One thing I loved about Asia Martin as captain is that she NEVER had to LOOK BACK at the squad. Eyes straight ahead with TOTAL confidence in what she was doing and that the squad was doing what they needed to be doing also. That alone made her so intriguing to watch.
When she said, "I'm here, and I need you to get here." That was soo real! Many would take that as arrogance or in a negative way. I love that she knew her worth and knew what she could do to encourage her members to meet that standard. It's not bad for a captain, leader, or even a member to have that level of self-actualization.
I love this interview. One thing that stood out for me, Asia praised the girls before her, recognized Betts as iconic (even though Asia herself is iconic, if not the biggest game changer for Stingettes), and she spoke so highly of HER captain. One thing that has really bothered me about some of the other interviews is that some of the girls didn't really acknowledge their captain's contribution or influence on them. I think it brings joy to a captain to hear how they helped/influenced their girls. Plus we only know what you say, so speak highly of each other!

Maude Jewel Smith definitely!! When I REALLY started liking KP was after I saw how she handled things at the 50th Dolls celebration. Everyone wanted her to lead, call counts, and she was so humble. She cheered April on and supported her, and fell back. And on the March out she co lead with Dani. Now Dani is a legend herself!!!! My fav. But KP could have very well kept that moment for herself and instead shared it. THAT made me fall in love with her. Like WOW! You’re the most known doll and yet you respect and give recognition to other legends. That’s like a rare type of beauty you know. I definitely believe she is beautiful both in front of the camera and behind the scenes
I love that she recognizes other heavy hitters like Seaera. No matter where she was positioned, your eyes went straight to her. Asia is the truth too, beautiful inside and out, and a true class act.
Slayasia Martin is the reason why I became a Stingettes/SWAC Fan! When I first saw the Stingettes on Bama State Style, I had to see more so I turned to UA-cam and got my LIFE seeing the girls Slay those stands!!
I’m an Asia fan and so looking forward to hearing this interview. I always enjoyed the HBCU bands and dance teams but Asia and KP solidified my love for the culture and now I follow many teams. In my head, Asia is one of the Captains of my Fantasy HBCU dance team.

I went through the audition week but couldn’t make the audition day because of not being fully admitted into the school’s system. ASU don’t play that. She’s really nice but stern in person. ❤️ very talented and beautiful.

This interview was great. She addressed everything we wanted to know in the most graceful way. For the ones who feels like she had an issue with the current team and it's captain, she still gave credit where it's due, but it's not rocket science that past situations and how it was handled wasn't something to take note on because it was, regardless to weather we think it should've or not. It doesn't mean the current team itself still didn't have a great season. All that happened is hopefully a guideline to not repeating the same mistakes. Your faves doesn't have to be everyone else's faves and even in differences, there should be a mutual respect of one's talent.

Without Asia's reign we might have not gotten Amber's which gave us Hurricane Harrington later. Can't disregard her talent just because she's not your cup of tea because she paved the way for the very squad your fawning over. She gave the credit where it's due. @2021 they are what people call Silent Killers. They’re captivating because they’re veiled in mystery and wonder. There are so many facets to Asia and Janae. I still wanna see a dance video with Asia, Amber, and Janae. Hell they can put Ashley in their too. That’s a powerful lineage of Mother/Daughter captains. They would all eat in the video.
Same, I was a freshman in 2012 when Asia and KP were crabbing. I literally feel I grew with them and watched them blossom into AMAZING 2 year captains of their teams. They share the same birthday too. That was all fate 😂.
I absolutely LOOVVEEEEDDDD this interview, but what I loved most was when she unpacked the levels of impact: Good - Great - Legendary - Gamechanger - Iconic - Supernova I will say, as someone who actually stepped with Asia back in middle school, I can attest to the fact that Muva was alwaaayysssss dramatic during performances. Asia knows how to put on a show, honey. Her stage presence is truly unmatched. Remembering those step team performances makes me understand why her main criterion for creating field shows was to tell a story. The year I was on the step team, we were Puppet Dolls, and there was a whole storyline behind our performance. AND Coach Frazier definitely cemented discipline in us, so it’s super cool to see those qualities transferred into her captain years.

That’s why I think dancers should have restrictions with social media. Some of the mystique and creativity is being lost within the craft of HBCU dance. I’m seeing some high school teams style being blended into the collegiate teams.
@@Tristan11406 High schools have always been mini versions of their favorite collegiate dance team. Even when I was in high school (looong time ago) our dance team did counts similar to our nearest hbcu dance line. And his was years before social media even existed.

I honestly damn near wanted to cry at the end of this because I remember the first time I saw her in person which was in 14’ at the Fairburn Day Parade in Georgia. Which was my first year dancing. And I just remember how star struck I was. And now she teaches at my alma mater and that school means so much. I know she is gonna make an impact and more dancers from my high school will dance collegiately. I did not have access to a dance teacher outside of band practice. So I’m excited for the ones who will come during Asia’s era as a dance teacher at Frederick Douglass High School.

And I just remember how star struck I was. And now she teaches at my alma mater and that school means so much. I know she is gonna make an impact and more dancers from my high school will dance collegiately. I did not have access to a dance teacher outside of band practice. So I’m excited for the ones who will come during Asia’s era as a dance teacher at Frederick Douglass High School.

I recently discovered the Stingettes with Janae as captain(I am GLAD youtube recommended one of their videos to me and now I have binge watched so many videos!) and man they are everything! I understand that Ashley was strict but it seems like 2013 was a much better year for the Stingettes, uniforms and all! No shade!! Keke had style and had fun while dancing. Just my opinion!
