I like this EQ as well and this is a nicely presented listen to the EQ in use. One thing that would be a cool add to this video is if you were to show a case where switching in the proportional curve helped you get a result you really enjoyed. Cheers.
So I've been trying to wrap my head around the differences between this and all PA's other mastering EQs. How would you characterize PQ's sound vs something like AMEK 250? I know the AMEK 200 and 250 are slightly different from eachother in terms of low end tightness. Then there's also the LISA, and the PASSEQ, and on and on. Would be good to have an idea of when to reach for each different plugin
Hey brother, firstly, thank you for watching. It’s a great question, and a question I’m not sure I can definitively answer. A lot of it is to do with subjectivity and personal taste. Over time and a lot of use I have developed a taste for certain EQs in certain situations. The PQ is a great broad stroke mastering EQ and gets me in the ball park very quickly tonally. The Passeq has a really nice posh beefy low end. Lisa is obviously dynamic, and so has its place in certain situations. I use the Ameks in digital mode as they sound really nice when they’re clean and more recently I have used them for more subtractive surgical EQ on masters. The Soma has such a beautiful 5k and top end. So basically they all have their uses for me but those uses came from a lot of experimentation and may not be useful to other people in the same way.
Thanks for a great review, which I like it. But elsewhere some other reviewer dissected this EQ on plugin Doctor and found there is literally no character that is emulated like the hardware and is as transparent as the ProQ3. Wondering what would be your opinion on this. I would like to buy it if it has any analog characteristics at all. Thanks for your help.
Hey buddy, thanks for watching. As you may have seen from my video and my other videos if you happen to watch them, I don’t use Plugin Doctor to make a decision on a plugin. I use my ears and make my choice that way. There’s no right or wrong of course. I guess the best way is to watch what other people think about the plugin and then demo it yourself. Another thing I never do in my videos is say it does or doesn’t sound like the hardware. I also don’t really like saying something does or doesn’t sound like analog. I think way too many people make these judgements when really it’s a totally subjective opinion. Honestly the best thing to do is demo it dude and decide yourself if it fits in with your workflow.
i am not so sure anymore if there are any differences at all in the virtual EQ world, except the curve and the boost level... I did a test myself with 5 virtual eqs and the SPL EQ aswell... matched their curves with plug in doc, and they all sound the same... you can find the testvideo on my YT-page.
Didn't think I was going to need this, as I love PAs emulation of the Soma so much. This gives a similar sheen, but it also has a creaminess that is not better but different to the Soma. It's a colour that I need in my palette now that I've hear it 🤔
Hey thanks for watching. They're different animals in my opinion. After using both for a few weeks now on multiple masters, I personally think the PQ is more transparent. I love them both and thankfully, we do not have to choose one or the other and compare them side by side. If I had a favourite, at the moment it is the PQ, but of course that could change next week haha
I have both the hardware and the plugin. I love using the hardware, but the plugin is a pain in the butt. Why oh why do plugin designers think it is a good idea to make the plugin look exactly like the hardware? It's totally unnecessary. The plugin would be far easier to use if the interface for the plugin was designed based on convenience and ease of use in the digital domain. STOP making plugins look like the hardware, please! Use the incredible possibilities of the digital domain to capture the essence of the hardware. But the plugin interface should be completely redesigned for ease of use in the digital domain. That applies to any plugin emulation of hardware.
PA gui is just getting worse and worse. It's a straight up shitshow at this point. We don't need colors and different looking pots on hardware because it's all muscle memory. Operating a plugin like this is a nightmare. And what's up with not displaying values as you set them? Not even going to go into not being able to type them in. All of these things would add very little to R&D costs amd would make a huge difference, there's basically no defending these glaring omissions in 2022.
I like their GUI very much it's more realistic and gives me the feeling of working with the hardware, i think people who want the digital look with the analog curve eq should go for kirchhoff eq, but i hope they can update their old GUI with resizable option.
@@aviatedviewssound4798 Nobody wants a digital look, I (and plenty others) want to be able to see what is what at a glance. Ever wonder why nobody complains about SSL channels or the Scheps Omni Channel not having graphs? It's because every bleeding knob looks different and they're extremely easy to tell apart.
@@JoeyFTL oh i get what's you're saying but it's not plugin alliance fault it's the hardware manufacturer's fault, so maybe you wouldn't like to look at the hardware but they're job was to make make a plugin version of the hardware a 1:1 so the eq might just not be for you, there's a lot of others like the gml which is amek 200 or sontec 250 which is amek 250 that can get you in the same ballpark.
@@aviatedviewssound4798 I'm only saying that an alternative gui that appears at the click of a button (like, I don't know, the bx extra unit?..) is a perfectly reasonable expectation from a highly successful plugin company in the light of expected sales and profit. It's almost like they've done this before... Oh yes, because they did. They made three skins for the AMEK 9099 console. Didn't seem to bother them then that the original hardware didn't have a "night mode".

Q I wanted to know
id recommend the TOMO LISA - that is the GYAAAT of EQs
How to get pre-sets to appear in cubase daw drop down?
I’m not sure mate. I don’t use Cubase. Do they not appear then?
Correct
@ oh no. That’s not good.
Great preview. Looking forward to checking this thing out.
Thanks buddy and thank you so much for watching.
Just dropped $90 on this beast, no doubt it'll be my primary EQ for a good while.

I see that too that's why. I'm doing more research I don't want to waste money
Seems to me only purpose of buying hardware emulation
How to i get the mono version?
It does it automatically if you apply it to a mono track.
@@TheCratesMotel I tried that it didnt switch
@@MrFelonyLoc hmmm that’s strange. I’m not in the studio right now. I’ll check tomorrow bro

Hi Conan,
Great video. I've just watched your review of the Amek 250.
How do you think the PQ compares to the Amek 250?

All great points for discussion. Perhaps you could contact PA with your ideas.
