I spent thousand hours in the air at 2014 which is the legal limit. And thats in the air only without ground time. Our job is so repetitive. It is stressful, always in rush always racing the clock. You need to be fully aware always if something goes wrong. Nothing goes wrong 99% of time but still at the end of a 12- 15 hour shift you are repeating same thing for 4th 5th time that day and you are trying to keeping your focus do not miss anything. That 60 seconds of announcement could be the only time this crew relaxed and had fun whole day and believe me they deserved it. There is nothing unprofessional about making a boring announcement funnier and have a little smile.
1000 hours is not the legal time limit of flying in a year. the maximum legal amount of time someone’s a lot of fly per day for commercial purposes according to the FAA is eight consecutive hours. after eight consecutive hours rest. With that in mind and without ground time I would say the maximum commercial flight time in the air would be about 2,000 hours.
This is Captain Barry Love on the Boeing 717 at AirTran Airways. I flew with him quite a bit back in the DC-9 days and he's genuinely one of the nicest people on the planet. He even let us borrow his personal car on a Washington DC layover and we almost got it towed due to not noticing the afternoon time restriction while parking on the national mall. Great to see him again doing his Captain Love thing.

Years ago, before 9-11, i flew from the UK to the USA and the guy was doing the usual announcements about safety and stuff and then he just suddenly broke and said "but to be honest, in the event of a sudden crash, most of you will be screaming and falling thousands of ft. We hope your denture records are up to date." Everyone just started laughing. Few weeks later, 9-11 happened. Never flew again.
I was on a flight once when the captain tried to do this. He said something like “My name is Micky Mouse and I’ll be your captain today” But it was just awkward 😂 no one really took notice and he didn’t even have a happy voice or anything. It was just super awkward 😂
They were flying to Buffalo?!? What gives? If I were a passenger on that plane, I would have checked my documents again--I was sure we were supposed to be heading for Alderaan.

Well, piloting can be fun, but it is also A LOT of hard work. Pilots have to fill out A LOT of paperwork, make sure everything about the aircraft is working correctly, and there are no faults or anything else that may indicate a problem. It is also HOURS of sitting behind that cockpit windshield with nobody to talk to but the F. O (or captain if you are the F. O), air traffic controllers, and occasionally the FAs (but that's usually only if one of the passengers is really ill or is refusing to follow the rules). I want to be a flight attendant, because flight attendants get to interact with a whole plane full of passengers, as well as the other crew members. I'm well aware of the hard work flight attendants do during the flight, and the intense training they have to go through before they can fly.

When the flight crew mixes professionalism and humor, you get more relaxed passengers that might normally cringe at the thought of flying. Safety of the aircraft, its passengers (sometimes cargo) and of the crew is never compromised when this type of humor is in play. Kudos for bringing a smile to my face and I am sitting in my living room and not 30000 feet above the Atlantic....for once.
