I am from Andhra. I am mesmerized by this scintillating performance by the great legend Seemangudi sir. My mother Smt. Sita Maha Lakshmi was awarded gold medal for violin solo at Madras Music Academy 1947. Semmangudi sir was one of her three judges.
I bow to the Tamil music lovers who really worship foster and encourage Carnatic music. Regrettable to find our Telugu people appreciation of this great art is not on par with Tamil folks even though many of the great compositions are in Telugu.
Let us not care about those who have negative vibrations sir

This concert is dated April-1997 when Semmangudi was 88+, and is the latest concert by him that I have found on youtube. Is any recording of SSI's singing in August 1998 or later available, when he was in his 90s? His music ripened so beautifully with age, as the saying goes. Just amazing.
What a keerthana and raga vaibhava of the great musician and special reference to violin which nobody can match. Great set of people. Such an era is unimaginable and yu can never see the old rasikas

What a grand master master of our music. Ms Amma as a listener. Grand doyen called her as the empress of music.
Harikambhoji..a sampoorna ragam had a long history!!! ..its origin from the first scales- Mullaipan used by the ancient Tamils(3BCE) with just 5notes.. sa ri ga pa da ( equivalent to C, D, E, G and A in the western notations)., then into Sempaalai, a scale based on seven notes by the addition of two more notes- ma and ni to the pentatonic scale. This Sempaalai is the Harikambhoji. It has a lot of janya ragams associated with it, of which Kambhoji is by far the most famous and frequently sung in concerts. The globally famous pentatonic scale Mohanam is also considered a janya of this ragam.
Here the legend SSI is so expressive of the raga and touched on its various nuances... Beautiful vinyasam..'meppulakai kannatAvu-nappu baDaga virravIgi ' ...swaroms had rhythmical structure n ritually sung to end on the 'samam'...Not lengthy but really proliferated so exclusively..lively !!! pranams to the great soul of the doyen of carnatic music.
The recently listened song in this ragam was 'DhinamaNi vamsha", a Thyagaraja Kriti sung by Late sisters -Smty.T.Brinda & Smty.T Mukta. Of course, many songs listened were in Janyas of Harikhamboji ..say..Bahudhari (Sakala Shanthi Karamu: by Annamacharya), in Tilang("Baja Baja Maanasa" by Kamalesha Vitthaladasa ),in Khamboji ("Emaiya Raama""by Badrachala Ramadas), in Ragam Balahamsa (Parulanu vedanu patita pavanuda' by Thyagaraja) etc.......

It is 1978. I was one among the small circle of friends involved in relishing classical (mainly carnatic ) music. And at that context i observed a knowledgeable citizen from Chennaei ( probably.... then Madras ) --- perhaps a senior Executive of very high caliber has written on the extraordinary musical achievements of Sri SHEMMANGUDI ---in Readers digest Magazine..... the heading probablly says... " tributes to the extra ordinary musical journey of Shemmangudi........ ( i have forgotten a lot of portion of it...)-----. My humble pranaams to this great soul..🙏🙏🙏

Thank you Ranganathan Sar for this magnificent video. Semmangudi was one of the greatest over the years. We remember the great concert we had at Guruvayoor temple during Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar's yearly udayastamana puja once . Semmangudi was even better than ever on that day. Subbalaxmi was also there. V.V. Subramanian was great though T.N. Krishnan was more prefered by Semmangudi . Miss those days badly.
