Oof, I felt that. 😖 But I'm getting better at avoiding this.
So far what works best for me is ignoring color (sometimes sweet ones can be pale or green-ish, & bright orange ones can still be sour) or firmness (softer can just mean it has a thick puffy rind, or it's getting too old), & instead picking it up & bobbing it up & down in my hand. It should feel heavy, & have some inertia & momentum to it when you move it. This means it's got high water content, thus is more likely to be juicy & ripe. 🙂
This isn't foolproof; it can be hard to gauge without comparisons, & can be difficult to do reliably with a bagful. But that's the best I've come up with so far.
You gotta get it right in the store or while picking them from trees because, like apples, oranges won't get any riper once they're harvested. Waiting for it will only make it get closer to rotting (& sometimes oranges actually get MORE sour with age).
Anyone else have tips that work well for you?
