Rise Against's Tim McIlrath doesn't have this problem with punk anymore
At first glance, it may seem suspect that an acclaimed punk band would be aligned with a Marvel property. But when Rise Against announced their participation in the soundtrack to the comic-motion film Dark Nights: Death Metal, there had to be something special to it. After all, “Broken Dreams, Inc.” is the first new music from Rise Against in three years. But frontman Tim McIlrath saw much more at play here than a comic franchise.
“What I've learned in the process of doing this song and talking to the authors,” he begins, “and talking to the soundtrack people and talking to the artists-it’s that everyone is telling a story, and they're doing it in their own way. We’re all just storytellers.”
McIlrath spoke to Alternative Press about his interest in being part of the soundtrack and his thoughts on the graphic novel format’s ability to resonate. And he gave us an update on how the follow-up to Rise Against’s Wolves was coming along. With 21 years in the punk-rock/hardcore trenches, McIlrath is excited about America’s new political consciousness.

Joe's bass is back on EQUAL footing to the guitars. Awesome. The song's an amalgam of old Rise Against (Unraveling, Revolutions Per Minute, Siren Song) with the evolution of new Rise Against (Appeal to Reason onwards). I've always respected the shit out of Tim, Joe and Brandon, although I haven't been excited for a new Rise Against album in over a decade. I've always been a fan and always supported them on tour, but this is the first time in 14 years that I've been stoked for new Rise Against. The last Rise Against album I was stoked for was the Sufferer and the Witness. Broken Dreams Inc. has Brandon back at blazing speed (I know Breakdown was fast too) and Tim's perfect voice, and the perfect Bad Religion backup harmonies. Legendary bands always evolve their sound and I'm not against Rise Against doing it. I am however glad that this song is unlike many of their most popular singles like Savior.

      The 2 ᶯᵈ part , of the “ Bridge ” ( Pre “ Break-down ” ) :
      ♫ Are you , along ( Hey ! ) ;
      just for , the ride ( Hey ! ) ? ♫
      ♫ Keep , all hands ( Hey ! ) ,
      & feet , inside ( Hey ! ) ♫
That part , always gets me ·

I loved it, the music video and then the actual song itself.

Rise Against is the biggest political band to emerge from the post 9/11 punk scene, on Fat Wreck Chords. Rise Against, Anti-Flag, Against Me! were signed to majors after all three released two albums on Fat and all bands got immensely popular, but Rise Against hit it bigger than anyone could have imagined. They now headline arena tours and their music is on mainstream radio stations. The point of what I'm getting at is that Tim, Joe, and Brandon are phenomenal musicians and got popular from the songs that I do not particularly enjoy, but respect. Broken Dreams Inc. is Rise Against mixing the old with the new. It's fast, it's loud, and it's fucking good. Joe's bass is finally back to being on EQUAL footing as the guitars just like their best old shit from the first 3-4 records. And Brandon's drums are back to being fast as fuck. I'm so stoked for this new album as I haven't been excited for new Rise Against in over a decade, but I am excited now. Broken dreams, Broken Dreams Inc.

    “ Broken Dreams , Inc. ” is a long-awaited , fast-tempo & well-resonating song.
From my perspective , it could be about how people with ‘ shattered dreams ’ would band together - through a form of collective action / activism - to try & change this current ‘ restrictive ’ political climate. Metaphorically speaking , “ the playing field ” is un-level , so that would make for a difficult attainability , of the often-repeated “ American Dream ” .
Life is hard , as it is ; & ‘ a crushed dream ’ is just another cliché , of life. What fascinates me , is how something as “ seminal ” as ‘ a destroyed dream ’ can become an impetus , for change. It's like humanity have been shown 2 ways , & both are up , for the taking. Some would fight the good fight ; while others would side with the devil. Hence , the saying “ All super-heroes & villains are born , of broken dreams ” . The dichotomy / polarization , can be astounding : 2 different paths could arise , from 1 single out-come.
In life , we need to remember that each of us has been given a “ free will ” to act & do , as we please - for a fixed term. There's a finality , to our life-spans ; & along the way , we are forced to make some challenging choices. As cheesy as this might sound , it's the choices we make , that define us ; & shape who we , really are. For those who sub-scribe to the idea of an “ After-life ” ; & believe with certainty in “ the Here-after ” , there will be ‘ a reckoning , of deeds ’ , on “ Judgment Day ” .
To summarize - in these trying times - it's entirely up to us , whether we want to be :
    • a “ super-hero ” vs. a “ villain ”
    • an “ optimist ” vs. a “ defeatist ”
    • a “ hope-ful ” vs. a “ despairing ” individual
I have always considered Rise Against a thinking-man's Punk Rock band ; & ‘ bonus points ’ to them , for actually caring about “ societal change ” . Album-wise , I'm as stoked as other fans , for their next full-length release. For a band with a growing fan-base , chart-topping albums & sold-out venues ; I must say that listening to their social commentaries have always been a form , of ‘ re-education ’ , for me.
    Thanks , for the amazing musician-ship , story-telling & song-crafting ·

Great video. I've been playing this song on repeat since it released. Just a small edit needs to be made in your description, Death Metal is a DC Comics book not a Marvel book.

I'm a big RA fan, I love the new track, I just wish it didn't hit so close to home. I might not agree with all of RA's politics, but I can respect it and the change that is desperately needed for this country. Looking forward to their new work.

My one concern with voting, and why I didn't vote, is because of uncertainty. I see so much stuff trashing this candidate, and then this candidate goes and trashes the other guy, and so much back and forth just kinda leads me to be unsure of who's truly in the right. Even doing research, I get kinda apprehensive, because what if this one site is intentionally biased towards that particular candidate, or something? Do I regret not voting? Kinda. But whenever I thought about wanting to vote, doubt answered it. "What if the guy I vote for turns out to be terrible?" "What if things just get worse because you voted?" These primarily kept me from voting.
So how do you get past these doubts? How do you find the right person to vote for?

That makes a lot of sense, I can see why you would feel that way.. We're in the age where theres more misinformation than information going around. It is a lot of work to go through all the crap that's called News nowadays, to actually find facts and non biased statements. Ultimately I think no matter which side you vote for there are going to be drawbacks. Neither side is good or evil, but it's about voting for who you think is less shitty at the time. And you're never going to find totally unbiased news, but you will find some facts here and there that you can go by. I personally think this election, if Trump won we would've gone to a state of catastrophe almost. Because hes not a person who cares about the common man, and that's evident from his behavior and his lack of forethought. Biden isn't much better, but I think hes more reasonable than Trump, hes at least willing to look towards the science and politics than the business. He will probably do some things that are wrong as president, but I wouldn't have voted for him unless I thought Trump wasnt going to lead us to disaster. Because he cares even less about the common man.

Anyone else notice that Story of the Year also released an album called Wolves the same year that Rise dropped an album called Wolves? And both albums have tracks called "Wolves" and "Miracle". I think the universe was trying to tell these 2 bands that they should collab with each other.

Tim is old now lol, I guess I shouldn't expect him to scream, as long as the rawness in the music is back. It was called HardcorePunk back then, but the last 2 records were recorded and mixed so poppy that I don't even consider them punk. RA were a pop punk band for the radio and stadiums in the last 10 years. But you shouldn't make that much money from being a rebel. I hope they really go back now to what that song sounds like.
