"there are chapters in the timeline below if you'd like to skip this" Man, are you insane? Why on earth I'd like to skip any thing in yours videos? I really like the way you are transparent with costs. But the best thing in this video is that it's noticeable that you are having a lot of fun, we can see just by your body language, and that make us have fun too. Finally the motor with intake and exhaust, looks like a jewelry.

Detuned it for reliability. The engine can handle 1200 hp. Doesnt mean the transmission/driveshaft can.
Also the car is too old and light (not enough down force) to handle that much power without electronic drivers assists.@@xushenxin

As someone who has owned a 308 and absolutely loves them, I feel that you have a great solution to make them truly wonderful. I do believe that you have made a great engine choice with none that can be better, only different. I would go with the Honda K24 as you have, and because you brought the idea to mind for me. All of the benefits...

I'm definitely in the "I'd be way more stoked on 400hp NA with a 10k rpm redline and a feral VTEC changeover" camp, but it's also not my project and my overall stoke levels remain high. Can't wait to see this thing rip.

    • @bigreddaman5988

@@bigreddaman5988 Like you can't rev high with a turbo? That thing can probably hit 12,000 rpm, that's not enough? NA is for sissies who can't handle real power.

    • @davidyang577
      @davidyang577 3 роки тому +1

400hp NA k24 sounds great except the reality is that engine will be pig to drive as a street car and the type of fuel it will require will be your next practicality issue.
For a road car, as far as practicality and reliability goes. 300hp NA out a k24 is near the limit before it turns into something painful to drive.

I really enjoyed that you let a lot more of your personality out instead of just purely laying out facts. I also liked in the previous episode that you didn’t put on a fake face. You laid it out as it was and that’s an important part a lot of people don’t realize when it comes to these builds. I think this combination makes the most sense. Packaging, weight and power. Maybe an LS but then it doesn't with out huge body and chassis changes. And then serviceability becomes a pain. (Less likely to want to use and want to work on it (No fun in that!!)) I've have K series Honda's, Miata's and now a LS S10. The LS in a 3000lb truck is awesome. But its a pain to work on. This is the right path. Shoot a MR2 with a K Series is a poor man's version. I am glad you are doing this Mike. Hot Rodding has no rules. And with no rules all cars become fun! Godspeed

Your excitement is palpable even through the screen. 👍 Looks great on the stand and I am looking forward to seeing it in the engine bay.
Since you asked us to put alternative engine suggestions in the comments 😆 I would say I'd have thought about one of the Japanese transverse V6s (Honda J35/37, Nissan VQ, Toyota 2GR). Not for any more power, but mainly because you'd get a wider powerband and a little bit better throttle response. You'd have a little bit more weight, but nothing too dramatic (such as an LS or the Audi turbo 5-cyl, which I think still uses an iron block and doesn't give you any noticeable displacement advantage over the K24). These would also come with other potential downsides, such as having a much smaller aftermarket (although for the budget of the K24 build, I imagine you could get custom-specced stuff for those V6s), and I don't know what transmission options would be available that could handle that kind of power (I don't like FWD so I generally don't dig much into the details about transverse engines 😅). Anyhow, hard to argue with a K-series due to its design and depth of aftermarket support.
Oh, and the V6s would definitely sound better than a K-series 😜

An na flat 6 from a subaru . if you want a turbo 900 horses with just pistons and a crank and a lower center of gravity but it's more complex and I think power to dollar ratio is better in the k20 and it is much easier to work on it so great choice for the k20 but I would still end up using the flat 6

Couple of things, Mike. First, I was right in the middle of narrowing the 8.8 for my Vicky when I saw this popped up, soooo, had to stop that to watch this (and my coffee got cold). 2. Spot on on the right tool for the job. LS4 is a lot of weight to compensate for, and as for the sound, personally, I have gotten over the need for the "V8" sound. Mind you, I'm 56 and grew up on that sound. But the sound of Ken Blocks Hoonitruck was enough to sell me on Turbo 6's and 4's. I'll bet this is gonna sound like a REALLY pissed off Rally car! I can't wait to see it paired with the transmission!

I won’t say it makes more sense from a purely logical/engineering standpoint, but here’s an engine option I bet you didn’t think of that would be absolutely killer, and hey it’s Italian and sounds amazing too: ALFA Romeo 24V V6 3.2 or 3.0 modified. They come in transverse layout arrangements and a shop I used to work at in Seattle worked with a South African builder to turn them into 3.7 400+hp NA monsters. The shop in ZA runs them with spooly bois on a GTV6 with around 650 at the wheels. It’s significantly lighter than the Ferrari setup and still has very special sound. However as stated I won’t argue it makes more logical sense. I love what you’re doing with this build!

The new engine is an absolute menace and love how u have profiles in your head for setups u can use for the engine either street or stupid fast! Also u paint the manifold in black or some to hide the awful stainless gloominess along side with the welds, would definitely match with carbon fiber piece on the side!

This is epic, old school Ferrari with a reliable, lightweight, high power Japanese engine? Makes perfect sense to me.

The motor looks so cool with the plenum and turbo mounted!

The answer that makes sense is always kswap. But me personally given an open cheque book budget would go something like a 3.7 busso v6 with supercharger. For no other reason than sound. It would cost more, be heavier, harder to package, make less power, be less reliable at that much lower power level and cost way more to maintain. But sound. But also you are 100% correct. No other engine makes more sense than kswap.

Wish you just did a 2min cinematic outro of just the engine towards the end. I would never get bored.

Vw 2.0 16v head combined with 1.9 dieselblock could handle the heat, it is what is used in rallycross and 1/4 mile

While I agree that the K is perfectly matched with this build just because you asked, a Volvo 5cyl would have a been awesome to see and hear in here.

I’m a huge Ferrari fan. I’m currently looking for a 308 for my fun, inexpensive collection I have assembled over the last 5 years. Currently I have a 944 turbo, 928S4, an original stock bug eye WRX and a one owner California car 1978 Mercedes 280CE. I know I’m all over the place and that’s what makes it fun for me. My hesitation up to this point is the reliability and service of the 308 but have convinced myself that’s part of ownership of these cars and a motor swap especially a LS would be blasphemous. I actually snickered when I read the title to your vid. I kinda laughed but I was curious (because it wasn’t an LS swap like every other project car on here). You absolutely won me over man, great idea! I love it and can’t wait to see more! I almost forgot to subscribe and smash the like button! Good luck can’t wait to see the rest, thanks!

VR6 Turbo! Yes... only because they sound awesome... But not as reliable as a K. K is the better choice.
What are you doing for shift linkage?
