Drop In is a good feature. Don't give it access to people you don't want to drop in on you. Use it the same way you would with a room monitor for infants and young children. It's intended to work like a video intercom.

That's exactly why I am watching this video right now. My grandma just had a fall and we want to be able to check in on her to make sure she is doing ok, and if not be able to rush over right away. However, is he saying that Amazon can also "drop in" on my grandma? Because that would be weird. As long as it's only people who are supposed to be checking on her, then that's what I am looking for.

yes I would (if it ever comes to UK that is!!)
love the idea of it, and will only get better with updates.
just to defend "drop in", you can disable it, as a lot of people wouldn't want it, but imagine if you have a friend or relative who is prone to illness or who has dementia etc etc. they would be glad to be able to see that one...or a baby monitor like you mentioned...so you don't have to utilize drop in, but would be very handy in some circumstances

First off I love your reviews always find them helpful and thanks for always being so helpful. I thought the same thing about drop in but it proved to be highly helpful for my mother who is caring for my father who is unable to move on his own anymore. She can go to her garden or run an errand now and easily check in on him and with a voice command he can call her. Its proven to be very helpful for them. Baby cams have short ranges and Nest Drop- cams have poor intercom abilities compared to the Echo Show. So I have to say drop-in is extremely helpful in a small amount of cases such as ours and we love it (who wouldve thought).

  • @reggiehil

A couple things... If you say the command "show youtube ( whatever you are searching)" it will in fact give you a list of about 30 search results. If you just say "play youtube..." it will just play the top result. Lastly, you don't need only another Echo Show for video calls. If you have the Alexa app on your phone you can video chat from an Echo show to a phone and vis versa. It's works very well...

  • @DrStinkbomb

Drop in is awesome. We use it in our home as an intercom system with Echo Dots in multiples rooms. Love it. And if someone in a room needs privacy they just tap the MUTE button and you can't drop in on them. If you drop in and they don't want a drop in, they just ask Alexa to stop drop and mute.

  • @mechamania
    @mechamania 6 років тому

Your fat-shaming notwithstanding -- I'd just say that Alexa's a bit more "thicc," "in person," than might have been imagined -- I'd rather it have that footprint. That bass-droppin' base makes it less easy to knock over and then watch your old $230 free-falling -- in slow motion -- throughout a 4.5' drop to a ceramic tile floor below, which would more easily be the case, if the case weren't so thicc as to be less stable and less visible -- especially when the chosen color is often meant to match its (white kitchen, in my case) surroundings. The size seems a _nearly_ perfect one, at 3.5" X 4.5", which is close to square.
(By the way, the page not only shows the side of the device, albeit at a 3/4 angle, but it also shows the device's dimensions pretty prominently, right in the middle of the page. The angle might obscure the thiccness, but the dimensions don't. Plus, I hear vertical stripes are thinning, if it's that important and you wanna get creative with some masking tape, a ruler, some scissors, and a can of spray paint (in a neon color that matches the main color of your room, for greater visibility... ).
That's my reasoning, but I can understand others' objections, especially considering that it _could_ be nearly flat (less than an inch, anyway), with wider speakers and a rubberized, X-shaped base, with a swivel-and-tilt "kickstand," for instance.
(OK, so it'd "only" be $130, not $230, because I just ordered it (on July 18), with an Alexa-only extended Prime Day deal, to replace the exact Echo Dot with which I placed the order, like a worker building a robot that will do one's job. Muhahahahaha! 😈😈😈)

This product is so redundant. My iPhone 5s can do everything that thing can, in addition to being a phone and having more functionality. Even ignoring the creepy invasion factor of this, which most tech has anyways, it's useless to have. At least with a phone you can cover the camera and move it where you don't want it if needed. And Drop In, is ridiculous. #OpenBorders I guess, even in your own home. Great review, it got the points across.

As of this date, August, 2018 UA-cam no longer works due to a dispute between Amazon and Google. Maybe they will work it out sometime in the future. Also, you can say "Alexa, turn your screen off" and the screen will go black after a few seconds until the next time you say "Alexa".

The DROP IN feature could be great for employers who have remote staff members. During certain work hours, the employees would need to be at their desk and be available for Drop In's, just like an employer would, on site. I think the main reason they added it is for parents to be able to check in on their toddlers. It's very much worthwhile in such cases.

I know this is an old review, but as Amazon is closing out its Gen1 Shows for a very low $99, potential buyers might want to know that the Gen1 model has been software updated to the Gen2 standard, making the screen much more useful. In addition the Gen1 show can run UA-cam again, and it has a browser!
The drop in feature is one of the things we use most! We have two residences, and it is nice to be able to check on things when we are away. But we are very careful about who can access it!

i can have 2 echo one at my room one at my living room , and drop in and talk to people downstair
or i have some close friend work on something and need contact frequently , it's like a skycall someone with alexa
as long as you can disable the drop in in the setting it's 1000% ok

Echo Show is going to flop in sales due to the ugly nature of the design. The design looks like its been designed for a sci-fi show from 3 decades ago and it will only be a few weeks until many are returned and in the Amazon Warehouse deals. I think the idea behind it is good but the implementation, design and vision behind this product is lacking. A lot.

Motion activates the screen turning on and lighting up to be useful. And I find the drop in extremely useful in my household since I have dots scattered around so that I can drop in at any time to listen to my youngest is only 6 and has autism. So you saying yeah right to a being a monitor is only because you probably don't have that type of situation to consider. Love the videos keep them coming

I feel like the screen doesn't offer much additional benefit yet, but (as with the original Echo) the utility of it will become more apparent as more app developers come up with clever ways to utilize it. Once that happens, Amazon will again look like they were very forethinking individuals totally ahead of the game. When really they just added a camera and a screen and waited for third parties to figure out what to use them for.

Other comments may already have said this, but you’re incorrect about the Echo Show’s UA-cam interface. If you say “Alexa, show me UA-cam videos about X,” it will show you a selection of videos. Say “Alexa, scroll right” if you want to see more than the first three videos. Say “Alexa, play number X” to watch the video you want.” You also can search for UA-cam videos by title if you happen to know it. Also, for cord cutters like me, the Echo Show provides an improvement in the Flash News Briefing with video news updates from CNN, Reuters, Newsy, and a not so great video from Fox News Radio. No UA-cam video reviews that I’ve watched thus far has mentioned this important latter feature. Moreover, too much negative about the thickness of the ES is being said when it is now thicker that the original Echo. What’s different is its width, which is necessary because its Dolby stereo speakers are placed next to each each other. The ES is essentially a stationary, primarily voice controlled tablet running the Alexa software with a chip that’s actually powerful enough to run Windows. Not only can it play UA-cam videos, but it can of course play Amazon videos. It’s easy to mock it when it’s just been launched, but think back to how little the Echo could do at initial launch!

What do you think about the Lenovo Smart Display with Google assistant in comparison with this? I mean the Lenovo Smart Display works perfectly fine for me, and the features they offer with the price they are selling it for, makes it totally worth it. Love how life changing the features are. The built in speakers for the lenovo smart display works just as good as my harman/kardon speakers.

I have 3 Shows. Some may complain about their weight but their weight makes it possible to use the touch screen without pushing the Show all over the table or desk. Using "Drop-In" I can view other areas of my house or communicate with family or friends when I authorize it. I can also bring up the views of 3 security cameras on the Shows to see what's happening on my porch or around the yard. The video screen adds great value to the calendar, shopping lists, timers, recipes or appointments. A Show can also "Drop-In" on a Echo Dot. I have a Dot in the garage and can drop-in on it with a Show or another Dot from the house. This makes it useful as an Intercom or to simply check out a noise you heard that may or may not be coming from your garage. Between my house and automobiles I have 10 Echo devices (Dots, Dashes, Shows, ROAV Viva, and the New Fire TV Cube). They control 24 devices including lights, Security alarms and cameras, door lock and video doorbell, home heating and cooling, weather station, cable box, TV, DVD and sound system. I use the Shows more than any other Echo product.

I bought the Amazon Echo Show to be able to drop in on my mother because she has serious health problems & she can't remember things well so you can't teach her much & she can't learn about all the technology we have now even something as simple as saying Alexa, answer would be a problem for my mother to learn & this little Alexa show has been great because I can drop in on her to make sure she's alright, so I don't know what you're talking about saying nobody would want that drop in feature when that is the main reason I bought one & thinking about buying another & further more you do have control over who can drop in or not, you just have to be smart enough to set it up correctly.

The only reason I can see of getting one is to gut it and make a All-in-one PC.
Since it's so thick a micro tax board AND a dedicated GPU could probably fit inside (with a PCI-E extender), and it could be a little low spec gaming box.

Oh it's just a screen panel, I would just get a driver board for it, that would let it connect to something like VGA or HDMI usually.
Speakers I'd probably remove for more room, or wiring them up really can't be hard. I don't know of any speakers that don't use the simple two wires.

I love new tech and my Amazon Echo and Tap but I can't thing of any reason for buying one with a screen, especially when it's not portable. I can already put my iPad anywhere I need it in the kitchen to watch a show or find a recipe. If this had come out prior to the regular Echo I may have bought it but now I can't see any reason to change to this. It would be cooler if it had a battery or rechargeable option so it could be moved around the room, stuck to the fridge or mounted somewhere useful. Also not being able to adjust the viewing angle sucks.

I disagree (to some extent) with your comments about the drop-in feature. No, I would not want anyone outside of our family using it when we get an echo spot to supplement our existing echo dot network but I can see it being very useful 1) as a baby monitor and 2) can see it being useful if you have an elderly or ill relative, cannot reach the person by phone and are concerned about their well being. I can see using drop in to attempt to visually see them before calling emergency personnel to check on them (if you don't live near enough to quickly do so yourself). In fact, while we use our echo dots for many things every day, the first and foremost reason for having them is to serve as a medical alert for me so that if for example, I am on the floor with a hip fracture and cannot reach the phone, (a very real possibility for me due to my osteogenesis imperfecta), I can use my voice to have Alexa call for help. To me, the drop in feature could add useful information (if I was near enough to the screen to be seen) and had hit my head (something that happens frequently when I fall) and was not able to coherently give an appraisal of my condition to my partner so that he could have more information available when calling emergency personnel.

I appreciate the time and effort you put into doing this video. When considering a purchase I like to watch reviews that focus on the Pros as well as the Cons. I also add in the mix a review that just provides features and how they work. In another review I watched the reviewer was clearly in the Pro column and he pointed out exactly how I would use this and why it was a good choice for my needs. I won't be turning on the drop in feature on the ones that have screens but the one that has a screen is a great solution for communicating with my mom. From her having photos on it, to video calls with the family, to playing music, or watching a movie while she is cooking, setting timers, getting the weather, and news it will be a welcomed kitchen appliance for the both of us. No need for her to have to get out her phone and struggle with it to see my daughter when we call. Plus all she has to do is say "Alex, call my son". Thanks for your honest review and impression. Much appreciated. Keep them coming, I did give you a thumbs up even though I didn't come to the same conclusion that you did.

drop in would be good if you're not home and you want to check in on pets or the babysitter I guess... but yeah that's awkward and I'd just keep the thing facing the wall if people just dropped in

I've used the drop-in feature on my Amazon Echo (standard) many, many times, and I love it!! My family is pretty bad about answering their phones when they're at home (I'm mutually guilty, tbh) and so the ability to drop in and talk to them has been tremendously helpful. If I get sick of waiting for a text response, if I call but get no answer, or even if I want to make sure no one is in my room when they aren't supposed to be, the drop in feature has been a fantastic tool.
So there's my 2 cents xD

Drop in is for elderly relatives.... they are on the shower floor... you have 8 mics... they can't get up... this person is young... doesn't know how old people get and need assistance. I'm a social worker. (o:
