The story is an allegory. Around Mexico City there many active volcanoes but one of them is facing a dormant volcano that looks vaguely like an inclined princess. These volcanoes were named after a Romeo and Juliet-esque story from Nahuatl legend of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. Popocatépetl was the greatest warrior in a tribe (imma refer to him as Po from now on) and the chief's daughter Iztaccíhuatl (Iz) was the most beautiful girl in the whole tribe and so it was natural they fell madly in love with each other and asked the chief if they could marry. The chief, wanting to avoid this but without doing so outright, told Po that he could have his daughter's hand if he defeated a Mayan army in Chiapas. The chief assumed Po would fail and he wouldn't have to honor his pledge. Off went Po to glory and after news of fierce fighting came back, someone told Iz that Po had fallen in battle. In that moment, she instantly died of a broken heart. Po, victorious, was already running back to claim his true love's hand but instead he found Iz dead. Tears of rage and loss steamed from his eyes as he took her body outside of Tenochtitlan and laid her there in on top of a mountain while he sat close-by in order to always watch over her. And if you Google "Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl" you will see either the drawing or the two volcanoes, one dormant, shaped like an reclined woman, and snow covered; hithe other angry, very active, and occasionally exploding.
surprised you guys never heard of george lopez, his comedy is very cultural so it'll be funnier to hispanic people especially mexicans, so hes really popular in the u.s, but hes a comedy legend. Most if not every stand up knows who george lopez is
Lol most Mexicans are anything but chill and I love it!!! They're cool, calm, and collected but get them away from a "proper" setting and they turn loose. Nothing but a funny, good time.
on the contrary, as a Mexican American I actually find him overrated. There are way funnier MexAm comedians than him like Jeff Garcia, Paul Rodriguez, Fluffy, Felipe Esparza, George Perez, etc.
Love George Lopez! Please react to more of his stand up. I have to admit, I wondered how much you guys would get of his humor, but you're reactions show we are more alike than we are different! I've lived in the Southwest US all my life and, even though I'm white, I understand most of what he says in Spanish. Understanding the Spanish makes it even funnier. And he's right about the calendars. In fact, the taco shop near my house has a mural of the "Aztec guy with the dead lady" LOL
I watched his "Why you Cryin" special when I was in the military in 2005. I remember sittin in the dayroom laughin my ass off with my latinx friends (I know Spanish and am familiar with the Mexican culture).
Being a Mexican American with Mexican relatives, George Lopez is relatively unknown in Mexico but really well known in the United States. His comedy involves a lot of situations where Mexican Americans can relate. So if you're not from the US, it can be a bit hard to follow along, but I'm happy that Latino comedians are getting notoriety worldwide.
Maybe because I'm Chicano that this hit me as the kind of funny where I can picture mi familia in these situations. We seem to have to make a joke about situations. It makes life better. "Have you seen Eduardo's new girlfriend?" "La de los dientes?" (the one with the teeth?) Already I'm laughing.
the big story about lopez recently was when he tried to act like he spoke for all mexicans and a bunch came out on social media to call him a fake mexican lol.
I'm Mexican in the US. I feel the only thing that makes him funny is the relatableness. I don't think I'd watch him if I couldn't relate lol. Most of the jokes here are something every Mexican American has heard at one point.
I really enjoy watching you guys react to funny stuff, when you guys laugh it's contagious. Lisa Lampanelli is a really funny comedian I think you guys would like. She uses alot of colorful language but very funny. Always looking forward to the next one.
I feel like a lot of this type of comedy doesn't translate 100 percent in Europe. In America, a lot of the population speak at least broken Spanish, or Spanglish. And the Mexican culture is well immersed nowadays.
Fun fact: Pablo used to use an impression of Don LeFontaine in his act as his closing bit. If the name isn't familiar, he's the voice actor with the deep voice that would do all the movie previews that would start with his catch phrase "In a world where..." He and Don became friends and when Don died in 2008 or 9, Pablo took over for him doing those commercials.
George Lopez is a legend. He was all over Comedy Central at one point. Idk what happened. I was pretty young so maybe something happened that I wasn’t aware of. I did move to England though, so maybe his stuff just isn’t as popular or marketable here.
