So glad you're back - I love how simply you explain things! It helps us here in the UK who didn't get lessons in US constitutional history get a better grasp on how it all works.
Mickeleh! Thanks for your review of Day For Night... I watched it on your recommendation and I'm glad I did. Glad to see you making videos - I like the way you think!
Dear Micheleh, wonderful to see you return to UA-cam. I am a media and music lecturer and I regularly played your videos on music in the cloud to students. I appreciate your wisdom and your objectivity, and I hope to hear more from you soon.
I love how those who can't distinguish between a corrupt degenerate and a legitimate candidate will now try to lecture us on bias. Good Video, Mickeleh.
larry moore jr I don't understand this at all. Trump does not believe in free speech. He said the Khan gold star family had no right to criticize him. They are Americans. That's exactly what they have. He kept reporters that he did not like out of his rallies. The reporters he did not like were the ones that did not bow done to his 'wonderfulness' To me Trump has no regard for free speech. I simply don't understand your perspective.
That's a very hard question, Sammy. Trump doesn't have any political philosophy to work from. Just a sense of ego and invulnerability. Who knows what his instincts will push him toward?
I think that the elections will be seriously messy in the future, no matter what the electoral college does. The current system is broken and more and more people are becoming aware of that fact. It is just a question of how broken it needs to be until it will not be possible for the current beneficiaries to pass it off as a working system anymore. At what point will the voters demand and work for actual change? Overturning Citizens United would be a good start. (Also, looks like you are channeling Steve Jobs with your outfit there. :D)
I'm glad to see you back, even in these dark and murky times. I value your analysis and insight, thank you. I'm fortunate not to live in the US, and I really feel for those who do, particularly those who might be targets of hate crimes.
Great video as always, but please take this criticism as a fan and constructive criticism as it is intended: the thumbnail you have is very generic and I passed it by a few times in my feed thinking it was a click bait trump video not realizing it was from you at a glance. Most of your other thumbnails have you in them and a great way to know it's yours, just afraid others may have overlooked it as I did at first and it getting lost in the sea of other youtube videos. Maybe add your logo to it if not your photo? Just friendly suggestions from a fan to make sure we don't miss it :) . Keep up the great work as always!
Very good video. I hate Trump, and I'm terrified of his Presidency, but I've felt incredibly reluctant to hop onboard with this "Faithless Electors are a good thing" train.
If I understand your interpretation of Hamilton correctly ("Hamilton wanted the electors voting instead of the people."), then would it be safe to say that the vote on November 8th by the people should simply be for a political party rather than an individual? Because it appears that if Hamilton wanted the electors to hold the power to elect the president without any allegiance to the people ("They weren't a safety valve, they were a bypass.") there seems little reason to put forth a nominee. Just vote a political party, and let the electors hash it out. At that point all you're voting for an ideology, and it's up to the electors to put forth the person best suited to carry out that ideology. That would turn into a corruption nightmare, in my opinion. But an interesting video, nonetheless!
The key thing to remember (as I'll detail in a video I'm currently working on) is that at the time the Constitution was written, we had no political parties. Most of the framers thought parties were a bad thing. Hamilton says so (Federalist No. 1). George Washington says so (in his Farewell Address ghost-written by Hamilton). Madison thought they were inevitable, but he thought we would have multiple parties, not just two (see: Federalist No. 10). The EC was designed to work in a country that had no parties. But then... Hamilton went ahead and worked to start the Federalist Party. In response, Madison Joined with Jefferson to found the Democratic-Republican Party. As a result, the way you got to be appointed or elected as an Elector was to pledge your loyalty to the candidate nominated by your party. We simply don't have the Electoral College that Hamilton wrote about. There isn't a single election in the history of the country where the Electors functioned the way Hamilton predicted.
May as well scrap the Presidential election and just let 538 electors vote for the Presidency. How about the Presidential nominees bid for the Presidency ? Think about it. If electoral voters can vote against the wishes of the people, they may as well put the Presidency on auction !
Another useful insight. Many thanks. I did think of putting a bet on Trump not lasting four years but in the UK the the bookies are offering such low odds, it's not worth the effort. :D Both our countries need leaders who can increase the thinking amongst the population and reduce the ranting.
Trumps win is not a true democratic win. The people spoke via one vote for one man or one woman. The people wanted Hillary as our president, however the electoral college system supports the possibility that one's vote can count for more than someone else's vote in another state. i.e. your vote can have more influence and power....It just all depends on which state you live in.
The country didn't wake up on the 9th of November and decide racism is cool and acceptable. I would take those reports of hate incidents with a grain of salt considering the number of stories that turned out to be hoaxes already.
***** I of course don't have some kind of running tally, but here is an article talking about many of the early hoaxes and our willingness to believe them wholesale without critical thinking: reason.com/blog/2016/11/11/election-night-hijab-attack-false Do I believe some hate crimes happen because of trumps victory? yes, but I think many on the left have made it into a hysteria that doesn't correspond with reality. "whats an acceptable number of harrassments to you?" I don't think you are being honest with that question. No harassment is acceptable, but sharing misleading information about that isn't helping anyone.
While I agree with most of what you say about the Hamiltonian view of electors, and you posted this back at the beginning of Dec. this idea of Lessig's could have worked if it made the electorate mad enough. The Putin hacking scandal should have energized the media to raise it at least to the level of the Monica Lewinski scandal, but our complacency as believers a country of laws (which seems not to be the case with Trump) is probably going to trip us into having elected a dictatorship. The Republican feeding frenzy will see to that, having already enabled Trump's victory int the great number of under informed low population states where cheaply bought legislators sold out. Realistically we should at a minimum recount every county of every state, eyeing the ones where hacking was most possible. A re-election would be the appropriate way to counter the sell out to Russian style "democracy" that seems to have taken place.
I hear that the GOP is pursuing the line of convincing electors to be faithless electors - in their favour oc. Along with placing (official) ballot drop off boxes in CA, taking away boxes in TX, and introducing a poll tax in FL, it looks as though they'll do anything.
Thier are many different viewpoints on faithless electors that I have heard. The only thing that is consistant is thier are a larger number them normal that are pledging to be faithless. Some say the number is 7 and others say it is 17. Whatever happens hopefully it be enough to end the electoral college once and for all.
OK... If you insist. Auto industry going bankrupt. Saved by Obama (that's a million and a half jobs right there). Housing market tanking. Saved by Obama. Stock market in the toilet. Now at new highs. That's enough for now. Don't want to overload your short term memory.
We will, of course, endeavor to follow the gracious example set by the GOP when Obama won twice-with both a popular and electoral majority. Resist and work tirelessly for Trump's defeat. Get used to that.

Claiming that incidents have increased because of trump and not the clinton smear campaign(which they called the Pied Piper campaign, in their own words) is disingenuous at best. His business practices maybe. His personal rudeness sure. Calling his tweets "bullying" is ridiculous and makes you sound like an emotional-reasoning 'progressive'. This felt like a completely different and far less-wise and far-more emotional and biased mickelah than previous subjects. You came to the most reasonable conclusion(that they can't "save you from trump") despite the ringing bias throughout, so it's not as bad as it could be.
Clearly you didn't watch the video. Because I said the Electoral College wouldn't stop Trump. So... guess what? If I'm wrong, the WILL stop Trump. Are you sure you can't wait to see me wrong?
Yes and I sat through all 8 years and yea we got change, our murder and drug rates are sky high. Unemployment is down because everyone's unemployment ran out. Now they're selling heroin and coke.
Also, the electoral college is legitimate, and if Hillary had won in the same circumstances as Trump, none of you would even be questioning it. The Electoral college gives all states a voice, because overly populated places like NY and CA would win the whole country. It is not the same here in the midwest as it is in NY or CA. We are suffering. How many counties voted Trump, and how many counties voted Hillary?
Thank you for your wisdom and journalistic instincts in these troubled times.
