    Hi Florian, I appreciate how you incorporate the feedback from the comments. I think you are drawing in many sailing newbies and non-sailors, and it's great to see that you are explaining concepts like the different sail types for a better understanding. Well done!
    One suggestion: When you share your screen, you use a tool to show only a part of the screen. However, when you jump ahead with time predictions, it's essential that we can see it to visually follow along with what kind of prediction you are using: +12 hours vs + 24 hours, etc. So, please ensure you share enough of the screen so we can all see the dates and times next time. Thanks!

    Despite all the records, I would still love to know more about Jingkun Xu. To me, what he’s accomplishing is absolutely incredible and deserves more recognition than the 24-hour records. It would be fantastic if your videos could occasionally include updates about the sailors in the lower rankings. For me, the real victory in this race is simply finishing

    Hi Florian,
    I am interested in knowing a bit more about how the sailors manage their sleep. When I am doing overnighters especially solo, I use my phone timer on between 20-25 minutes where I try to nap in between when the timer goes off I get up check everything AIS etc sails chart plotter. Then lie down again. I try also to bank a little sleep during the day using the same method. But anyway if I do 2 nights of this I am absolutely wrecked and it actually takes a few days to recover. I am in awe of how anyone could sleep on a boat tearing along at 25 it's. It blows my mind. Anyway I would love to know their secret of how they manage to do this for 3 months straight.

      These individuals are a rare breed nowadays. They are highly tolerant of all kinds of adverse conditions regular people wouldn't be capable of handling. I think each sailor has a personal way of managing sleep and rest time but it's also a bit of a mystery to me. Would be interested to know as well.

    Especially the oldest one (big Jean). In this year's compettition a favorites in the latest generation of Imocas are in the lead.
    I have been following how the Imoca class boats have been improved in recent years and i have a question. What is now the source of
    electric power and what is the installed power on board ?

  • @DeanGroovy
    @DeanGroovy 2 дні тому +1

    I'll add to the mentions of the sail explanations - good stuff! I was wondering about the IMOCA rules around technology; it seems like a mix of some technology allowed (GPS, weather reports, etc.) and some not allowed (electric winches, electric motors to move the keel). Could you please explain some of those rules and maybe the reasoning or history behind them? Thanks!

    That developing high which will push the frontrunners isn't just a bus, it's a high-speed maglev train! That should drive them through possibly close to the Kerguelen Islands if the forecast holds.

    I understand the different Jib sizes but i don’t fully understand having multiple jibs up at the same time. Wouldnt the smaller jib be taking the wind out of the bigger jib and then compromising the larger jibs power.

      I'm always thinking about Louis and what he has to contend with on his yacht. I've never seen a repair job like the one he did. I didn't think it was even possible before he did it. He literally kept the boat from breaking into two pieces. I hope it will hold up for the rest of the race but there's no denying he is taking a big risk. His confidence is high though and if I understood him well he intends to increase his speed. That's how sure he is of the repair work he did. /fingers crossed

    A question for a future show: the routing software used by participants, does it rely only on weather forecasts? Is data from actual measurements used by the software (either from the boat or other sources) in any way (besides being input from the forecasts)?

    • @deerfootnz
      @deerfootnz 3 дні тому +7

      Each boat will generate what are called polar diagrams. These are data of boat speed against wind angle for every wind speed. They take alot of sailing to generate and are constantly updated from real data as they sail. The sailors routing software takes this polar data and the weather information downloaded each day to make a prediction as to the fastest way forward. Each sailor will then choose to go that way or more likely their own modified interpretation of that. The polar target speeds are also displayed prominently in the cockpit as a %, so the sailors know how well they are doing against "target boat speed" when trimming sails etc.

      @@deerfootnzgreat explanation- the hard bit is the interpretation of the advice and the execution

    • @deerfootnz
      @deerfootnz 2 дні тому

      @davidtydeman1434 tell me about it! Also note that weather prediction in places where there is not much measurement is notably worse. So forecasting for the Bay of Biscay is very good, but for the Southern Ocean... just nowhere near as accurate. The models work reasonably well at the macro scale, but there may also be local weather features that may be quite intense which the models can miss entirely. The models also do not do well when local thermal or orographic effects are prominent. They are not good at predicting the ITCZ/doldrums/pot au noir for example and especially features within that.

    I thought most of the filers didn’t have any spinnakers because they don’t go that downwind / have too much relative winds... like multihulls do ? Do you know if any foiler actually have A sails?

    • @SeawolvesTV
      @SeawolvesTV  2 дні тому +1

      yes a most have at least one A sail on board still for light winds

    • @davidtydeman1434
      @davidtydeman1434 2 дні тому +1

      Remi you are correct these high performance boats don’t sail directly downwind but instead they zig zag downwind because it is faster. That means that instead of having a traditional spinnakers being a huge sail which looks like a filled balloon designed to push the boat along many high sped modern boats have sails that look like a cross between a spinnaker and a jib. These are are called Assymetric or A sails. As Florian said many are much bigger than a normal jib and therefore the back corner of the sail extends a long way past the mast. On Imocas there is a pole at the back of the boat to attach them to. There are multiple sizes of A sails depending on wind strength and wind angle. a sails and J sails can be used in combination. Imoca rules have a limit on how many sails you can take. Sailors must choose exactly what shape for each sail and which combination of sails is best.
