my niece has also dropped my Ommi 4mm on the floor and broke it.
    Again great review. Take care.

I started with the plain aluminum hooks and a few years ago I upgraded to the Boye hooks with the pink grip and I also caught it on clearance at Walmart lol since then I bought a very cheap set from WISH and I do mean cheap. They have the hard plastic handles and metal hooks and I really like them because they are so light weight. I usually grab my Boye hooks because of carpal tunnel and arthritis. Buuuut recently I've been watching reviews and I have found several sets that I want to try because I've also started Tunisian crochet and I went down the crochet hook rabbit hole lol You're information in this video is making it easier to choose what I'm looking for. You gave different and more information than a few other creators I follow. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with us.

My weird quirk is that I almost exclusively use Clover hooks, but when using the YarnArt Flowers cakes, I have to use a 4mm aluminum Susan Bates hook or it just feels weird. I have tons of other hooks including some Furls and some hand made hooks but I never use them.

My favorite hooks starting out were the Susan Bates Quicksilver. They were a little more heavy in your hand and had a great point. I have had these almost 40 years and still reach for them. I also just purchased Tulip hooks and am getting use to them. I’m not sure if I like the feel of the rubber grip it just may be something I need to get used to.

My stort with crochet hooks is short; Pencil gripper I believe that shorter/lighter hooks feels nor comfortable for that, I started with no brand all metal then tried clover amour then tulip etimo and liked both so very much that I spent a small fortune on them and bought 32 clovers and 16 tulips.
And that’s it for me. 🥰😅
