There was once a tape in circulation of a complete concert version of Candide from around this time with Madeline Kahn, Irra Petina (the original Broadway Old Lady), Alan Arkin and a different tenor as Candide. The great interest was that it used Lillian Hellman's original book, but with some of the additional music that had been cut on Broadway; I remember how witty Kahn was in the dialogue scenes. I'm in that small minority of folks who believe the show has never really made sense since Hellman withdrew her book; among other things, Candide was originally written as a satire on contemporary (i.e. 1950s) life in the U.S., disguised as a European-style operetta. This means that it's less of an exception in the sequence of Bernstein's musicals than initially appears: On the Town, Wonderful Town, West Side Story and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue are all set in America. (And remember that WSS and Candide were written concurrently, with some numbers moving from one score to the other.)
