Very good video, two points should be added. There is a small tab on top of the SS cup. This tab needs to line up with the corresponding dimple on the underside of the water pump housing to keep the SS cup from rotating on the shaft after assembly. Also it is easy to miss line up the gear shift spline while placing the lower housing back an to the motor. Make sure the gear shift spline actually gets inserted into the upper linkage or the motor will not shift after assembly. Easy to miss this point if you are not paying attention. Thank you again for the excellent video
wow... what a great video. Garrett, you are a pro, and thanks for getting rid of the fear factor for me... I've done cars but boat engines were a phobia...you make it look so easy.
Glad I could help, James! Really anyone can do a water pump or an impeller; if you've been under the hood of a car, you have a head start. Glad we could help get you started. Lots more Yamaha videos to come, stay tuned! -- Garrett
Thanks would the process be the same for a Yamaha C40PRLV 1997, My warning buzzer sounds after about 10 minutes under load but looks like plenty of water coming out of the top.
What is the purpose of the Yamaha “Chrome pump kit” ? And how does it install compared to the standard kit? It looks as if the chrome cartridge insert is split down the side…. Does it I start into the standard metal pump stainless housing?
Tks for an excellent instruction. I'm having a problem with my 2005 70 hp Yamaha that was tuned up and lower unit dealt with . When turned on at neutral or at low trolling speed, alarm sounds off and doesn't stop until I rev up the engine. Noticed that the water flow off the pee hole is weak initially but gets stronger when revving up. Any ideas of what it could be? Mechanic back in and could not find any major issues. Would appreciate a reply
The metal impeller housing had a hole in it at 8:40 - Is there not some alignment required for that hole? Mine came out attached to the plastic housing so I never had them separated in the first place but I did notice the hole in the metal and wondered if it's placement is critical. Great video. Thanks for posting
If it's Installed correctly and everything is in good shape. The pump may be doing what's supposed to. Take the plastic fitting out the end of the water line make sure it's clear. If that doesnt do the trick ...You may have some circulation issues...blockages like sand or corrosion build up... I'd start by pulling the thermostat housing off and make sure it's opening properly and also look for evidence of sand and corrosion obstructions. !
I've got a 2002 60LTRA and I need to replace the water pump base that you speak of. However, I can't get the base off! Can you tell me how to remove this?
What's the piece that goes across behind the cup? I have a 100 4 stroke and mine is corroded and cracked and trying to find out what it is it has a rubber then the alloy
That is the damper seal guide and the damper seal -- commonly overlooked but should be replaced too if the guide part is corroded out like the one in this video. I just replaced this on my F90 Four Stroke - go to boats.net and look at the parts breakdown for your motor, I believe the parts you will need is DAMPER, SEAL 688-45375-00-00 and GUIDE, SEAL DAMPER 663-45376-00-94 but check to make sure. Best of Luck!
The question I have. How serious is it that I recover the small rubber pieces that broke off, of the water pump impeller while running the engine, I had water hooked up to try and get it to pump, it would not pump, so I replaced the impeller pump, It pumps good now, but I'm worried where the rubber pieces went.
Nice reference video, You did not note cleaning the bolts, using Loctite 572 on the bolt threads, apply grease to the water tube and impeller fins. The unit should be in neutral gear and tested by turning the prop shaft freely to confirm that it is in neutral. The shifter has a mark that the pin needs to match to confirm neutral. You should take that prop off for this job. Lastly, a slight wiggle on the shifter can help with installing the unit. People should be told to consult their service manual and use this video as a reference. Not a guide for their motor. A brass hammer should be used for that impeller key but the position it should be in is correct. A little penetration oil and using a dull chisel to hit the key at the bottom will index it out. Then it can be tapped out. Using a punch is difficult and it should be a brass punch.
YOU DID NOT MENTION INSTALLATION OF THE SECOND GASKET BEFORE INSTALLING THE IMPELLER...I was following along step by step and had to waste time uninstalling stuff to get the second gasket in...otherwise very informative video.

Good job not mentioning the gasket above the metal plate. Or how youre supposed to line up tge cup with your housing.
Great video. Gave me the confidence to do the work myself. Thanks.
Any videos on that water pick up tube replacement? Found mine disconnected today

Thank you so much for the video. Exactly what I needed to get my boat running again.
Great video. Only problem is around 8:18 they forgot to mention the second gasket that gets installed between the plastic housing and the metal plate.
Thanks for pointing that out! I had the same issue and had to remove the impeller (which is pretty tight) to install the second gasket.
Yeah, I was WTF! when I seen that🙄
I missed that one under the trim tab today..... It's been 25yrs since I did a Mid size yamaha.

Where does the tube running from the lower unit to the engine housing hook to in the engine housing
My water pump base needs replaced. How do remove the oil from the lower unit?
hi can you please tell me is the water leaked ? because that impeller teared ?
great video, the water from my engine comes out in flots. I have also changed the impeller and the gaskets. Mercury orion 60 hp from 2016
You put the tear in there probably in with the screwdrivers underneath of it the tear was on the bottom where the screwdrivers were
And just like that the Woodruff key comes out! Yeah Right been working on mine two days it's not budging!
Very good video very professional👍
Where does the large O ring go that comes in the kit?
Under the lower housing that he didnt remove

Where can i get the water seal for the water pump housing??
2007 Yamaha 2 stroke 90TLR where can i find the pump kit? or is it the same one?
What gear put boat in
What grease do you recommend for the job (concern about rubber parts)
Marine grease

Hi
My Yamaha 90 is 4 stroke
Is it the same torque value of 29 ft lbs?

Did you find out?
yamahaevo - I did not hear back or find out whether hole is significant
@@condor5635 The hole must be aligned to the plastic housing.
@@condor5635 Not only is it a hole, there is a tiny metal lip up which must be aligned.
I replaced the water pump as instructed but the new pump isn’t pumping very much water out the tell tale. What could be wrong?

What gear should the motor be in prior to starting the pump replacement? Neutral or Forward?
Neutral

Remove the bolt holding the two water intake screens off the lower... they're probably in there.
Where does the water line off the lower unit go to?
Old speedo, I just cap it off

I wondered what happened to Forrest Griffin after the UFC. He's fixing boats now. =D
WHY IS THE PAPER GASKET ON THE BOTTOM THEN WHEN YOU PUT THE IMPELLER ON, ITS ON TOP????
Why is there oil leaking out of my lower unit
Whoa - I cannot believe you did all of that but did not address the corroded guide seal damper and the rubber seal damper right behind the water pump!
They dont come with the kit!
I have to change the change rod of my engine as it does
WHAT HAPPENED WHEN i PUT THE MOTOR IN GEARAND NOTHING HAPPENS - NO REVERSE NO FORWARD
thank you

A 20 gallon trash can makes an excellent lower unit stand. Drag up a lawn chair and you're good to go.
Good
Put it in the water and just like that the motor seizes because you didn't reconnect the pickup tube.
I thought all that pickup tube did was make the speedometer work...
@@802brundogsaint
Danny's joking. lol
Well, at least I hope he is... that water pickup is only for the speedometer.
re-attach the water tube after you install the lower end. this video also skips that step.
Don't respond to ANY questions asked here? Way to grow the otherwise decent channel. Oh yeah you forgot the water line!😮
Just Like That
The cup must be installed into the housing first! And aligned with the slot in the housing so it does not spin very critical.
Have you heard of comedian Tommy Cooper? Look him up. "Just like that"!!!
